I helped an elderly woman, never having driven, get her official photo ID a few years back so she could vote and access her tiny bank account. She had to pay $25 for a copy of her birth certificate to be sent to her. Then I had to drive her to the DMV where we had to wait in line for 3 hours to get her photo ID as well as pay for that. All this was a real burden for someone on a small Social Security income. Just waiting in hard chairs was tough on her with her arthritis. And no way could she have afforded to get a taxi to take her to that DMV and then another to take her home. I can’t respect someone like that guy who had a leg up because of his Dad’s career but pretend he had no advantage to get into college, etc.

My mom was born in 1930. Hospitals were far away and not safe for Black women during Jim Crow, so she was delivered by midwife, in her rural South Carolina cottage. She doesn't have a birth certificate and never has. I was able to get her ID in 1989, using a 1940 Florida Census she was listed in. They won't accept that now, so her ID expired in 2021 and we can't renew it.
My grandma born around 1900 in Nebraska was able to get a birth certificate generated based on her birth recorded in the family bible and her baptismal record. If she is still living and you have those documents, you should be able to get a birth certificate created. She had to do that to get social security. Then your Mom can get an ID with that birth certificate. Good luck.

As a child of parents that grew up in the Jim Crow south (more so my mother in SC), my mother knew that the voter ID law was this hinder Black people from voting.
Growing in Jim Crow Florence, SC i saw the difficulties and roadblocks put in place to prevent my people from voting. But I had an Uncle Jonas who made sure his cab company drivers were available to get anyone who wanted to vote to the voting places.

I was born and raised in TX but have been a transplant to Florida since 1991. I had to renew my drivers license down here in Florida last year. I had to supply a certified birth certificate to renew my license. I have never had to show proof of citizenship to renew my drivers license in my 61 years on this planet. I had to contact the vital records in Texas to request a certified birth certificate that cost me $75 and took a month to receive. Then another $35 fee to renew my Florida drivers license. These are also essentially poll taxes.
And people making $30k and under may not be able to afford that extra $110!! Reps think we’re stupid and don’t see what they’re doing but we see them and we DO know what they’re doin!! Once you’re in the military, you get the Common Access Card (CAC) issued to you. Depending on when and where you lose that CAC, you may face severe consequences.

I am Hispanic and I don’t know one US citizen Hispanic that doesn’t have a government issued picture ID. Voting is so important that I will do what it takes to make sure I have a valid ID. It’s that important to me.
That's amazing for you...ID's/birth certificates are expensive especially when you live at or below the poverty line..start adding in factor outside of people's control like my Hispanic US born father having a birth certificate that classified him as "colored" bcuz when he was born there were only 3 options often times only 2..black, colored or white.. making it so that to this day every time he has to present it they question its authenticity. Not a whole new ID. Use existing US issued ID's such as State ID, Driver's license, passport, military etc. The point of the ID is to match the Photo with the name on the voter registration. Only 17 states dont do this.

Being raised as a white conservative, people like Rep Hunt are loved. My family would point to these individuals to condition us that "this was reality". I had no idea how bad things were in this country until I was in my 30s. I live in AZ and falsely believed that "we weren't racist like the south" because of the "diversity". Through years of learning and listening to diverse perspectives, like this network, I learned. As soon as Rep. Hunt started speaking about his family in the military and going to West Point, and living in Houston, told me he had a VERY different reality than most Black people. Sadly, I've encountered men like him where I was arguing Systemic Racism and they were denying. It's sad that they don't realize, as mentioned here, he's representing white people. He's a very small minority of Black People who believe this crap. Yet, doesn't question why that may be? It's sad. My mom was born in 1930. Hospitals were far away and not safe for Black women during Jim Crow, so she was delivered by midwife, in her rural South Carolina cottage. She doesn't have a birth certificate and never has. I was able to get her ID in 1989, using a 1940 Florida Census she was listed in. They won't accept that now, so her ID expired in 2021 and we can't renew it.
My grandma born around 1900 in Nebraska was able to get a birth certificate generated based on her birth recorded in the family bible and her baptismal record. If she is still living and you have those documents, you should be able to get a birth certificate created. She had to do that to get social security. Then your Mom can get an ID with that birth certificate. Good luck.

As a child of parents that grew up in the Jim Crow south (more so my mother in SC), my mother knew that the voter ID law was this hinder Black people from voting.

I had to contact the vital records in Texas to request a certified birth certificate that cost me $75 and took a month to receive. Then another $35 fee to renew my Florida drivers license. These are also essentially poll taxes.

Once you’re in the military, you get the Common Access Card (CAC) issued to you. Depending on when and where you lose that CAC, you may face severe consequences.

I am Hispanic and I don’t know one US citizen Hispanic that doesn’t have a government issued picture ID. Voting is so important that I will do what it takes to make sure I have a valid ID. It’s that important to me.
If you're living below the poverty line an ID can be out of reach.
That's amazing for you...ID's/birth certificates are expensive especially when you live at or below the poverty line..start adding in factor outside of people's control like my Hispanic US born father having a birth certificate that classified him as "colored" bcuz when he was born there were only 3 options often times only 2..black, colored or white.. making it so that to this day every time he has to present it they question its authenticity.
A good thing to remember is if voting was to be that "easy" & "accessible" to everyone regardless of race..our voting rights wouldn't be the first thing taken away for serving time prisons/jail..those for profit prisons filled with black and brown folks.
Some Americans don't have legit birth certificates. Some have misspelled name due to people not caring about the birth of minorities back in the day.

VOTERS REGISTRATION department needs to issue a voter Ids.
Not a whole new ID. Use existing US issued ID's such as State ID, Driver's license, passport, military etc. The point of the ID is to match the Photo with the name on the voter registration. Only 17 states dont do this.

I am 68 years old I have been a registered voter for 50 yrs. When I voted in my first election NO ID was required! Just my voters registration card. This ID thing is a new and recent phenomenon

I was kicked off the voter roll TWICE in Texas. I have had the same address, bank account, driver’s license, VA home of record for the past 8 years. And TWICE in 8 years I’ve been kicked off the voter roll.

INTERESTING!! Around 2015 I suddenly started receiving voter registration card for previous (Republican) homeowner who died in 1997. If she lived, she would be like 120. 🤔🤔🤔🤔 I NEVER received any mail for that woman except voter card. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who the cheaters are.

Being raised as a white conservative, people like Rep Hunt are loved. My family would point to these individuals to condition us that "this was reality". I had no idea how bad things were in this country until I was in my 30s. I live in AZ and falsely believed that "we weren't racist like the south" because of the "diversity". Through years of learning and listening to diverse perspectives, like this network, I learned. As soon as Rep. Hunt started speaking about his family in the military and going to West Point, and living in Houston, told me he had a VERY different reality than most Black people. Sadly, I've encountered men like him where I was arguing Systemic Racism and they were denying. It's sad that they don't realize, as mentioned here, he's representing white people. He's a very small minority of Black People who believe this crap. Yet, doesn't question why that may be? It's sad. I realize this network is geared toward Black people, but you're educating and growing some of us white people too. Thank you.
