I'm so happy to see this number at last, after all the times I have asked for it. This is the first big opening producion number in Academy Awards history. Joel Grey had just finished the shooting of Cabaret. Thanks a lot for sharing this with us.
Actually, Cabaret had been released two months before - remember, the Oscars used to occur in April - rocketing Grey from semi-known Broadway quantity to superstar nearly overnight - same for James Caan who, though he'd been around since the late 60s had, less than a month before - become a bonafide celeb with the March release of 'The Godfather'. It's fascinating to note the the two main contenders for Oscars the following year (the two aforementioned films) were released extremely early in 1972 - such was critical and cultural memory...now it seems anyone who wants a crack at a statue waits until October at the earliest...

Old Hollywood shames today's tasteless Hollywood right into the gutter. Angers me to see how much they now seek to diminish and destroy the talents and achievements of better artists nearly a lifetime ago.
Joel Grey: father of actress Jennifer Grey (best known for Dirty 🕺 and for being the Season 11 Champion of 💃 with the ✨) and the late Brad Grey (known for being the chairman of Paramount Pictures and the co-founder of what is now Brillstein Entertainment Partners with the late Bernie Brillstein)!
Would it be possible to get d.v.d of the entire awards show? And also, I would like to know if it would be possible to get a d.v.d of the 1972 14th annual grammy awards.
Oh please politics were always a part of Hollywood. Have you heard of the blacklisting in the 1950’s? Or how about Marlon Brando refusing his Oscar and Vanessa Redgrave's speech, both in the 70’s? Quit looking at the past through rose colored glasses.
It's such a shame the Oscar ceremony and winner's use this platform to express their opinions on politics war and racism these are important topics I get that but this ceremony is dedicated to artists and film maker's

The Godfather movie was released in March 1972--and was already a smash hit--a few weeks prior to this April 1972 Oscar telecast.
