    Thank you so much for doing this video. It's very informative and you did a great job. I found it while literally trying to decide between these two. I would never be incubating but a very few eggs. I lost my first hen to a predator a few weeks ago. I love my babies, and decided I wanted their kids if anything happened to them. They love to free range but that carries a heartbreaking risk.

      I am so sorry to hear about your hen. Were you able to hatch her eggs? It is a fine balance between giving them their best chicken life and keeping them cooped up. We have a secure run for our birds, and we also have an area fenced with portable electrified poultry netting. We allow the birds to roam inside the netting once we let them out in the morning and when we tuck them into the coop at night. It isn't foolproof, but has greatly minimized our losses, and the birds get a nice big area to explore.

      You are so right! It gets back to the old adage about "starting out like you can finish up." I have a large run and have since re-roofed a large barn structure which I have subdivided. One section is a 10x 10 walk-in chicken coop with a large run and a front part of the barn that is a very pleasant place to hang out. The large run behind is not covered though part of it will be covered in weeks. I can't afford perfect protection here. They have several large and wonderful places for shade but used to prefer the shade of the bamboo and woods. it is a great foraging ground for them. I put 3 strands of electric wire through 700 feet long in the woods since losing Brenda. I think it helps. My intention was never to let them free range from the time they were released from the locked coop and run until almost bedtime. I have let them run the show too much and am trying to get things under control.
      Electric netting is under serious consideration as an extra outer perimeter that may discourage some predators. People tell me it's a pain, especially in snow and ice.
      I did not have an incubator when I lost my golden laced Wyandotte, Brenda. That loss compelled my decision. Then my favorite Easter Egger became my first broody. I bought eggs I wanted to put under her and also incubated some eggs. She adopted the incubated chicks. Autumn was an incredible mother. They were 3 months old Sept. 16.

    Ordered the Kebonnixs because we don't need anything larger. The easy cleaning is a big feature. My OCD husband will give it a dry run with a thermometer and hygrometer to make sure the numbers are true. He will install the shelf liner also, not because of the noise, just because it gives the chicks a better foot hold. He also says....Wait for it.....,"wouldn't you rather lay on a mattress than a hard plastic bed?"

    Friend, I need your advice. I plan to buy a new incubator, but not which one to take of the two that you say, the one I have is the worst with eight eggs, only two and one died, only one survived; then I put eight more and in the process the embryos died, two were born but they died and another one died trying to get out; later I put six more and only three chicks were born, the others were lost in the process; And now I bought four more, six arrived, but nothing ever happened with two of the rest and two were still in the process and only two look good and they should be born on the seventh. The truth is I'm sad for my babies, I lost one in my hands. I took his last breath when I grabbed him to see what was wrong with him and I'm thinking of discarding that incubator but I don't know which of these two is the most appropriate for me. I want the best one so I don't have so many losses of my babies, which one do you recommend?

    • @WorldOnAString
      @WorldOnAString  Год назад

      I would recommend the one that is sized most appropriately for the number of birds you wish to hatch. The Kebonnixs holds 12, the NR 360 holds 22.

    Just got a Kebonnixs and it doesn't have that grey grate at the bottom. I've only used Brinsea and so far pretty happy with it.

      The Kebonnixs doesn't have a grate; it's a flat bottom. The Nurture Right 360 has the grate. Please do come back and let us know how you think the Kebonnixs performs.

      @@WorldOnAString well, all 9 of my eggs started developing and on day 10, stopped and died :( I don't think the turner was working properly and obviously something was wrong as the 7 eggs in my Brinsea from the same clutch are all thriving and due on the 23rd. I boxed that Kebonnix up and returned it this week. I'll stick with my Brinsea which has been reliable for 8+ years.

    I have the kebonnix what are your settings on with the first 18 days and 3 day lockdown I added a digital hygrometer inside just to see and it was showing that it was off by -3 degrees with temperature and -9-10 % with humidity.

    • @WorldOnAString
      @WorldOnAString  2 года назад

      Hi Rodney, I set it at 21 days, 99.5 F for chickens and 28 days, 99.5 F for turkeys. The incubator doesn't control for humidity, but it does display what the humidity is inside. I'll open or close the vent depending on whether I want it to be higher or lower. I target 50% humidity before lockdown. I don't think it matters so much what the humidity is at a given point within the first 18 days (25 for turkeys). It's more important what the average humidity is over the course of incubation. This is because you want enough moisture to evaporate that the chicks don't drown when they pip, but you also don't want to lose too much and deprive them of moisture. I also had put a small hygrometer in there, and I did see a difference. I don't believe the small ones were terribly accurate, as they didn't match each other, either. That being said, I really have no way of knowing if the one in the incubator is accurate, either. I hope this helps!

    Which incubator hatches out the best? What is your hatch rate in both of the two?

    • @WorldOnAString
      @WorldOnAString  3 года назад +2

      I have found that they are both so similar that I make my decision about which to use based on how many eggs I want to hatch. My hatch rates for both range from about 75-95% rather consistently, and I have had an occasional 100% hatch rate in each, although those are pretty rare.

    I saw one video where the person said he had not had good d results with the Nurture Right. I saw another one who said he did not like the dome covered models because he felt it caused problems with chicks trying to escape when you were removing shells.

    • @WorldOnAString
      @WorldOnAString  2 года назад

      I don't know about the experiences that others have had, but mine has been positive. You make an excellent point about chicks getting out from the dome-covered models, especially if the incubator is on a table. What I do when I want to open it is to set the incubator in a cardboard box and then open it, remove eggshells or any chicks that need to come out, then make sure the chicks that are staying are all set, cover it back up and return the incubator to it's normal spot. I hope this is helpful, and thanks for commenting.

      I bought some #7 plastic mesh canvas (like for needlepoint) and made a divider so I can separate eggs at lockdown. I also made a perimeter ring a couple inches tall to keep chicks from pouring out when I open it.
      I used twist ties to attach it all so that I can reconfigure the divider, depending on how many kinds of chicks I’m trying to keep separated.
      Amazon sells the divider for almost $40. I made the adjustable divider and the outer ring for under $4, and have leftover mesh.
