Watched the match and pretty sure Tsitsipas had 3 time violations for serving too slowly, yet on 2nd and 3rd times just lost his first serve - I thought the punishment was harsher?
According to 2024 rulebook, taking too long to serve is a time violation, not a code violation. For serving time violations it starts with a warning and then it is a fault for all subsequent violations. If the returner delays the game then it is first a warning and then they lose the point for future violations
@@connorpen By fault I’m sure you mean loss of first serve. There is never a point penalty on serve for a time violation, just a loss of first serve after one warning has been issued
@@DoomOfTheNoldor I’m not sure what you’re trying to clarify. The rules say a time violation by a server on either serve should “result in a fault” (after they’ve been warned). @@DoomOfTheNoldor from the atp rulebook: “If such [first] serve is a fault, then the second serve must be struck by the server without delay.” So this suggests that it is up to the umpire’s discretion to issue a time violation on second serves if it takes too long

Tsitsipas is good, he is just not great. I kept thinking it is just that he needs more killer instinct and to play more agressive but I'm starting to think this is his peak.
His peak has ended 3 years ago, after the French Open final loss and the elbow surgery. He used to be a completely different, drastically better player between 2018 and 2021 (there are many videos from his old matches, the difference is staggering). His biggest problem is not that he hasn't improved, but that the quality of his game has massively declined.
@J.-M. It just seems mentally he has tuned out. I don't think the elbow surgery or physically anything else had changed . He just doesn't seem to have that belief anymore. Opponents attacked his backhand back in 2018 just like they do today , but he would overcome that weakness with grit and determination and will to win. I believe all of his problems right now are mental, and if Djokovic retires anytime soon, he should try to bribe Djokovic a small fortune to coach him
@@federicorusso4378 he made Australian open final in 2023, not too long ago. En route to that final all his opponents went after his backhand but couldn't take him down. Everyone has been hammering at his backhand since 2018. He simply had more fight, belief, will to win . You dont stay in the top 5 for 4 years otherwise.. He has lost that now. All his problems are mental. He has got to find a way to get that belief back
@@federicorusso4378 No. The quality of his game, including his backhand, has massively declined. Nobody was considering his backhand a weakness between 2018 and 2021, because it wasn't. He really had a good backhand in these years, stronger, much more consistent and precise. He was often outplaying his opponents with it. Everything in his game has gone downhill in the last three years. His shots are so much more erratic now, his movement is much worse. Again, anyone who knows his old matches (you can still watch them today) knows how shocking the difference is.
Stistipas could have won. Stefanos must overturn the table during the exchanges. The backhand should be hit flat with an early grip on the ball (like Sampras). Sure, it's riskier, but less than playing on static exchanges. By taking the ball early, the opponents are destabilized in their support. This frees up the game.
This is why you don't mimic other players when learning your strokes. From copying federer he now has a terrible backhand that would probably have worked better two handed.

Tsitsipas is 100% finished. His returning was very weak. 3rd set had immense problems with serve and applying pressure to draper, who wasnt playing good. And in the end, 5-4, serving for match... left on 0 to get broken. And lose match 5-7... Absolutely washed player.
@@Matthew9818 Sometimes they even work with down the line shots, when the ball is unexpectedly short, almost like a half-shank, and the player who's trying to return the ball is standing or running far behind the baseline.
