Love the genre snobs in the comments. Dance or don't dance, that is all. If you're worried about "this isn't techno, this is nu-minimal-tech-house-with 80s Detroit and new-wave-90's-Berlin influences and shouldn't be mixed like this" then youre 100% missing the point. Nice mix, I had a wee boogie in my kitchen.
This has given me more ideas for messing around with my RMX-1000 than any of the actual RMX-1000 videos out there. Thanks! Also, glad to see I'm not the only one who uses the fuck out of the Spiral Up feature!
I have yet to come across a video about mixing real techno without effects. I guess it's more the underground style I'm looking for. None of the mixes I listen to use effects really it's more about the tracks and where you mix them. That's a different approach imo.
Most djs will use something nowadays, even the underground techno djs use a low or hi pass filter, can hear it in their sets. If your looking to learn how to mix that style without effects, just use the eq.
Real techno DJs won’t use heavy effects and will let tracks play out. It’s really about picking tracks perfectly and creating a vibe / atmosphere so people can get lost. If a repetitive beat changes every 2 minutes than it is hard to get in that hypnotic state. That’s what I can tell you from first hand experience being the DJ and the audience 🫡
As someone who went to movement Detroit, I can tell you, that's not true... Richie Hawtin was banging out a set and used plenty of FX Most DJs play it as safe as they can when on a big stage setting. And less creative DJs don't know how to use them well. Although this mix is very subpar.
@@JeremyDahl Richie Hawtin has a different style and a different way of performing than 90% of the competition. He puts 2-3 tracks together to create new ones by taking the bassline from one, the melodies from another and percussion perhaps from a third one. With that technique you‘ll need FXs to create tension. It’s certainly different to somebody playing vinyl or on CDJs in my opinion. With the „typical“ style of DJ, you won’t need many effects to maintain what the original producer of each track intended to be heard. Best way to create a hypnotic atmosphere :)
I feel the same way. I'm desperately looking for tutorials and inspiration for blending techniques using xfader, upfaders, eq, and maybe filter at most. I find these fx and looping transitions so boring - they rob the musician of their song structure.
I back you up 100% bro. Im a new beginner Dj and i not touch the effects at all. They are out to date imo and sounds old and boring. Hot cues to jump/skip boring parts of the song is the onlything i use.

The genre then evolved in Berlin with led to the techno played by people like Ben Klock, Ben Sims, Luke Slater etc. Obviously there are subgenres, heavier and faster stuff.
