4 years ago I had 585 nes games, 376 atari games, the entire nintendo power collection along with untold amounts of other retro gaming items. I ended up selling it all to pay bills and Christmas for the children. It was definitely worth it to keep the family afloat!
Today, I've been back in the game for 2 years and have restocked about 3/4 of it all. It's nice to be back but I would sell it all for the family again in a heart beat! ;)

Paul Barnes emulation on a crt is exactly the same as playing on real hardware.

Gaj B only if you play on a crt. should be fine for most games but something like battletoads would be near impossible.

I think that’s a weird thing to give to your kids. Like imagine your parent had a huge doll collection. It meant everything in the world to them and you get the privilege of inheriting it. Only issue is that this doll collection takes up around 4 bedrooms. Your kids are gonna have their own stuff they like. Maybe pick out a game or two that really matters to them so that when you die you don’t make them have to sell it all off because it’s old crap they don’t want.

Here's what I do when it comes to selling games:
If I don't want to keep a game in a collection, I move it to a "maybe sell"-pile which is kept away from the collection. Then I keep it there for like 3 months, and then make a rescission if I still want to get rid of it. Why? To not make anything impulsive.
With this system, I've actually moved back games from the sell pile to my regular collection. I think it's inevitable to get swings in mindset as to which games you really want to have, or even if you should be collecting at all in this hobby. It's an interesting topic for sure.

I remember you selling off your collection when I was subbed to you back in the day.It was sad that you had to sell your collection. But you did it for a reason. Was so glad that you returned and now your collection is better than your previous.I had to sell some things years ago but have added most of it back into my collection.Sold a Sega Genesis and around 40 games,PS1 & PS2 and about 100 games between the two,Nintendo Wii and only 10 games.Life changing events happen so certain sacrifices have to be made.

I did a school friend's paper round every day for 3 (winter) months in exchange for their Amiga CD32.
I've always had a massive soft spot for it, but after a few years, leaving school etc, I decided selling it was the "grown up" thing to do at the time.
I always regretted doing that after settling down. Fortunately, with ebay to the rescue, a decade later, I'm back with a pristine boxed Amiga CD32 and the games I played to death.

I've been thinking of how much it would hurt if I was in a position had to sell things. I usually speak against the "shelf collector " because video games should be played! But at the same time, there might be an old mega drive / Genesis game you've had for YEARS and you may not play it, but it means something to you. I see both sides. Either way, your office now looks like a room of fun, which is what it's all about!

I surely did! (this could also go as a reply to your biggest retro gaming regret video!) I was out of work due to an illness & sold part of my collection to pay some bills. The highlights of pain include: mint complete copy of Skies of Arcadia, mint complete in box copy of Mega Man II, mint complete copies of Einhander & Xenogears, my entire Resident Evil & Silent Hill collection, entire SNES collection and more. The good news is they have made their way back into my collection (with the exception of Mega Man II & some of the SNES games) over the last four or five years.

I had to rebuild my collection three times before my current one. The first collection which was Atari, Vectrex, Game N Watches and other stuff from the early eighties was lost in a storage unit which my mom didn't pay for. I was a kid in middle school at the time in the mid eighties. The second collection which was all Nintendo, TurboGrafx, Sega, I sold to pay my way through college. Third was primarily Sony PSP, PS1 PS2 PS3 and a mixture of the two previous collections which I sold to move my family out to Colorado. My fourth collection still exists, although I pared down a TON of common carts for Nintendo and Sega. I still have a basement and a master bedroom full of games downstairs. Rebuilding is always fun because each journey is different from the rest. This fourth one so far is the best journey yet, as I was able to find a TON of stuff I grew up on.

My NES and SNES stopped working many years ago. I'd say 20 years ago or so. So I sold all my games because I wasn't aware if there were any stores like there are today that can fix consoles. Now I've been collecting all the games I grew up playing and it's a huge pain. Started doing that in 2013.

The games I had for NES were Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing, all 4 TMNT games, Bases loaded 3, All 3 Mario Bros. games. Double Dragon 2, Blue Marlin, Blades of Steel, Punch-Out (not the Tyson version), Code Name Viper. Dr. Mario and WWF/E WrestleMania Challenge and WWF/E WrestleMania Steel Cage Challenge. For SNES, I don't remember all. But I know I had Killer Instinct, Super Mario World, Batman Returns, 3 or 4 hockey games, a couple WWF/E games and Super Play Action Football. Traded them in to Funco Land here in the States. Before it was GameStop. Only got $15 credit.

I had a time where I did a similar thing, around 2007, I was flip flopping in relationships so all the ps, ps2 and my Amstrad cpc stuff went. I only kept my gx4000 carts and some snes ones. Thank goodness I need, keeping Secret of Mana was vital! Been rebuilding since 2012 and now it's larger than it's ever been. So, it was a learning curve but the upshot was discovering how much I liked having it, just like yourself Gem.

I sold my comic book collection in the 80s for enough money to buy me my first car (I was Uni in the US) That same collection today would be worth 100,000s. I had a Spider Man #1 and Avengers #1. I don't feel too bad tho because later I sold that car to pay for my last year of Uni and I was able to graduate. Life takes us in odd roads and I have learned not to regret.
Also, thank you Jess for pushing Gemma back into it because I love watching her channel and really enjoy her enthusiasm and down to earth approach. (Not to mention it's so nice to see other women in gaming!)

collecting can become a bit of an unquenchable addiction, with quick hits each time you buy something but it doesn't satisfy you for long. I used to enjoy games far more when I was younger when I didn't have disposable income and a much smaller amount of games. sometimes less really is more! I don't really collect anymore (anything), and if I must play an old game I don't or no longer own, i just emulate it. Feels quite liberating. I now just do copious amounts of crack to fill the void with the money I would have spent on old games.

Nice vid, Gemma and an interesting topic. I've never sold off a collection as such but will tell you a bit about my life growing up as a gamer.
So I was born into a single parent household, luckily my older brother was into games so we shared the hobby, but typically we had to sell a console each time a new generation came out. I must have flirted from Mega Drive to SNES several times during their lifespan, haha. Luckily that all changed when I started working and could feasibly get just about whatever I wanted. I did have a 'collection' in my mind, it was just what I wanted at the time.
By 2008 I had a de end array of consoles and games, I think I had a JP Dreamcast, US N64, JP & PAL PS1, PAL PS2' PAL Jaguar, and a Lynx, as well my Xbox 360 as my current gen choice. I relocated to London from Stoke and unfortunately much of this got misplaced and was lost. All that remained was the 360 and a couple of shoeboxes full of the import Dreamcast and PS1 games, (continued next comment)

Oh yeah I remember this as I was already for some time "here". I am so glad you have made a comeback.
To answer your question yes I had to sell twice my collection. One in 1993 (huge) and one in 1994 (not so huge). I hope I will never have to repeat that again. Though of course you never know.
    Good luck Gemma.

    • @TheGebs24

    • @Trusteft
      @Trusteft 8 лет назад

TheGebs24 At the time I wanted the better and better system, but I have no income to speak of. I was still a kid. So..since my asshole (not just for this) parents never helped though they could easily do, only way to get the money was to sell what I had, which I did.
94 was the last time I sold anything of mine, video game related.

I had a collection that I started in 2005 and then I sold everything in summer 2009 to raise money to buy a MK1 Escort and kit out my daughters nursery as she was due in 2010. It was the right decision at the time.
The collection ive built now is much better than what I had before much like yourself and like you I wouldn't sell up again. I love what I have now and I know I would struggle to find half of it in the condition that I've got ever again.

This story warms my heart! When love is right, when love is true, we do what we gotta do. ❤️
As far as collecting goes... I did have quite a few unboxed NES-games. Nothing out of the ordinary and nothing to hang on to for dear life, so I sold 'em for 400 euro. Pretty good deal, as most games were given to me for free...
I do have a decent CD collection. Again, nothing extraordinary but the amount of time I put in getting the albums prevents me from ever parting with them. I'll get buried with them!
Again, awesome story, Gemma! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gemma, congratulations on getting a collection back together. I'm sure a lot of other gamers have got rid of their entire collection before due to circumstance, I know I've got rid of a lot of consoles and games that i used to own due to just being skint or when I travelled the world 9 years ago I flogged most of my retro games through gritted teeth to pay for the journey. But with hard work and determination I've managed to get back the games I enjoyed both as a kid and an adult. Really enjoying the videos, keep up the great work!

Iv sold my collection off lots of times and had to start again when the hunger has kicked in! I have managed to wean myself of collecting by accepting that with a wife and 3 kids there's better things I can spend our cash on plus I now emulate anything I want to play on my modded Xbox, I have a 500GB drive in it stuffed with Nostalgia. Its much more satisfying as I find collecting and having a collection actually causes me anxiety and now I feel free from that burden. Sell it all and emulate and I promise you will never look back and you may even find you play the games more emulated than you did when you owned the original hardware and/or games!

I once sold all of my PS2 games when my console broke but then I got a new console to play them on at a later date but at that point, it was too late. I sold 300 out of an 800 game collection 4 years ago. Mostly it was games I would never play because of their genre. My collecting had got a bit out of control and I was running out of space. Did that about 4 years ago. However the money allowed me to import a refurbed asteroids cabinet from the US. :) There were a few gems in there (PAL Castlevania:SOTN with artbook and soundtrack, big box Super Metroid being just two) but I didn't regret it. My collection is more focussed to my tastes and curated now as I tend to upgrade copies for better conditioned ones and I have converted my PAL N64 collection to JP-NTSC. And I have a gorgeous big arcade machine downstairs!

I'm an aspiring filmmaker and I had a little over 500 retro games, along with around 15 systems, including handhelds, that I sold so that I could acquire some film equipment. Sad day, but it was definitely the right decision at the time because I did get most of the equipment I needed, and I have made a couple of short films with more on the way. I do miss my collection though and I am slowly but surely regaining it. :)

Wow, selling a whole collection would be really overwhelming, and probably emotional since there are games I have really fond childhood memories. Took me time to get back some of the childhood games I used to have. I have gathered and collected games since 2002. I have traded and sold games here and there but have kept them all since. I would be lying if I said that I haven't thought of selling my collection because there are times that I feel like giving up since it has become a very expensive hobby.

I've never had a huge collection of games and consoles, but look back now I wish I had never sold either of the following: Master System I boxed (not sure where that went) and Microsoft Xbox (Crystal) boxed. The latter because like you Gem I needed to get rid for something more necessary. Fortunately through the wonder of car boots and the Retron5, I have just about replaced them. I gave away all my older games like an idiot when I got away from material things. Since 2011, I gradually started building up my ps3 library, making sure I'll eventually beat and thoroughly enjoy all the games that I keep, seeking out trophies within reason. I'm now at about 130 games between the ps3 & ps4 but many are only digital these days. Luckily, I got myself a nice laser printer so I'll be printing off my own cover art for these as well as my steam library soon.

As a kid, I had to sell all my old games every time a new one came out. As I grew into an adult, I continued the practice of selling or trading any console/collection I hadn't touched in more than a month. I wouldn't call myself a collector now, as I still buy games with a focus of what I want to play, but I've stopped trading or selling anything that I have interest in. If the game is hot garbage, sure - away it goes. I just found myself missing old consoles and games too often and decided to break the cycle of buy, sell, and rebuy.

After being laid off in 2010, I was in dire straights. After going through all my savings, I was about to miss my mortgage payment. I didn't have a huge retro collection, not by some RUclipsrs standards anyway. But I had a total of 200+ games from NES, SNES, Genesis, N64 and PSOne. In a desperate move, I sold a large part of it on Ebay and Amazon. It gave me enough money to pay my bills for the month. While I lamented the loss of my collection, it wasn't something I missed too much. However, in the last few years I've been slowly buying back some of the games. It's actually been fun going to retro stores in my area and talking to other gamers about their experiences with older games. This last week I was at Game On Expo here in Arizona and was able to pic up my first couple Super Famicom games. I was also able to meet several RUclips personalities like Gamester81and Happy Console Gamer. I think if I hadn't sold so much of my collection six years ago, I would've missed out on so much of the Retro craze that seems to be going on now.

When I was in about grade 9, I sold my copy of Final Fantasy Tactics to a friend... Only to spend twice what he paid me for it about six months later to get another copy, it's one of my favourites of all time, and the day I bought it (again) I vowed I'd always have a copy, and so far, so good!

I've never sold any of my games. I still have hundreds of C64 games, all my Mega Drive and Xbox games. Some may have got lost or broken but I've never sold a single one of my games. On a 16bit Brothers VR about earliest gaming memory, I showed the actual cassette of my very first game back from 1982. Well the game was published in 82 but I still remember getting it in 84.

i sold all my retro games to get the next consoles that were coming out up until about 2013. selling my snes and dreamcast lots were especially painful seeing the prices and rarity of a lot of those games now though im slowly finding them again. im amazed i've managed to come into 500+ games and 12 consoles as of yet for not a shockingly high amount of money.

I think I've mentioned this before but I never really had a choice when part of my collection was gone. My whole Sega CD collection, God of War red PSP bundle, and some other stuff were stolen from me while I was in the process of moving. Thankfully my Snatcher, Final Fight, Panzer Dragoons and Shinobi games were in another box and were spared. It was awful. These weren't the games you could just get out and buy anymore and besides all that, I've kept all my games in mint condition by habit so it was impossible for me to find them in such good condition again. I've managed to get part of my Sega CD collection back together again finding bargains and some in really good condition. I think when you lose a collection, something happens to you and you not only want to get a prized item back, but you get more than one. Sort of like being ready this time and having a back-up just in case.

I had a large collection of retro computers, C64s (including my own from 1983), VIC 20s, Electrons, Speccys, Ataris and a Commodore PET (1978). However, due to space constraints and a growing family I decided to sell it all.
It went to a good friend and fellow collector so I know it was going to a good home. Do I regret it? You bet I do!

AFAIR I didn't sell anything retrocomputer-ish I got except 2 Amiga accelerators (1 Blizzard 040/50 and 1 Apollo 040/40) ca.15 years ago. My first C64 after it got broken to the FBR state - got desoldered and its PCB was hanging displayed on my wall. Components were stored. Nowadays I see it was a smart move to keep and store these items "because one day I might wanna use it or help my friend with it and I might need it ad hoc". I like the comfort of just picking up a joystick I like etc. :)

Steel Battalion on xbox, Projector and loads more things I cant remember. I lost my job in the games industry when it was so expensive to make games in the UK compared to the USA. Never had to sell anything from my collection, but I'm seriously considering getting rid of most of my retro games at this point. It's not that I don't enjoy playing older games, but they're just taking up space. I have other interests than gaming that compete for a limited amount of apartment space, and the majority of the games I have I don't play. So I'll probably just keep things that were gifts and has other sentimental value, and get rid of the rest. My collection is not even all that hard to replace, I only have a handful of expensive games (and only one that crosses the 150€ mark, and that's Mr. Gimmick), so if I were to regret selling those games a few years down the line, it should not be too hard to actually replace them

Many many years ago we owned a SNES with many games. At some point, we 'grew out' of it (yeah, like that ever happens...) and handed it over to my younger cousins. Some years later, when I asked about it, it turned out they sold it all! That was so disappointing. Luckily, for my recent 27th birthday, my GF decided to gather some money within the family and they gave me a SNES in good condition with several of the classic games! So yeah, I'm starting my own SNES collection with all the games I remember from back in the days. =)

I sold my childhood gaming collection - megadrive, game boy original and colour, saturn, ps2, (my ps1 got borrowed and subsequently disappeared off the face of the earth), and N64 - all with loads of games, about a year or so ago. I do wish I had them still but I found playing them on flat screen hd tvs just made them look awful and I didn't have the space at the time for crt tvs. I'm now holding onto my ps3 and xbox one but really miss the nintendo and sega gaming I grew up with, so I may potentially build a small retro collection dedicated to those (dreamcast, gamecube etc) :)

I am 30 now, so I have a massed a fair old collection. The great shame is that most of it is in boxes at my parents house as I simply do not have the room for it. I've had and sold a few consoles over the years but I regretted selling my Atari Jaguar most. I recently got one again and absolutely love it. There were a lot of bad games made for it but the good games like Doom, Tempest 2000 and Iron Soldier are awesome. I lost £2000 on a bet a couple of years ago and had to sell off a good part of my CIB SNES collection to regain some cash, there was a mint condition chrono trigger, breath of fire 3 and many many other gems, it was very upsetting but had too be done. Since then I've vowed never to sell any of my games. My collection is now bigger and better than ever, the rarest games I now own now are CIB Demons Crest and a very rare UK copy of Super Metroid in a small box with typo printing error on the back.

I've never sold anything out of necessity (thankfully), but I sold some things back in college for beer/pizza money (like my CIB, mint copy of Ogre Battle 64). Also, a few years ago I got on a "get rid of stuff" kick and sold my original PS2 + games, and all my Final Fantasy and other RPGs because I figured i would just stick with the digital versions and use my BC PS3 for anything not on the PS store... boy did I regret that. Have since replaced them. Also, I have sold off handhelds back in the day because I never really kept up with playing them. Have since replaced the handhelds and now play on them more than consoles, since they are just easier now that I have a kid and little time.
I'm getting away from collecting things in general. So as I beat games, if I see no replay value they get sold. While I don't plan on selling my Nintendo or Sony consoles/jhandhelds, as I finish off games for a system I will consider selling it. Already sold of my Sega consoles since my Retron and Retrogen can handle the few Genesis games I have kept. I only kept 1 dreamcast game, Shenmue, so I can just emulate that rather than keeping around a Dreamcast that won't get used. I can possibly see getting rid of my Xbox consoles in the future when I finish beating a few games and replaying a couple one more time.
