Justin Pettit I'm just speaking some truths, if you can't follow my thought process you won't understand the message or what I'm revealing. Only other hint I'll give is to keep a close EYE on the Vikings this season.
Madden even said it later in Randy's career that even in his rookie year it was obvious to him and a lot of people that he was already the best player in the league. But because he was so young he didn't want to jinx him or put to much pressure on him so he always put a label on it like most dangerous or fastest player. But everyone knew he was the best. Yeah, but he should have hung it up way before he actually retired. If you watch his last few seasons, he was a shell of his former self. He did exactly what Barry Sanders didn't want to: Play past the point where he was at the top of his game and be forced to retire because he just can't do it anymore. Sure, all the losing in Detroit took its toll on Sanders, but that was only one factor.
@@james_ford86 he probably should have retired at the same time Aikman and Irvin were forced to but he was insistent on passing Payton and stayed 4 more years in the league.
@@scottb3034 Exactly. Sanders didn't do that because he didn't feel he needed to. His play proved he was the best running back of all-time, even without all the career rushing records. It is a simple fact that Sanders is the ONLY RB IN NFL HISTORY to average 1,500+ yards rushing and 10 TDs per season over a 10 year career. Smith's season rushing yards average was quite a bit lower than Sanders', even before Smith started to decline. Smith may have had more TDs, but he also played with Aikman and Irvin, taking much of the defensive attention away from him for a huge portion of his career, while Sanders was THE focus of EVERY SINGLE NFL DEFENSE who faced the Lions during his tenure there. The Lions never had a good QB, had some decent WRs, but their offensive line was trash. The Lions faced a loaded box in the 1990's more than any other team, and Sanders still outproduced every other RB in the NFL during his career. If you took Smith and swapped him with Sanders in their rookie years, putting Smith on the Lions and Sanders on the Cowboys, there's no question that, while Smith might have still had a decent career, it would have been nowhere near HOF level, and Sanders would have shattered every rushing record in the book. The team a player plays on matters a lot more than people realize. Sanders was such a transcendent talent that he produced at an elite level, even on a garbage team. Just imagine what would have happened had he played for a team that was actually good. That alone should put to rest any discussion over who the greatest RB of all time was. The only other RB in NFL history who even has a case is Jim Brown, because he was so dominant, but even then, he played back when the rest of the league wasn't very athletic or strong. If he'd played in the 1970's or later, I don't think he'd have been as dominant as he was, but he still would have been HOF caliber.
@@james_ford86 I agree with some of the stuff you said but not all. Barry was the greatest RUSHER of all-time sure...but he was not the greatest running back. The greatest running back of all-time was Payton and it wasn't that close. The only thing I'd probably take Smith over Sanders for probably is goalline...maybe pass protection but Barry was much better in pretty much every other duty of RB than Emmitt. Lions had a good QB for 1 year of Sanders career. Scott Mitchell was incredible in 1995 as were Herman Moore and Brett Perriman. Moore was also a top 3 WR for awhile...maybe even top 2 behind Jerry (at the very least he was good enough that teams had to worry about him as well as Barry for a few seasons--coincidentally Barry's best of his career outside 1998). And they had oline...Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover don't get HOF consideration if they weren't good...jeff hartings was also decent albeit much better after he left detroit. That still doesn't refute that Barry was the best RB of the 90s. He only had competition from Terrell Davis his last 3 years but Davis had a nice homefield in denver which tired Ds out...also had Elway and those receivers. Smith would have been HOF he just wouldn't have been a 1st ballot type. he'd have gotten 10-12k instead of 18k. Barry I am not sure WOULD have done better than his lions years unless he played longer simply because the Cowboys stopped running Emmitt so heavily after 1995 which is when things picked up for Barry in terms of carries with the lions. Barry played on decent offenses, the defenses are why the Lions were never any good (and QB play in the playoffs not being good enough). Yeah, that's another point in Payton's favor for GOAT running back. He played on worse teams with much worse offenses longer in his career. That said, Barry was not on some powerhouse...the defenses couldn't stop a wet paper bag (58 vs philly in 1997 my god) and the QBs were never scary so defenses keyed on Barry beginning in 1994 which is evidenced by his 13 carry -1 yard playoff game vs Green Bay. Jim Brown played with 2 other HOF RB talents in the backfield, a running back that turned into a HOF WR and a HOF QB...and he was a fullback so he doesn't really qualify. Payton is the greatest to ever play the position though. He could run for power, finesse, run it at goalline or between the 20s...is literally the most prolific non-QB passer of all-time, could run routes and catch the ball like a WR, the best pass blocking RB in history, 31 yard KR average, a 40 yard punt kick (as in he was the punter) in his career...he could do it all. the most complete football player of all time and so the most complete RB of all time. he didn't play with a single HOF or all-pro player on offense until his 8th season in the league and no pro bowl receivers or all-pro QBs (jim mcmahon was undeserving of the pro bowl in 85...but got it anyway on only 15 TDs and 11 picks). He played with a HOF tackle beginning in 1983 and a pro bowl center also in 1983. He also would have broken the single season rushing record in 1977 if the season was 16 games that year instead of 14 (he was on pace for 2116 yards). He also set the single game rushing record while having the flu. Barry is second but it is no slight on him and he was probably the most talented rusher in history.
@@scottb3034 I can't give it to Payton. He played on a MUCH better team than the Lions, and it wasn't even close. That Bears defense was lights out for most of his career and practically single-handedly gave them a Super Bowl win in the 1985 season. Payton played longer than Sanders, and that's the only reason Payton's career numbers are bigger. If Sanders had played that long, I'm confident he would have shattered Payton's totals. But, that's water over/under the bridge and we'll never know. I'll just agree to disagree with you there.

1:42 the reason why Randy’s big day was possible
"When you don't get your feet in position, that's when you have to use your hands and arms" I can listen to John Madden's captain obvious quotes all day.
On a side note, is "Money for Nothing" the only song the Cowboys had that day? A little variety would have been nice.
That was offensive offense in a good way! Life long Vikings fan watching on a Friday night
REST EASY DENNIS GREEN
Thank you Leroy for such a great year..............Vikings Fans have NOT forgot you Bro!!!!!
Would have been cool to see Deion cover Moss if he wasn't hurt
Deion saw film on Moss, and immediately grabs his hammy.
@@alltruthmatters4395 He had turf toe, lol.
It would’ve been one of the greatest matchup in the NFL
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
WOW, THIS GAME BRINGS BACK SOME GOOD MEMORIES!! LOVE SEEING MOSS, CARTER & SMITH. I watched this game in the resort I stayed at on my honeymoon. Darn good team. Hope Moss goes into HOF as a Viking.
1:15:37 Yes what a great regular season for Gary Anderson. He choked when it mattered the most. Thanks Gary.
1998 Vikings vs 1985 Bears
Clorox Bleach 98 Vikes
the 85 Bears would destroy the 98 vikings
69 packers vs 98 vikings
Vikes would crush them, the bears had great Linemen and Linebackers, but they didn't have anyone who could even keep up with Moss, let alone cover him.
1998 Vikings vs. 2007 Patriots
5:15 Moss 1st TD
17:48 Carter TD
26:26 Moss 2nd TD
1:35:44 Hoard’s 1st TD
1:52:37 Moss 3rd TD
2:10:10 Hoard’s 2nd TD
