Cohn's reasons are his own. But beside showing loyalty to Trump, this gives him another thing to hold over Trump should he feel the need.

He would of course need to declare it as it is an election expense, but he can’t do that now can he as it would expose the very thing he was trying to hide? So between them all they came up with a plan to pretend it was a legal expense and had it paid in 12 installments starting the month after the inauguration, to further hide it for what it was. All of that was revealed, including Weisselberg hand written notes how the $420k was determined and then turned into 12 payments. It’s stuff a 10 year old could follow?
