  • Celebrate Miriam Makeba nicknamed Mama Africa. Here she sings a Xhosa Wedding Song: Qongqothwane aka The Click Song. Miriam was a Grammy Award winning South African Singer and Civil Rights Activist. She was born on March 4, 1932. She was held in exile for 30 years and not allowed to return home for speaking out and fighting for justice in South Africa. Her passport was cancelled and her music was banned from being played or bought in her own country. She continued to sing songs of hope speak out and struggled to help put a new face of order in South Africa and racial injustice all over the world. She was born March 4, 1932 and while performing in Italy she collapsed and died on November 10, 2008.

I heard this as a little girl in the south bronx over 50 years ago and it blew my mind. tried and tried to make to sounds, learned the melody, but never the words fully. Love her, loved her music which informed my childhood, All prAises!

seven years late but Xhosa actually has 18 phonemic clicks, and Xhosa speakers can distinguish between all of them. It's pretty cool.

YES! I am "HERE" because of Trevor Noah, but I've been a fan of Makeba long before Trevor was born. Beautiful lady who made beautiful meaningful music. 🌹

To keep the vibrations of the motherland,
To keep the rituals of the shaman and their mystery,
The girded garment of our history
She spoke from her soul without gerund
To keep our vocals far from moribund
To show that language is mere profanity
To baffle the scholars and evoke the Goddess divinity
She resonated a neverending strand of mantras
Singing from the depths of her DNA as to invoke tantras
The meaning which contain multiple entendres
_something i wrote after hearing this song_

Yes, in old South African culture, weddings were very distinguished & had elaborate, lengthy rituals. Rituals typically pertain 2 matters of illness & psychological illness. The reason she is explaining who & where the witchdoctor was because he looked lik a regular person; not with wild hair, a painted face or half clothed & chanting. This doctor gives advice & wisdom 2 the newly married couple. The doctor has a message 2 keep balance & harmony n the marriage. She explained this n an interview.

@@everettduncan7543 Beetles symbolize strength, wisdom, endurance and adaptability. Since beetles carry strong sense of spiritual resilience, they were and still are often used with casting spells and other rituals.

Africa has some great stuff. Specially, musically. I'm very angry and shocked that all we hear about Africa as we grow up in the west is how "inferior" it is. The poverty, the "savageness", and all this other stuff said with a negative connotation. It was when I took a World Music class that my eyes opened and I got interested in learning more about the continent. It really, really feels like somebody is doing this on purpose.
