Good job, I did a similar thing with a 1993 Raleigh Dyna Tech Ogre XT only fitted inch and a quarter Hutchinson Top Slick tyres. These 90's mountain bikes handle really well and make great tourers.
I like this concept. Putting a used inner tube on the chain-stay is something I'd not thought of. Neat tip there. I like how you set up the brakes too. I don't like the angle of the handlebar though. Better to have it level and not ride on the drops, use a shorter stem if that helps.
I know, off video I tried different positions (including a shorter stem) just wasn’t working for me. Selling it anyway, so whom ever takes it will adjust it anyway to their preference.
Rsx brifters and altus fd? I think they are not compatible? My experience tells me that triple brifter will shift just on first 2 chainrings. Third one won't... Gear ratio is problem. You need road FD if you want to use triple brifter. And since there is no road FD with top pull, you must also change cable housing line. Or somehow you managed to hack whole system? 😊
I got it to work, but it was a pain to get right. Funnily a spacer behind the cassette seemed to improve shifting, when I removed spacer behind cassette, the shift to larger chainring was problematic. Now, as for cable pull ratio, they don’t seem to be exactly the same. I can not find any conclusive information for front derailleurs (MTB OR road). However going by the same logic as rear derailleurs - it is not the derailleur per say that is the issue, rather the gap between chainrings (since we are saying hypothetically cable ratio is not same MTB v Road). Delving into Shimano Technical manuals, you can see that between MTB and road cranks, the spacing is fractionally different. I’ve been looking for much older STI manuals, since I can only find recent one’s online, that go back to Deore M610, 8 speed for example. I think also, using a road front derailleur combined with a MTB crank will also be problematic. Namely due to the difference in chain ring size. Let me know what you think, I’ll have other projects like this and, it will be an issue. I need re read the charts in the STI manuals, unfortunately they list spacing from the middle of the frame to each ring and not between.
@@atboy4342 thanks for quick answer. Friend of mine also thinks that road crank will do the job. I can try with some SR triple cranks, and see what is happening. Will let you know about resoults. I turned a couple of vintage mtb's in gravel bikes, and i had two choices: to switch crank to 2x, or to change FD. I think that road FD will work with mtb cranks, cause road chainrings are generally bigger. But Mtb FD won't with road cranks, cause of "shorter" cage. I have just working on conversion of "Wheeler 5400 cross line" into gravel/cyclocross/atb or "one bike to rule them all". Everything is STX except brifters- the are Sora 3x8. Frame itself doesn't have cable routing for down pull FD, so i must improvise with housing if i want to install RSX triple fd. Another solution is to mount shimano A050 triple (butterfly) shifter on bars, and to use left brifter just as brake lever. ( I can not find for a long time bar end shifters in my area, which are also one of solutions) I plan to buy new 8 speed Acera 3020 RD, which can work with 40t cassette. That will give me more than enough gears and ratio for all rounder. IMO everything above 8 speeds is waist of money: you pay significantly more than you actually get. And also, i have more ratio with 3x8 than 1x12 I would recommend also Micro New brifters 3x7/ 3/8 from ali express. They are about 30$ and work surprisingly well
@@NumenorCycles Ok so using the shimano frame specs manual from 2014. I got this for numbers. Chainring spacing. Road 3X8 Large chainring to middle 8mm, middle to small 7.7mm. Road 2X8 Large chainring to small 7.6mm. Next, MTB 7,8 speedX3. 7.8mm between all chainrings. MTB 6,7,8 speed X , Large to middle 8.2mm, middle to small 7,3. So small differences here. Of course, all this is based on modern claris road and tourney for the mtb stuff. Would need to find an older frame spec catalogue. Question - is the spacing due to cable pull or design of derailleur? Yep seen those on ali, look good. Try to get suntour butterfly shifters which are more elegant. If you get hold of a triple road RSX, you can probably change the chainring spacers with the STX one’s or vice versa. Then spacing is optimal (hypothetically). I thought the difference with road and MTB derailleurs was the shape of the cage, one being more curved for the larger chainrings. Let me know what happens
@@atboy4342 i forgot to tell, that recently, when i restored and converted Gt Karakoram, i had put triple rsx fd, and it perfectly worked with stx crans snd micro new 3x8 brifters

Fine, same pull ratio under 9s, so all compatible. Unfortunately, its a little bit bulky derailleur
