- Celebrate Miriam Makeba nicknamed Mama Africa. Here she sings a Xhosa Wedding Song: Qongqothwane aka The Click Song. Miriam was a Grammy Award winning South African Singer and Civil Rights Activist. She was born on March 4, 1932. She was held in exile for 30 years and not allowed to return home for speaking out and fighting for justice in South Africa. Her passport was cancelled and her music was banned from being played or bought in her own country. She continued to sing songs of hope speak out and struggled to help put a new face of order in South Africa and racial injustice all over the world. She was born March 4, 1932 and while performing in Italy she collapsed and died on November 10, 2008.
Igqira lendlela nguqo ngqothwane
-The witchdoctor of the road is the beetle
Igqirha lendlela kuthwa nguqo ngqothwane
-The witchdoctor of the road is said to be the beetle
Seleqabele gqi thapha nguqo ngqothwane
-He has passed by up the steep hill, the beetle
Selequbule gqi thapha nguqo ngqothwane
-He did pass by up the steep hill, the beetle

I heard this as a little girl in the south bronx over 50 years ago and it blew my mind. tried and tried to make to sounds, learned the melody, but never the words fully. Love her, loved her music which informed my childhood, All prAises!
That’s such a great story. She means a lot to a lot of people and it makes me smile that she makes you smile.
The way she does that click is so cool!
seven years late but Xhosa actually has 18 phonemic clicks, and Xhosa speakers can distinguish between all of them. It's pretty cool.
YES! I am "HERE" because of Trevor Noah, but I've been a fan of Makeba long before Trevor was born. Beautiful lady who made beautiful meaningful music. 🌹
To keep the vibrations of the motherland,
To keep the rituals of the shaman and their mystery,
The girded garment of our history
She spoke from her soul without gerund
To keep our vocals far from moribund
To show that language is mere profanity
To baffle the scholars and evoke the Goddess divinity
She resonated a neverending strand of mantras
Singing from the depths of her DNA as to invoke tantras
The meaning which contain multiple entendres
_something i wrote after hearing this song_
+Jonas Kgomo ... could you please translate the lyrics forgiving my ignorance. thank you.

Damn dude. That's such a beautiful poem. I came here, because my girlfriend is helping me learn kiswahili, and she showed me the beautiful song Malaika. Isn't Miriam amazing? What a blessed day today is.
Everytime I hear this song it brings a joy to my heart
Thank you Ginger. I lived in South Africa some years ago, learned to speak Zulu (poorly), but was never able to learn Xhosa well enough to understand the lyrics to this song.
This kind of music never ever grows old..they don't do it like this no more😢
i'm real xhosa royalty and i greatly appreciate this upload
I saw her in Redondo Beach with Willie Bobo at Howard Rumseys. the presence of this woman was awesome . William Jimmy Smith Miriam.... god music just doesn't happen that way too often. we are blessed,
Yes, in old South African culture, weddings were very distinguished & had elaborate, lengthy rituals. Rituals typically pertain 2 matters of illness & psychological illness. The reason she is explaining who & where the witchdoctor was because he looked lik a regular person; not with wild hair, a painted face or half clothed & chanting. This doctor gives advice & wisdom 2 the newly married couple. The doctor has a message 2 keep balance & harmony n the marriage. She explained this n an interview.
Thank you so much for the explanation
Why is a beetle the symbol for him?
@@everettduncan7543 Beetles symbolize strength, wisdom, endurance and adaptability. Since beetles carry strong sense of spiritual resilience, they were and still are often used with casting spells and other rituals.
@@GingerSpice414 makes sense because of their biological characteristics, namely the sheer number of species of them and their elytra.
Her voice is stunning!
Thank you very much for explaining the meaning of a song I like so much. Mama Africa lives in all her songs.
Aaahh yes -- evokes sweet memories.
Who else is here because of TREVOR NOAH?! hahaha Great language. Great song.

☝🏽✌🏽
May i just say this woman is wonderful part of south african history she helped in the fight against the forced removals from sophia town and might i say if uve ever heard of nelson mandela they both came from sophiatown and both helped fight against apartheid and she is a wonderful woman Trevor noah should be ashamed to mock this wonderful woman thanks to her nelson Mandela hugh masekela and many many more people south africa is a free country and im glad i didn't have to grow up in apartheid yes im white so i wouldn't have suffered but many of my friends would have ng to mention that the reason im on this page is BC im doing history homework on her its a shame trevor noah mocked her it really is
I grew up listening to this music, and no I am not from South Africa. She was popular in the sixties when I was a little girl. My mom had her records and I played them all the time. This music bring me back. .....I do like Trevor, though.

For me it's almost impossibile to produce such clic consonant! I know that Xhosas borrowed them from the Khoi-san long time ago..How strange, how amazing!!

Right sister
Am I the only one here because of Siki Jo-an???
Africa has some great stuff. Specially, musically. I'm very angry and shocked that all we hear about Africa as we grow up in the west is how "inferior" it is. The poverty, the "savageness", and all this other stuff said with a negative connotation. It was when I took a World Music class that my eyes opened and I got interested in learning more about the continent. It really, really feels like somebody is doing this on purpose.
Awww poor lady! That is very sad to hear GingerSpice!! : (
Miriam said this song was song when a young girl gets married. From your interpretation of the song how does it relate to marriage? Could you explain?
What's the meaning of the song please, I speak Zulu
