I learned I was about 15 % Portuguese and one day realized that the Southern Sicilian I learned from Mi Nonnu Onfrio was actually Portuguese slang. I always wonder why some Italian speakers asked what language is that? Spanish? Well all Latin languages share some feeling and speech. I grew up on Flamenco and have a large collection of Fado from my Father. RIP Beautiful songs. Love it!!

In the early '70s my mother and aunt pilgrimage to New York to hear Amalia in concert at Lincoln Center. They met her backstage and complimented her in old world Portuguese (my grandparents were Madeiran). She invited them to stay with her when she visited Lisbon. For all I know everyone got the same invitation - but when they actually did, Amalia was on tour so they stayed with her sister! How down to earth can you get.
fado absolutely beautiful music. literally from the soul. potent at stirring powerful emotions. growing up in an Portuguese family am sorry to say i brushed it off as the music of my old parents. now i have rediscovered it by a chance hearing of a song by a contemporary artist Ana Moura on an English radio station in Canada and was struck by the yearning emotion felt in that particular piece. Now I wonder what the hell i was thinking before. Absolutely beautiful. and my parents were right Amalia really is the queen of fado. What a gifted woman she was.
When I first travelled to Lisbon it was just a just a western European city like any other. Fado made Lisbon for me. A dark basement restaurant, a decanter of delicious wine, and Fado. Go to all the historical sites, they're beautiful. When you're done settle down with some wonderful food, a glass of wine, and listen to the songs of mariners who were traveling across the globe hundreds of years ago.
I love Portuguese people and their soulful songs and food. Fado songs touch me deep though I do not understand the words.The guitar played is so nice. No words can describe the joy it brings to hear the guitar of Portugal. God bless the land and its people.

This is not Luso language. The Luso language was a celtoid language from the Antiquity that died out to Latin. Portuguese is an evolution of Latin, the language that killed Lusitanian, they have nothing to do with one another.
