    Fun fact! The lead singer actually has a condition where his vocal cords are further apart than they're supposed to be. He physically cannot get cord closure which is why he decided to do rock instead of another contemporary genre.

    So many amazing songs from Skillet! Jen is one of very few drummers that can thrash her kit, and still sing as she does. Her solo band is also incredible. The great thing about Skillet is that their music just rocks. If you listen closely to the lyrics, and know things about Christianity, then you can understand what he is singing about. If you're not religious, the music and lyrics sound good either way.

    Fun fact with the drummer, Jen, is that nobody really knew she was a great singer when she joined the band, herself included. Korey Cooper (girl guitarist & John Cooper's wife) sang female parts prior to Jen joining but apparently wasn't available to record a demo so they got Jen to do it in her absence and she just impressed everybody. Korey *may* have been unavailable on purpose because she doesn't really like being the spotlight - watch any of their band interviews and John and Jen (the singers) do *all* the talking. Korey & Seth (lead guitar) just sit quietly.

    • @ForTheBrotherhood
      @ForTheBrotherhood Год назад +2

      Also, Korey stopped singing live at all some tima after Jen joined. You can hear, that what she pretends to sing and the studio version is 100% identical (Songs where she sang, especially hearable on The Last Night)

    Skillet always tries to put a message of hope into their songs, John (lead singer) just really wants to connect with people and give them something. Should definitely check out more Skillet, the way John and Jens voice pair is great. Not Gonna Die, Fire and Fury, Legendary, Feel Invincible are just a few. Jen has her own album Under Ledger, would def recomend listening. What I find amazing is when Jen joined Skillet she had only been drumming for about 4 years, was just under 18, and was about to give up because she didn't think she was good enough. Korey (John's wife who also does guitar, keyboard, mixing, basically everything) had to convince both Jen to try out and John to let her.

  • @Flash33c
    @Flash33c 2 года назад +64

    Fun fact about Jen: Awake (the album this song is from) is actually when she started singing for the band on studio albums (technically her debut of sorts was Comatose Comes Alive, a live album). Whenever you hear female vocals from Awake onwards it's Jen, while female vocals from Comatose before are Korey.

      Yo, when I first heard Rebirthing from Comatose, I heard female vocals and thought it was Jen singing at first. Then I looked up the music video and saw it was in fact Korey singing. Should’ve known; Jen’s voice is a little more sharper and clean, whereas Korey’s is also clear but also a tad breathy.

    This band has been around for ages, lots of experience and developing their sound. The cool thing about Christian rock is they don't usually sing about trivial things but are deep and really believe in what they are singing (no pun intended). The point is there is an intensity there.

    There are a lot of Christian Rock or Christian Inspired Rock acts out there. Bands like Creed and Flyleaf are more Christian inspired, while Skillet, POD, Switchfoot, Red and Fireflight are more focused.
    I know a lot of people that were pulled from some dark places thanks to Christian music. Not saying they actually became Christian but the message resonated with them.

    As a drummer, I always have mad respect for anyone who can sing while they drum.
    When you play the drums, you already play from 10-50 instruments in one, doing different rhythms at the same time, cross rhythms and counter melodies.
    Other instruments is just that, one instrument most of the time, and follow one line.
    But on drums you can sometimes do multiple musical lines at the same time, and play off balance and so on.
    And being able to sing while doing that is really insane.
    I am no super drummer in any way. I have tried to sing while playing, and its really hard because you have to cut it completely off from the drumming, you can't play and sing like you do on a guitar where the two goes together, on drums you have to do the two things at the same time apart.
    So whenever I see a drummer sing. I can only respect it.
    First time I really noticed it was with the band Haste the Day, and a song called American love, and that made me really start looking into that, and try it out.

    Being a follower of the genre, I immediately recognize the influence of symphonic metal here complete with an exhausting performance by the drummer...
    She has a perfect voice for this, her soaring clarity makes me wonder if she should be the front singer; he has a voice that adds their earthy, 'growly' dimension...
