It's always good to see some reasonable quality from entry level instruments. I am curious with Donner sponsoring it if they handpicked the instrument to send to you.
Was thinking the same thing. That and this dude is always overly excited about everything. He could review ketchup and he’d be like “this ketchup is amazing! I honestly expected it to be runnier for the low price I got it for, but it wasn’t. I’d really like to thank Heinz for sponsoring this video, but that has no effect on my own personal opinions :)” He does do a good job, though. I bought the Darkglass ADAM pedal because of his reviews and love it.
@@PS_Bass Eh, I have no issues with his presentation style. He's an up-beat dude. I'm good with that. I just know some companies looking for reviews will cherry pick what they send out. Some youtubers order it directly themselves for just that reason (Phillip McKnight comes to mind). Doesn't change the value of this review. Just a curiosity for me.
I've had lots of students get Donner guitars and I'm often really surprised by the quality. Especially after a quick setup. I have yet to see a Donner bass in person though so I wonder how they compare to their guitars.
As a mod project, the big question is whether they adhere to Fender spec or not. What I've found is that pickguards in particular are a complete crapshoot on these cheaper basses. They might look close, but chances are that you won't be able to swap it out without drilling. Same goes for the bridge.
Confirmed on my Donner I purchased a year ago. I had to drill in a few pilot holes to match Fender spec, and the screw closest to the output jack is floating in the cavity. I had to glue the screw in place for it to look correct.
Guys there are guitar spares company’s in the uk where you send them your pickguard and they copy it perfectly for not a lot of money. No drilling or anything just a perfect fit
I bought this bass about two years ago to learn bass on! I really love this bass, it is amazing quality for the price, it feels very nice in terms of the frets and fretboard, back of the neck finish (satin). The pickups and hardware are really good, the saddle is thick metal, runners very solid, pickups are excellent. The gig bag is nice, and comes with the truss rod tool in it, which is nice. However it's not perfect, I needed to adjust the truss rod quite a lot, the action was very high. The body is fairly light, and the bass can suffer neck dive, but this is also good as a bass gets very heavy after 30- 40 mins! Other than that, the strings are okay... for about a week. Mine started unraveling after about a week, so the strings really are crap- but what would you expect? The tone of the bass is very similar to Squire/Fender, it's really excellent IMO, no need for any upgrades.

Yeah, I bought a Donner fuzz pedal a couple of years ago, and it's not horrible. Not good for bass in a group setting due to a lack of blend, but it's fun for bedroom playing
A couple more in this cheap bass category are the Monoprice / Indio Pubb and Jamm basses. I bought one of the Jamm basses and it is quite nice. Not many reviews on these.
You really should check out the Yamaha BB series. By FAR the best value for money in the game imo. The BB234 is only around $200 and plays like a Mexican fender. The BB734A is $700 and plays better than almost anything I’ve ever played. Not to mention the iconic BB tone that fits in to literally any genre while still having a decidedly forward sound.
Waiting on this inexpensive bass( to practice on) I had an Ibanez I gave to my friend for his daughter to practice on. It should serve me well! Thanks Patrick!
I bought a Donner Uke Bass that I positively loooove. Sounds better than the Kala's I played around with at the Geetar Barn when I was shopping for a uke bass to do acoustic duo shows.
I'm a noob to bass so I saw this on Amazon for an affordable price and I'm new or beginner to bass electric guitar i wanna pick it up I'm 32 btw... not that that matters buts it's never to late to learn or pick up an instrument and ROCK!
Try the glarry fretless, very nice, only 110 dollars and my only 2 complaints are that I had to sand down the fretboard because it was a little rough and the pickups are very quiet. Very good for the price
I just sold a glarry because I did not like the fact that the strings could not be lowered enough at the bridge. They were too high for advanced picking at the 12th to 18th frets. Great for a beginner bass playing up to the 5th fret. Pickups were pretty good.
Headstock is pretty much a perfect match of Harley Benton. Probably the same manufacturer but sent over here for distribution in the Americas. No surprise bang for buck is tight!
Reinforced opinion about how good the Donner p bass is. Thank you! I'd like to see the jcraft basses reviewed. Specifically the jcraft active jazz bass. $170, a little more for the shielded and five string versions. Well under $300. Love your channel.
Donner's prices have gone through the roof ! I was looking at one of their bass guitars and they want almost $300 for it, way too much for a hit and miss instrument, at that price point I'm sticking with squier, at least I can try it out before I buy it at guitar center. (Edited because of typo ).
I picked up one for modding a year back. Looks like they have upped the quality. I had to dress the frets, sand the neck a bit and my tuners are atrocious. Like, fingernails on chalkboard bad. But it is a fun bass to dig into and certainly has a spot in the stable now.
I was in need of a new guitar tuner after I had nothing but trouble with Snarks for tuning up my basses. I took a chance on the Donner DT Deluxe pedal tuner, good price and Amazon had a coupon deal on it. Very accurate tuner, LED is big enough for me to read. Only problem is I need to use a wall wart to power it, it's too small to take a 9V battery inside.
I had a Donner tuner and it's good but doesn't deal with anything lower than standard tuning. If you're never going much lower than standard tuning it's great. I still use the Donner power supply on my pedal board and that works great
I would like to see you do a review on Rogue. They are the house brand for Guitar Center/Musicians Friend and they are great starter basses that are built to take a beating
It's amazing the quality of cheap instruments that are around these days! 30-40 years ago, a $200 bass, would have been garbage, & that would be like a $5-600 bass now!
Bought one of these a while back and took it to a guy who makes custom guitars to set it up for me. He said it was suprisingly good. He loved the pickups and only had to set the intonation on the d string. My twin brother has a 1980 fender p bass bought new then and loves it. I am 72 by the way and had to retire on drums because leg trouble so decided to thump on bass for a while. I am verry satisfied because if i kick the bucket my wife can hang it on the wall beside my picture.
I actually own a Donner power supply for my pedalboard. The reason is that it has an on/off switch so I don't have to be plugging/unplugging all the time. I chose it over a Voodoo one just because of that.
I just bought a Nashville Guitar World jazz bass for under 300 unbelievably sweet sounding great set up right out of the box and even comes with a gig bag .... not kidding super nice bass for insanely great price... excellent sound
I have an Oscar Schmidt p style that looks exactly like that. love that bass to death, those budget basses are way better than some people give them credit for.
It needs to be pointed out that since so much of a bass or guitar's sound is due to the amp and pedals, looking just at the instrument and ignoring the rest of the rig is a false demonstration.

Yeah with the weird 4-screw design they’ve got going on you’d definitely need to do some drilling for pretty much any aftermarket bridge
You can also kind of see that the left side pickguard screw near the neck pocket goes up pretty high
Didn't Patrick run into this when he upgraded the Wish bass?
