3:44 I didn't notice right away but that is where the St. Denis Marc station is today. It's not right where he's standing, it's closer to that bridge, but it's crazy to see a place I've been to so often growing up in a film from way back then. I was just there yesterday heh.
Thank you for showing the East End Philly Sub. This film is the same time I hired on B&O. Made it 40 years and now in year 4 of retirement. Remember all those trains we worked. 682. Gateway 97. SLTT. CPTT. 396. 85. NE84.
I'm an old B&O fan..... I love the B&O. In fact, the B&O was the reason I got into radio, and became a ham operator. I grew up along the East End Sub (now the Philly sub) in Darby, Pa. There was a siding there, and NE 87, 685, The Advanced Chicagoan, 689, The Chicago Trailer Jet, and more, all would sometimes stop at Darby, waiting for another train. Got to know a lot of train crews as kid. Brought back a lot of good memories watching this film. I remember the CSS....I had film of it myself up in the Darby area. Also had pics of the 614 when it stopped in Darby. B&O and Chessie were one hell of a railroad.....CSX just isn't the same. Since they took down my CPLs, those Safetrans signals don't give me the same feeling.
NE 84/87 came off the Delaware and Hudson in Philadelphia. They ran through Reading, Allentown and Taylor on the way to Binghamton NY. They used trackage from Reading, Jersey Central, Lehigh Valley and Erie Lackawanna railroads.
4:45 might be one of the earliest recordings of a K5LA I've heard... they'd only been in use for a few years at the time. Also not sure I've seen footage of the Chessie Steam Special, especially with sound. Your channel is absolute gold, we all appreciate your effort preserving all these recordings.
My wife and I were on that 1978 CSS excursion pictured in the video, running from Baltimore to Philadelphia. First time I ever got to ride through the Howard St. tunnel. We also took two other CSS excursions between 1977 and 1978. One was a circle trip out of Baltimore that ran via the Old Main Line going west, creeping around the tight east leg of the wye at Point of Rocks, and return to Balto. via the Metropolitan Sub. The other trip went to Harpers Ferry but I don't remember whether it ran west via OML and east via Met. Sub. or Met Sub. both directions. Have to dig out my old ticket stubs and see if the route is mentioned.
That first trip was neat. We road it the first day, chased it the second. When we got to Baltimore, they were still painting the smokebox. www.flickr.com/photos/jackdk/28356079670
@@1jackdk Thank you for the photo link. Brings back memories of the way Camden Station tracks used to look. Around 1983 we also rode another nice steam trip from Balto. to Martinsburg, WV with C&O 614. My wife even had family come up from southern VA to ride with us. Really miss those rail excursions out of Baltimore on the B&O and WM back in the 1960s, '70s and '80s.
I grew up along the ex B&O Chicago to Baltimore mainline. It was Chessie Systems when I was a kid in the 80s. But same difference. This video is mesmerizing.
@@VibrancySirJukewe liked the 3700 series GP40s. They would bury the amp meter and keep it there. The 4100 series GP40-2s were an unwelcome unit in the yard, taking forever to transition from forward to reverse.
Glad you were able to get your movies digitized, along with the sound. You had to have used a pretty good transfer medium as well as post-transfer editing in a computer program. Being that the film stock was Ektachrome, you either had little to no color fade/shift over the years, due to good storage practices. Thanks for sharing.
You know, while I like the Chessie paint scheme...I just realized I really like the Blue and Yellow scheme as much, if not more. It was the one I grew up with in Darby, Pa.
Another great video. Was 2101 the unit that was destroyed in a roundhouse fire around 40 or so years ago? My memory is foggy on this but I remember reading about it in RMC around 1979-1980 timeframe.
What happened to the Chessie System streamer after Conrail took over the east coast rail system? Man B&O Chessie system W&M road pwr was alot of Geep 40's leaders back in the day. Great to see old vintage films of what the rail system was like nearly 4 decades ago.
I find it fascinating that the B&o and the PRR run nearly parallel to each other between DC and NYC. And they cross each other in the vicinity of the Guinness brewery. Of course, the PRR ran under a tunnel to get to Manhattan and the B&O terminated ad Jersey City Communipaw station.
Wow....had a flashback to my sophomore year of high school watching this. Thanks.

4:45 What a gorgeous big tag K5LA! Those are extremely rare to find nowadays, so it's awesome to hear one from back in the day.
I think it’s actually an original corker K5LA. If this was recorded in 78 then this is likely one of the first K5LA’s built!
@@ArturoRailProductions Here's a video of an F40 (12/29/1978) with a big tag or corker K5LA. ruclips.net/video/OMxHlsD6G1E/видео.html
Ah I remember my dad telling the stories of these trains... i always wished to see them and yet, here we are.

Geeps, SDs, f units, long hood forward running, Steam = another great video!
1:04 what a consist! This era is my favorite because of things like this.
So neat seeing the B&O trains in the area I grew up in during the 1960's. Love those GP-30's!
Man, you have so much great stuff already, then this appears. You've been holding out! Great watching as always, Mr. K!

Thank you for the upload. I enjoyed watching. Excellent video.
I was hoping for some Bayview Yard vids. Worked there, 1970-74. The mash-up of F-units and GP's and SD's brings back memories of youth.
4:45 amazing k5la

Thanks for sharing Jack! I live in this area so recognized most of the locations and railfanned those same years.

Thank you so much...
Awesome video Jack!!!!
Great stuff!
Love the CSS, glad to see it in action.
Love those GPs
0:33 I had no idea the later SD units were any taller than the early high-hood GPs!
Terrific footage!
4:09- 4:18...miss hearing engines ROAR like this
Recorded in 1978, uploaded in 2020.
1:11 - I have a picture of me in the cab of that Western Maryland F unit #7152. It was in the Newark Ohio B&O yard around the mid 70's...
5:36 - I certainly didn't expect a B&O GP40-2 in B&O Dark Blue Livery instead of the Chessie System livery.
Oh whoops, I just found out that No.4033 is a GP40, not a GP40-2.

Grew up along the Philly sub in SEPA
Love that Chessie color scheme! CSX should bring that back, BNSF's colors are way ahead of them! Awesome video!

Also, Chessie 2101 is a Reading Railroad T-1 which is being restored by the Reading and Northern Railroad in Port Clinton Pa.

Great footage hard to believe GE has overtaken EMD

Date: 9/3/21- I was wondering if RJ Corman has the steam engine 2101 at Nicholasville, anyone have any idea?
its sad how all of these once great famous names are now gone
Strange to see units being run as long hood forward that aren't Norfolk & Western or Norfolk Southern
Engineer at Lakeside said "thanks a lot".
Just a minor tweak...in 1978 what is now the Capital Subdivision was still under its original name, the Washington Subdivision.
Thank you for that Jeff.
When EMD seemed to rule the locomotive industry and 4 axle power wasn’t hard to find on mainline frieght
The Capital Subdivision would be subjugated by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, and later CSX in 1987.
Hard to believe in just a few more years time they merged with family lines to become CSX
They merged with SCL. Family lines was never a real railroad.
It’s weird seeing all the cars WITHOUT graffiti on them
Crap, just search for my name. Senior moments abound!!
Wow so much more interesting than the dull generic cookie cutter paint and locomotives of 2022, and cluttered graffiti boring rolling stock.
great video, Jack!!
