I have a staghorn fern which I have had for a while. It still does not have the shield. The one I bought yesterday has a small green one. Why hasn't the other one got a shield yet.
hey there! i also live in japan & so maybe you can help me out. i have a mounted elkhorn fern in a kokedama that has 3 short leaves. i imagine they have similar needs to a staghorn fern but is watering it every 3 days too much? i've been reading everywhere that they prefer to dry out between waterings but also you shouldn't let baby ferns dry out. which is it lol? i also have it set under a grow light but why are the tips of my leaves becoming limp and soft? i initially thought it was underwatered because i never soaked the whole rootball for 30~60 min but only used a watering can. so i soaked it for about 50 min but it's been 2 days now & the leaves are still limp & soft. is it too much light? what am i doing wrong here?
Hi. 2 of my staghorn fern only has one leaf. It's about 12 inches tall, one single leaf and it's not putting out new leaves like the other one. Also not putting out any new padding leaves at the base. What should I do? And what could be the problem,?
What kind of lighting when they're inside..... I know in their natural habitat, they're under a canopy and love dappled light but what about when inside........ (I'd bring mine outside but don't have a place where it wouldn't get burned.) Someone on another video said they need 1000 or 1500 FC but his looked like it was getting too much light and the leaves were pale.
Help, all I hear is how easy stags are to grow BUT NOT WITH ME.! I was able to purchase a substantial staghorn fern several months ago. I thought my bathroom would be the perfect location, diffused east sun, good humidity and week by week I have the fronds just fall from the plant. This plant came in an 10" hanging basket, planted in dirt. I water and let dry out, my shields are the size of a softball, NO new growth in any manner and I am beyond frustrated. I am getting ready to pull it out of the soil and try to salvage it on a mount. What happens is the very 1/8" of the fronds at the base dies off, it turns dark brown and drops to the floor. The plant does not seem to be dehydrated and I would question if my bathroom gets too warm in the room for it but this problem started about 3 months ago when the room had air conditioning. Please, any suggestions? I tried this plant in the mid 70's and failed at it also when most all of my plants thrive. I hate to divorce this fabulous plant, giving it another chance but I am at my witts end.

Its funny cause my stag horn fern wont grow unless I put it in a bog that I made for some predatory plants. I had to bring it in for the winter and it has stopped growing. We'll see what happens this spring.
It's GREAT to keep it in the bathroom, they really like the humidity in there. However you can keep them elsewhere in the house so long as the light levels are good and you are able to keep fairly high humidity.
Finally found the answer to what that white coat about. Thank your for sharing!
Thank you for this : ) They just look so...majestic and I wanted learn more about them.

Do you use a pot when you're getting a pup from a staghorn fern to grow?
Is cactus soil a good medium to grow them in when in pots and water from the bottom a similar frequency to my aloes?
My fern is large, potted but is floppy, what can i do?

I keep mine in a diffused Western exposure in my bathroom. No direct sun, but it is fairly bright in there.

Can you show us how to mount next
Is it alright to keep this plant in the bathroom or should it be in other places. Thank you.

What happens if the staghorn doesn't get a shield.
Thank youuu ❤️
I mounted mine and they dont have a shield. Is that something that comes w age?
Yes. They typically don't form a basal frond for a while and it takes even longer for it to turn brown.
Very nice
See the our platycerium in SriLanka .🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍👍👍
For what I can see they are Elkhorn furans.🤨🧐🇦🇺
