As a New York native who has lived most of his life in Minnesota, I’m a huge fan of both teams and follow them closely. At a base level, I think this trade makes sense. The Knicks had a serious deficit at Center after Hartenstein signed with the Thunder. Also with Kat’s max contract kicking in, and all the draft picks traded away in the Gobert trade, the Wolves had zero flexibility for years to come. You could also argue that the Wolves maxed out their potential last year, and the competition in the league is only getting stronger. I hope I’m wrong, but ultimately I feel like this is a lose-lose trade. I think every single player involved will play worse on their new team, and will have a negative effect on the current team chemistry which has been a strength for both teams. I don’t think this is a good fit for anyone.
The competition is still driven by the talent of star players. Wolves having zero flexibility was going to be a thing since they needed to commit their cap to the only legit talents they had. Being KAT on his 3rd contract and ANT on his MAX deal extension. They also gave up a bunch of role players to the Jazz (which one is still growing but doesn't have a high ceiling) for Gobert whose defense still impacts winning basketball in the regular season (and the playoffs for the Wolves at least). What do the 5 first round picks matter that the Jazz got if the Wolves are still playoff hopefuls? Ainge was able to complete his Celtics rebuild because he lucked out getting his franchise guys in the top 3 of the 2016 and 2017 of the draft. If he can't pick that high for the Jazz he's not getting a franchise player anytime soon. And no bad team is going to trade their top spots in the draft for the next 2-3 years for Ainge's magical beans of protected picks from other teams.
Is it possible that the Minnesota front office, the same front office that gave up that ridiculous package for Gobert, just isn't very good at their job? Is it possible KAT has been held back in a shitty wolves organization like so many before him?
If MN thought KAT could be the #2 on a championship team they would have kept him. It is that simple. This was a basketball trade first with the accompanying and important cap and salary implications as secondary, but necessary factors.
@@DexterFabian I don't think it is that simple. I think they came close last year, but realized they cannot sign Edwards and keep KAT, so they got an expiring Randle and a cheap DVD to replace him and hope that it works out.

One thing I question about the Knicks getting KAT, is that they will expect to and need him to close as a 5. I don't think he's shown to be consistent at that position especially defensively in the playoffs. There will be a lot of games where he fouls out and their defense collapses due to a lack of size.
@@maxdubs222 I don't believe Meech is as good of a drop coverage big to cover for KAT like that. Especially against 5 and out teams. Knicks do have until trade deadline to upgrade that center position tho.
The CBA is paradoxically stupid. The CBA killed the Knicks chances of rightfully signing IHart who the Knicks worked hard on to improve while allowing loopholes for this Kat trade. In both cases the salary controls they wanted went actually out of control.
DiVincenzo wasn’t go to have the same role with Bridges on the team. Plus they have other guys who can fit open roles. Randle and Brunson weren’t going to be the ideal pairing together. Plus Randle needs a new contract. Knicks were not paying him what he expects and for the term he would like.
Dirk and Gasol didn't have the minerals until they played with players who fit their skill set and then they became champions and their toughness is now praised. I trust KAT's 40% 3-point shooting at 7-foot over any narrative about his toughness.
dirk and gasol were very cerebral players. KAT is more talented than both of them, but he has a lethal combination of mental deficits: fragility AND stupidity. at his age, averaging 5 fouls per game in the playoffs is appalling. and thats just the most glaring example of his lack of basketball iq and awareness. he is not at all on the same level as gasol and dirk in that regard, not even the same league
@@HarrisonHollersRandle has literally been pure trash in the playoffs, plays even worse D than KAT in early years, reverts to ISO ball too much, and his style directly conflicts with Brunsons. KAT is just a much better player/fit.
@@zalemdreamsDirk and Gasol were winners in all levels (best place was their national teams). Kat on the other hand was always considered soft with low basketball IQ. KAT’s moment to shine was last year’s playoff run with an excellent team and he under performed. He is a glorified roll player at best.
Being disappoint in KAT and saying he’s the reason they don’t go to the finals is ridiculous. They don’t sweep the Suns without his big games and defense on KD. They don’t win the Denver series without his defense on Jokic. The ONLY reason the Wolves didn’t go to the finals is because the entire team didn’t show up against Dallas because they were exhausted from the Denver series. And Luka and Kyrie went nuclear. I’m not sure any team would have beat Dallas in that WCF with the way they were shooting.
Does Ryan know who Mitchell Robinson is???? just as effective as Gobert defensively, Mitchell is DPOY candidate and just needs to actually be on the court to show it
Many folks know who Meech is. Past the 2022 season he's played 90 regular season games. When he wasn't on the court Hartenstein took those 25 minutes a night and showed why he was a far better big who can play that limited role. Also find me a season where Mitch Rob's defense got the team 40+ wins babysitting two small guards who can't play defense.
The Wolves doing this for 1 year of Randle Donte and a first which will be a second round pick, no way do they have money for Randle without going over 2nd apron
The Kincks are so stupid. They should have tried to move Robinson to clear some cap space and then resign Hartenstein. Easier said than done, yes, but the better option and kept the Knicks identity. Instead, they trade two tough guys that play Thibs ball for soft Towns who is one of the lowest hoops IQ guys as compared to his talent in the league, and disappears in the playoffs. Stupid fouls, and when he is hot he starts to play abnormally and chases stats that can cost games. My favorite part of this trade though is that since Towns is going to the big market Knicks all of his warts are forgotten, especially by major media, and he is dang Willis Reed all of a sudden. Thanks Rusillo, for at least keeping some semblance of sanity in this trade.
They couldn't offer him more than they did because of nba contract rules. They offered him the most they could. It wasn't about freeing up money. This isn't the NFL where you can offer guys as much as you want. There's a cap on how much players can make depending on their situation.
Ryen, how can you say NY wins the trade on a 'talent in/talent out' basis? Julius Randle is as talented as KAT or if not as talented, then very close behind. Then add Divincenzo, who is not only talented, but plays hard and plays big, something that can't be said for Towns. Then add on to that whatever talent value you want to attribute to the pick NY gave up. From my perspective, the trade went 70/30 in favour of Minnesota. Lots of people will disagree with me due to rating Towns much higher than I do, but the Knicks gave up waaay too much. Towns, in my opinion is one of the most overpaid players in the league. The x factor in this is that NY gave up 'guts', not so much in Randle, but definitely in DV. With Towns, you're getting a soft, erratic, foul-prone player who thinks he's much better than he is. Definitely not what the Knicks need to push through this season.
It appears to be an analytics based move. KAT is a great screener in the pick and roll/pop. Brunson is a great pick and roll/pop guard. Because of his ties to Leon Rose, KAT was always the target once he signed that big deal. The whole league (if they were paying attention) understood the Wolves were going to trade KAT before that big deal kicked in. Randle is as good or better in a vacuum, I guess, but he's not nearly as good of a roll/pop man and can't shoot nearly as well. He's also an inferior defender. He's also shown questionable on court character in the past by being aggressive with his teammates/coaches (but never aggressive with opponents). In short, Leon seems to have more faith in KAT both as a player and as a man.
The Lakers players act like they were not responsible for any of there poor play. Ham was not a good coach but he is being used as a scapegoat. Lakers are not even top 5 in the west. EVERY YEAR THE LAKERS ARE UNREALISTIC just like the Knicks minus this year
KAT wilts in the biggest games. He is getting hurt now every year and playing about 55 games and of those, he sits a bunch because of his constant stupid fouls. I don't care that Randle is sometimes a selfish ball player. He either plays like an all-star OR he gets paid by someone else as TC trades him for players and picks. Wolves win.
Bron had more help and spacing D.Rose lead his team to the number 1 seed and head to head best LeBron and the Heat more then they beat them 2-1 2-0 or 3-1 something like that only people hating on d.Rose MVP are literally LeBron fans rose was playing with 2 non shooters terrible spacing and lead the way on offense and locked up on defense
do you like 19ppg playoffs AND 35%threes playoffs AND $55million/year for 4 years??? then KAT is the baller for you... do not forget the dumb n dumber fouls he provides!!! fax!!!
The Wolves will come out better from the KAT trade if Anthony Edwards is as good or better than advertised. It leads me to think the Minnesota brain trust saw no future with Towns as one of the franchise cornerstones, and then forking out that amount of money for him. It's likely a "one step backward, two steps forward" approach that will see them let Randle go for other building blocks or as fodder for a major trade. Or, if he plays well enough, he'll get to stay but not with the same price tag as Towns. That question you raised at the end of that segment encapsulates the KAT conundrum - a guy this good should be off-limits in a trade. I'm bullish on Edwards but he's setting off a few alarm bells. Guys getting crowned too soon often crumble either by the weight of their over-inflated ego or by unrealistic expectations, or both. I'd like for him to keep up that energy regardless, we have room for irrational confidence guys in the league, makes the NBA almost as interesting as the WWE in the Attitude Era.
"The Wolves will come out better from the KAT trade if Anthony Edwards is as good or better than advertised." This is how I always looked at how the Wolves won the Gobert trade. It was never about the 'lack of depth' the Wolves would miss all for a high priced big who has proven his worth. It was about ANT turning into a top 10 player at such a young age. And ultimately an elite caliber player before he hit the end of his extension in 2029. And IMO as much as you have alarm bells going off, the Wolves have *NEVER* had a complete offensive prospect come to them via the draft like ANT. Even in the 20-30 some odd years that crusty Glen Taylor owned the team, it was prospects who were overrated from college (Laettner, Marbury, KAT, Wiggins), the defensive juggernaut whose offense wasn't good enough (Garnett) and whiffing everything else in between (Kevin Love, Rubio, etc.) The only teeth the Wolves ever had as a wing player was from a trade that former GM/HC Thibs made to get Jimmy 'Buckets' Butler in the building.
@@t4d0W I had a good feeling about Ja too. But attention does strange things to people. I’m skeptical until Edwards demonstrates something more. Yes, he is a special player, this season is another year to solidify his place in the game.
@@willingexile3374 I think he's been slowly demonstrating more in his first four seasons. Especially coming from the 2020 draft where he was the true top pick prize and foundation player for a franchise. His size/athleticism has upside especially when he's believes in his ability to finish at the rim and attack downhill more often. He's more comfortable shooting. He's embraced being a perimeter hound on defense. He just has to slowly keep adding things like playing off screens or playmaking with the ball.
I don't understand why everyone isn't talking about how we got Detroit's 1st rounder. This is the most valuable piece to me. Could very easily be a top 3 pick
@@dearmas9068nonsense… stop rewriting history. The Bulls were the best team in the East that year. With Lebron playing with two other Olympians, while Rose had just one other scorer with him in Luol Deng. The Bulls needed every bit of Rose’s buckets. If you bring up Boozer, Bosh matched him and exceeded him.
Ugh you know it's a bad KAT take when they say he was bad on defense till Rudy got there.... It's incorrect he was good on defense the year before Rudy got there because they moved him out of drop coverage into an at the level blitz, do these people even watch the basketball?
Thibs got fired because he was coach AND president of basketball operations. President Thibs, the guy in the office, put coach Thibs, the guy on the court, in some tough spots with his personnel decisions.
Yeah the Knicks could be going into the All Star break with a mediocre record because of this trade, with Towns not fitting in well at all, but I don't think Thibs will get fired as he likely wasn't involved much in this trade. He knows how overrated Towns is and wouldn't have wanted him anywhere near his team.
KAT was traded because Glen Taylor is historically cheap. It was a blatant salary dump. Donte and the pick were the real prize, Randle is just a name on a soon to be expiring contract. Any talk of the Wolves being better with Randle is just PR spin. The Wolves could easily be better, because they got two good players for one, but getting better was not the reason for the trade. Randle could absolutely kill it this year and the Wolves will still not extend him.
Getting better was only possible by making the roster flexible. KAT making 60 million dollars when Ant is 25 and looking for another contract would have been a disaster. Randle, Donte, Dillingham, TSJ can absolutely replace the KAT, Slomo, Jmac production.
It’s funny how everyone criticizes Kat and doesn’t give him any press but as soon as he’s going to a major market everyone is singing his praises and saying he’s going to get them a championship. Bias against Minnesota much?

@@maxdubs222 I don't believe Meech is as good of a drop coverage big to cover for KAT like that. Especially against 5 and out teams. Knicks do have until trade deadline to upgrade that center position tho.
KAT isn’t a competitor he just cares about the money and the fame
How are you such a casual on KAT after this long?
Thank you! Dude is NOT a winner.
You can find negatives with any player and there are more negatives with Randle
You only say this if you haven't been a MN fan watching KAT for 9 years.
Taj Gibson about to get a phone call. 😅
In Minnesota KATs nickname is Stray-Voltage...
Basketball Russillo only! >
i'm worried about thib's blood pressure from KAT picking up too many fouls during an important game
17:00 did Dwight smash Ryen’s girl or something lmao he’s always so salty about Howard
Pretty sure Dwight isn’t interested in girls.
this is spot on, perfect analysis on who KAT really is.
Absolutely correct
The CBA is paradoxically stupid. The CBA killed the Knicks chances of rightfully signing IHart who the Knicks worked hard on to improve while allowing loopholes for this Kat trade. In both cases the salary controls they wanted went actually out of control.
T-Wolves vs Knicks 2025 NBA Finals!! what are the odds? +2500 ?
The Knicks won't come anywhere even close to the finals
Is that Ashton Kutcher!
I hate this trade for the Knicks. Losing DiVencenzo is massive and I guess I'm just super low on KAT. He ain't got the minerals
The video is hilarious on 0.25 speed, may be random but I accidentally left it on for another video…
The Raptors should be penalized for tanking so blatantly.
I am SO glad the Spurs got that TOR pick last year. The next two drafts are good enough for TOR to tank, so it might have conveyed as 2 seconds.
Twolves dumped that big contract and KaT choked against Dallas ugggh, KaT is a great player and I hope he will grow into a winner in NYC!!!
Towns somehow committed 2 fouls in this podcast
Does Ryan know who Mitchell Robinson is???? just as effective as Gobert defensively, Mitchell is DPOY candidate and just needs to actually be on the court to show it
The most important ability is AVAILability.
Ryan’s probably Kats biggest hater 🤣
They should let Tate Frazier on.
KAT is always a silly player
No Ben Simmons in NBA media day observations? Ryen, I'm disappointed!
The Wolves doing this for 1 year of Randle Donte and a first which will be a second round pick, no way do they have money for Randle without going over 2nd apron
Wolves don't want Randle long term. That cap space is the point.
As a Knicks fan, I have the most neutral feeling on this deal. Not sure how to feel
That's because youre' being objective.
We had to get rid of Randle he wouldn’t play defense and his attitude sucked. Plus we needed a big man to space the floor.
@@Brooklynquietmoney agreed on that part, but I have concerns with towns attitude, and defense as well. Offensively fits better for sure.
You should be worried. They just got worse
@@Brooklynquietmoney towns doesn’t play defense either
Russillo dub
Game 2 vs Nuggets. No Gobert. Greatest defensive performance in playoff history. But Kat did nothing. Cause Gobert was there. Right? 😂
@@vinnyb3978ahhh good call out. Thanks for that clarification, I missed that.
No buyers for Rudy, Karl is expensive and they have Naz waiting in the wings.
This is pure hate on KAT. You asked why they were trading him and then answered it but ignored that answer for a spicy one.
wolves cooked
EVERY YEAR THE LAKERS ARE UNREALISTIC just like the Knicks minus this year
Jajaa Sharpe estaba totalmente fumado o loco

Knicks gain talent, lose vibe
Wolves lose talent, gain vibe
do you like 19ppg playoffs AND 35%threes playoffs AND $55million/year for 4 years??? then KAT is the baller for you... do not forget the dumb n dumber fouls he provides!!! fax!!!
I don't know. I can't stand Joel Embiid. His people might be right haha
Kat led the league in offensive fouls.
Wolves Got Better Knicks got better.. most even trade I’ve ever seen
Very tidy eyebrows Mr. Ceruti!
Ryan biased as usual …….doesn’t mention Kat’s contract and wouldn’t his logic also apply to divo and Randle? 😂😂😂😂
"The Wolves will come out better from the KAT trade if Anthony Edwards is as good or better than advertised."
This is how I always looked at how the Wolves won the Gobert trade.
KAT will foul out in the biggest moments, he never helps his cause
I don't understand why everyone isn't talking about how we got Detroit's 1st rounder. This is the most valuable piece to me. Could very easily be a top 3 pick
It's at least top 10 protected next two years 😮
Aaaand those are: a GREAT draft in 25, and a good one in 26 with Boozer and Dybantsa. Detroit will be tanking both years
14:52 I believe what Russillo meant to say was "the refs gave them the most FT attempts in the league to make sure they made the playoffs" 😂
Minnesota welcome to the bottom of the league. Randle is a absolute waste of space 🚮
Anyone who doesn’t understand how and why Rose got that MVP is a dummy 💯😂
Bron deserved it more
@@dearmas9068nonsense… stop rewriting history. The Bulls were the best team in the East that year. With Lebron playing with two other Olympians, while Rose had just one other scorer with him in Luol Deng. The Bulls needed every bit of Rose’s buckets. If you bring up Boozer, Bosh matched him and exceeded him.
@@Dbo_Sports nope. Bron deserved it more, and plenty of people knew it then too.
The Knicks won this trade and I know KAT will fit well with this team 💯
The Knicks literally got worse, son
Ugh you know it's a bad KAT take when they say he was bad on defense till Rudy got there.... It's incorrect he was good on defense the year before Rudy got there because they moved him out of drop coverage into an at the level blitz, do these people even watch the basketball?
That high wall worked because Vando and Jaden were great help defenders. KAT has physical limitations that don’t allow him to be a good defender.
Thibs will be lucky if he’s not fired by February. Kat got him fired once, he’s going to be the Thibs killer.
KAT did not get Thibbs fired, Thibs got himself fired trying to make people stay on a team they clearly weren’t compatible for
Thibs got fired because he was coach AND president of basketball operations.
@@blakelarson5005 Sure they can, but Randle won't be on the team next season.
It’s funny how everyone criticizes Kat and doesn’t give him any press but as soon as he’s going to a major market everyone is singing his praises and saying he’s going to get them a championship. Bias against Minnesota much?
Eh its New York. The media loves to overrate the moves the big market makes.
