    If you need help doing head gaskets and studs in a couple months, let me know. It will blow in the back on the passenger side were the exhaust runs due to the heat. The Dmax won't last long beating on it with a tuner without some upgrades...

    Awesome. I love suggestion of having engine running to keep metal from falling in. An old trick i have often used is pack your drill bit or tap with thick grease and the grease will catch most of the metal flakes.

    I love the show. Use jackstands. I do lots of dumb stuff, but this is not one of them.

    @MikeFinnegan, When I was doing mobile service on large industrial blowers and didn't want to take them out of service, I would put heavy grease on the drill bit and tap and it would all get stuck in the grease, Wipe out the grease and you're done. Works great especially for cast iron. And maybe some Nickel Anti- Seize if you ever plan on getting that thing out again

    The reason you tap it there besides being easy is because that's one of the truest spots to get the temperature. Alot of people make the mistake of putting it on at the exhaust you lose temperature as it goes through the turbo and it doesn't matter the temperature reading after the turbo it matters before the turbo.

    Mike there are kits you can get for your Duramax that will let you use the much larger CAT fuel filter/water separator or a two stage filter and water separator. I did a kit from the now defunct XX-Fuel that used much larger filters than the crappy stock filter on my 06 Dodge. It was way easier to change those filters once or twice a year at most instead of 5 or 6 times a year from the factory. Plus the dual filters did a much better job than the factory setup.

    The Banks Six Gun I have lets me change power levels on the fly. Towing hard and EGT's getting up there?- Dial the power down. Someone wants to drag race during your morning commute, crank it up. Can't believe they don't all do this, it's pretty damned useful. I'm always changing levels while driving.

    Just a side note you dont need to take the inner fender out to change the fuel filter. Just jack it up, pull the tire if you feel like it and pull the inner finder out as far as you can get it then unplug the water seperator and use a large band wrench to loosen the filter. Then just repeat the process in reverse and prime the system with the fancy plunger on top under the intake tube. I do like 10 to 15 of those a day

  • @tittledieselperformance
    @tittledieselperformance 7 лет назад

    Hey mike when you go and program it go into the custom tune and look for shift firmness or line pressure and Max the setting for the transmission. Even the tow tune will wreck the Allison C2 and C3 clutch packs and there expensive to rebuild even if you DIY it. Whatever setting you run your gonna want to tune the trans. Also look into a Transgo JR shift kit for the valve body it will help keep your ATF temps down when towing by swapping out the pressure regulator valve that controls fluid flow threw the converter and so on. Like the truck I'd like to keep seeing more modifying as you go.

    You should use some moly dee on that tap too. Most tapping outside of a machine shop can be considered a high pressure situation since your usually hand tapping. Some moly dee adds a little insurance that your tap will stay in one piece.

    Adding some grease to the tap will also help to keep shavings from falling inside the manifold. However, the exhaust manifold may get hot enough to simply make a big mess with melted grease everywhere. Hi-temp grease should do the trick.

But we would like to keep enjoying his content for the foreseeable future :) At least put the wheel under the lower control arm so it lands on that instead of your leg.

      @SheepInACart 7 лет назад +8

      I always chuck the wheel I take off under the frame (or on bigger\lifted trucks, axle) regardless of if I have jack stands or not. Its a great trick for not ending up flatter than Wiley Coyote in a road runner flick, and it works even when your changing to a spare next to the highway and not going to have jack stands ect with you.

  • @TheDaltonmichaels
    @TheDaltonmichaels 7 лет назад

    the fuel water seperator and filter are easily changed out from the top side. also i would advise a rebuild kit for the housing that the filter ataches to. if you have any kind of leak it will cause major problems including damage the injection pump that is on the engine. no telling on a used truck if the seals have ever been redone.

  • @Blackneck1994
    @Blackneck1994 7 лет назад +1

    Hey Mike, it's your truck do with it as you please, but I HIGHLY suggest not using that Edge tuner for adding power. Handheld programmers are only designed to add power (obviously) with no regards to the transmission in terms of safe tuning. Custom EFI Live tuning is a much safer and better option if you care about keeping your transmission alive long term. Plus, since you have a variable geometry turbo, tuning is available to have it act as an exhaust brake with tow/haul mode engaged in the tow tune. I've towed with and without an exhaust brake and it is a MUCH better towing experience when you have an exhaust brake on top of the grade braking feature. Just some food for thought buddy!

    For drill and tap matching charts, there is an awesome phone app called "iEngineer". Not sure if they have it on android or not. This app lets you select your fastener type, and then tells you the drill sizes for 50% and 75% meat tap holes, and also loose and tight fit through holes. It also has fraction to decimal conversion charts and a whole bunch of other features/info along these lines. Way more handy than google, especially if you are stuck out in the desert without internet access.
    Also yes, get a physical chart and tape that sucker up in your shop!

  • @BudgetGroundPounder

    If you put grease all over your drill bit and your tap the grease will hold the metal shavings from falling in if it doesnt grab all of them, use a small magnet to grab metal shavings as well.

    The egt probe goes in the manifold because that is the temperature you are actually worried about, it will be hottest there. Anything downstream from that had cooled off and gives a false reading of what the really expensive parts are seeing.

    Just a comment but when I added a backup camera to my truck I rigged mine to run off a switch rather than the reverse lights. Also, get a FASS or Airdog lift pump and you'll have better filtration, filters will be under the driver side of the cab so easy to get to, plus you can have them flow more fuel if you need it.

      It would be cool. But I hate that engine with a passion.

    That year of Duramax you dont need to take the Inner fender out for the fuel filter you can change it from the top. Filter Wrench, Channel locks and a 13mm for the little plastic bolt for priming and youre done 10 minute job. 20 the first time lol

    Mike for that kit to be really complete they should have included a roll of duct tape . i mean zip ties are cool . but they are no match for a good roll of duct tape. my choice is the 3M brand.

    You thought about doing the coilover conversion on the front? I'm going to be doing it on my truck as the drivers torsion bar is worn to where max adjustment on the key is barely standard ride height.....

    My truck has efi live and can switch power levels on the fly with the CTS2. Might be just for efi, but the CTS2 does have the capability. In case that missing function was a turn off for anyone.
    My truck is an '05 Duramax btw. Might be different capabilities based on the year as well.
