How I Met Your Mother scenes that foreshadow and/or justify the ending (part 5 of 5)

  • One of the main criticisms of the How I Met Your Mother finale is that the writers threw away nine years of character development and great storytelling for an ending that might have made sense in Season 1, but did not account for the way the characters and story had evolved over the course of nine seasons.
This scene compilation attempts to dispel that myth by showing that the ending was on the minds of the writers throughout the series, particularly in the last three seasons. I have also included a few misunderstood scenes (such as the letting go scene in “Sunrise”) that many feel contradicted the ending to show that, in reality, these scenes are actually consistent with the ending.

From a storytelling perspective, the ending of HIMYM made perfect sense.
The only big problem with it, imo, is timing.
The big twist gets revealed near minutes after learning what happened in the end with the mother.
They tried to compress 6 years of time passing in a couple of seconds (or in just one phrase), and that's not enough for an audience to emotionally move on from the previous revelation.

    • @bendowson3124
      @bendowson3124  5 лет назад +404

keratos I agree, that is the biggest problem with the finale. But I still love the ending regardless. I just wish they had done more flash forwards throughout Season 9. For example if they had had a flash forward episode early in Season 9 that told the story of Barney and Robin's divorce then we would have been more prepared for all the other twists.

The ending doesn't make sense at all. At no point in their ridiculous on again, off again relationship did they ever seem like a couple that could go the distance or were actually suited for each other and now we are meant to believe that they have dramatically changed personalities and their priorities and will live happily ever after? Give me a break!

      Perfect sense? PERFECT SENSE?
You're saying, that a girl he finally found dies at such a young age, then his friend divorces the girl he developed with so much, just for the sake of a silly plot that Ted and Robin should end up together. How is that perfect sense? It's stupid

    • @abdosaleh3113
      @abdosaleh3113 5 лет назад +45

keratos I kinda agree. But the problem wasn't the timing but the perspective and how they showed it. I mean spending all this time at the wedding giving hints about it and revealing the groom then the bride then spending most of the final season on it and that scene when Ted let go of robbin.
They should have worked on setting the ending but they wasted the final season because the series is called how I met your mother

The ending is not that big of a problem. It perfectly fits the idea of the show. The problem is the amount of time Tracy actually gets in the show. She gets such little screentime and is killed of so INCREDIBLY easy for someone the entire show is based upon.

I was never mad at the ending i was mad that two seasons were built around Robin and Barney and by the end they had split. Why drag out a wedding for one season to just end it. It reminded me of when Ted was left at the altar by Stella. Whole season no pay off, same here, we go through the motions but then there over and we never find out why they divorce. The little screen time with Tracy just makes her seem like she existed to give Ted children, and fill a space in Teds life till Robin was ready to settle down.

@A N G I E It's fine that's your opinion but how does Ted being super in love and distraught about Tracy dying make it seem like she's just another fling. It took Ted 6 years to even consider getting back with Robin, even telling this whole story about how he met their mother, how they had a perfect marriage until her passing and then asking their permission to be with Robin again. It's very tragic but beautiful in my eyes.

I guess I would too! The ending probably felt rushed, because Tracy's time with Ted felt too short to him and they made us feel the same way (as someone said earlier, not my original thought). But having to see Ted and Tracy's relationship (before the kids maybe ? Before Ted's life is just the way he planned it to be) in maybe like a film, or an episode or two could be nice. @@cacciatore_5320 I think that her short time on the show was for one more reason. Whenever her character appeared, she was portrayed as someone who is hard not to like. And because her screen time was short, there wasn't that much time to show her bad side, which means it was less likely for viewers to develop dislike or hate towards her (contrary to every other important character in the show, maybe except Penny and Luke), which in turn made people be (most likely) upset or sad that she died, which means that this part of the ending should've safely made people feel what screenwriters wanted them to feel.

Everyone can try to justify the ending as much as they want but the fact remains that the part with the kids telling him to go after Robin was filmed during season 2-3 because the kids were growing up and they knew the series would go on for a long time. At that point ted-robin were at all time high, made for each other, conquer all the hurdles type of ship. Hell I'll even take the liberty of saying even in season 4 and 5 that ending would've made sense. But the show lasted for many more seasons. The characters went through so much and there were major character development especially in the ted-robin-barney trio. For fucks sake there was a whole season dedicated to Barney and Robin's wedding.
No matter how much people try to justify it, the fact remains that Ted and Robin as endgame was a mistake. The choice was perfect for when it was made but it aged badly.

They should have done the last season completely different if this was the ending they wanted. Have the wedding be a 2 parter. Then have a couple regular episodes where we see Ted dating Tracy, Lily and Marshall in Rome and Barney and Robin newly married. Have Robin start travelling for work, show their marriage fall apart. Show Marshall, Lily and Marvin's life in Italy. Make us care more about Tracy. The series is based around her and they killed her off in such a bad way. Skip ahead to when Lily and Marshall return to NY. Ted and Tracy get engaged. Have an episode or 2 about the divorce. Tracy gets pregnant. Have an episode about Barney's perfect* month, then make the next episode have him find out he got 31 pregnant. Tracy gives birth to Penny, have an episode or 2 there. More time jumps between episodes, Tracy pregnant again, Judge Fudge, etc. Then have Tracy tell Ted about her illness. Couple episode showing them coping, and have her die at the end of that episode. This would be like Ep 17, so still room to show Marshall becoming Supreme Fudge. In the finale, Ted gets with Robin.
Not the best, but better than what we got.

Thats why they never worked out and they always tried to date but always broke up. In the end Ted finally had a family and got married but he lost his wife...but he got what he always wanted that he couldnt with Robin. Robin became successful with her job and did get married but decided her job was more important at the time so her marriage timing didnt work. She realized she always loved Ted but again they wanted different things and by the time she probably wouldve given another chance with Ted, he was already married with kids. After they were both older and got what they wanted and lived there goals they realized they didnt have anything holding them back from each other, they lived what they had wanted and now they could date and not have those road blocks they had before. I was super mad at the ending because i was like Robin doesnt deserve Ted!! But if you look at it from when they're waaaay older(like the ending) they actually FINALLY work well. The reason that I didn't like it is because I was never really rooting for them to be together in the first place, at least not after the first season. One of the reasons for this, in my opinion, is they just didn't have really good on screen chemistry (see Jim and Pam from The Office or Alicia and Will from The Good Wife). The standard "happily ever after" ending may not have been the most creative or daring, but entertainment is, after all, an escape from reality so in this case the standard ending would have been the most appropriate and enjoyable. However, as someone who never saw the show during its initial run and watched the entire series for the first time over about a month, the ending made a lot of sense to me.
I think the main reason it was so poorly received was because everyone was misled by the title and the pilot episode and just assumed that the mother would be the one Ted ended up with; and so the entire series was viewed through that lens and all the hints and clues of the series' true ending were misinterpreted or just went over their heads.

I think the ending was actually genius and I really liked it.
It sheds the entire 9 seasons in a totally different light. They finally make sense.
The critique that Tracy didn't have enough screen time is totally stupid, in my opinion. This critique WOULD have been valid if Tracy and Ted ended up being together for the rest of their lives. It would have been valid if the show was about Tracy. But the show (despite the title) IS NOT about Tracy and that's the whole irony and ingenuity about it.
During the show, I was asking myself all the time: When does the mother finally appear and it got weirder and weirder that she had so little screen time given that she is in the title of the show. And the ending finally resolved that: The story wasn't about the mother, she was just a side character. The story was about Robin, instead.
And that's where I also disagree with Ben Dowson (still a great video though and I agree with the other points): I think Ted is already over Tracy before he begins telling the story and just doesn't want to admit it to his children. By telling this story, which is mostly about Robin, he tries to convey them that he loves her, without ever having to admit it, because the ostensible purpose still is "How I met your mother". And by that he tricked he also tricked the viewers, because I think that the majority of viewers believed that the show was indeed about Tracy. Robin was ruled out from the beginning on when he called her "Aunt Robin".
No one expected the case that he could ask her out after that future situation. Basically, the show consists of one future situation (where Ted tells the story) and one main timeline which is all prior to that situation (the story itself). By calling her "Aunt Robin" Ted ruled out that she could ever become his wife and because we all believed that the whole series is just a story about the past, it seemed 100% safe that Robin and Ted will not end up together. The ingenuity of the ending is that they get around this issue by creating a new timeline starting from the future situation where he can actually ask Robin out. This new timeline has never been part of the series before and it is a great twist for a great finale.
The amount of foreshadows were precisely enough so that they justify the ending, but still don't make it obvious at all, so that it still comes off as a surprise. The timing had to be that fast paced in the end, because otherwise the surprise effect of the ending wouldn't have worked. If they had built it up more slowly too many people would have assumed it already. Moreover, the very fast pacing in the last two episodes really makes sense, if you consider, that it is Ted telling a story and that you can easily gloss over irrelevant parts of a story.
And why was the wedding of Barney and Robin so important to Ted that he covered it in such a high detail, i.e. that they had to devote an entire season to it? (A very common critique.) I think that's another misunderstanding of many people: The wedding played a crucial role in Ted's story, because it proved in many situations that there's something off between Barney and Robin and that Ted and Robin are actually destined to be together. In particular, it really substantiates that Ted isn't over Robin at all and it must been a very hard time for Ted seeing how she gets married to another guy, who happens to be one of his best friends. This obviously justifies how he covers that in a very high detail.
Another theory of mine (but you can disagree with that): Tracy actually never was the love of his life. She just was a distraction from Robin. Ted had such a hard time getting over Robin, that he even considered moving to another town, even though he loves NYC. He loved Tracy enough so that he could stay in NYC with his friends despite Robin being married Barney. And he certainly loved Tracy a lot. But Robin was always the number one.
Now, you could argue that this contradicts basically the whole series and that the were many situations where he (or, as in the scene in the video, Lily) claimed that Tracy is the love of his life. However, the whole series was just a story told by Ted and he had to be very cautious not to "offend" his children, by saying that he always loved another girl more than their mother.
I think if we put it that way, the series would be even more genius, because that would carry an important life lesson: If we're honest, life isn't always a fairy tale. Sometimes you love a girl, but she doesn't like you back, and, in reality, many people settle with someone while having been in love with someone else, who they would have preferred. Ted was always chasing for "the one" and at some point he had to realise that it would never work out, because Robin was "the one" and she happened to marry another guy. Thus, he had to settle with another girl who he still liked a lot, but she isn't "the one". (Still he would tell in the story that she is "the one", because it would be dangerous to tell his children that their mother was never the love of his life.) But by conveying in a more (or less) subtle way that he actually always loved Robin, Ted hopes that they understand it and are ok with their mother not being "the one" after having died.
And in the end it all worked. I think that's a very great ending and a happy ending too. If you've read this far, thank you and please comment your opinion if you've read it, because I'd like to hear if anyone ever read this far :)

I agree with you in many ways but i just can’t agree with you on something. We all know ted loved robin for years and she was always his true love, but we also know for certain that ted would never marry anyone unless she is “the one” ,so I don’t think ted would have ever married tracy if he didn’t love her, truly. I think ted got over robin for real but as any human there were always remains of his love for robin, but they got burried and he loved all over again. with the same way but when years passed and tracy died and he used to meet robin at regular bases between 2020 and 2030 his love begun to show again so he decided to tell his kids the story of how he met thier mother and to show them that at this time he loved robin againn.

This could be in reference to Robin or Victoria but after the scene plays out we finally see where Ted meets the one - Tracy. If Tracy wasn't the one they wouldn't have put that scene directly after Klaus telling Ted about his one.

Finally someone who thinks about the show the same way I do. From 2030 Ted storytelling, it all makes sense. I disagree that Tracy was just a distraction tho. He truly loved her, but at the point he's telling the story, she's been dead for 6 years, while he sees Robin from time to time, and all the feelings for her resurface.
E: also, for the sake of the show (I think it applies irl too, you can disagree) it was established that someone can love two People (Stella and Tony, Ted) and that when you love somebody, it doesn't matter if they're "the one" (He chased a perfect match who told him if you love somebody, it doesn't matter, and then later he didn't go on a date with almost perfect match, because he loved Robin). I think ted never truly lost the love for Robin, but he absolutely truly loved Tracy. Ultimately, what I take from this show is
that there isn't really "the one", only the people you truly and honestly love.

I agree that the execution of the ending could have been a lot better. I think trying to tell the story of everything that happened after 2013 in one two-part episode was a mistake. If I was to remake the series I would include more flashforwards throughout Season 9 that focus on Barney and Robin's story: the breakdown of their marriage, Barney going back to his old ways, Robin drifting further away from the group, etc. Then the finale could be more focussed on Ted and Tracy's story leading up to Tracy's death, followed by the meeting on the train platform and then Ted and Robin getting back together. They could even have a couple of scenes that show Robin bonding with Ted and his kids after Tracy's death that hint at what Ted and Robin's relationship could look like after they get back together.

The clip where Barney asks them to accept him as himself really debunks the people who wanted him just to settle down with Robin & be satisfied. (Of course, people assume the only way to have character development is ending in a monogamous romantic relationship.) By the wording, you can tell his daughter was the love of his life. Niel Patrick Harris explained it very well here: ruclips.net/video/eO2x4ASDo8g/видео.html The story would really be impossible to justify is ending a series, where the narrator pined after one girl (Robin), with a wedding to someone else who first appears almost a decade into that story. This story is about the ups & downs of Ted's romantic journey & the consistent figure is Robin. The problem with Ted & Robin was never their deep affection for each other. It was the different paths they were on in life. In the end, their paths finally converge and the timing is perfect. That is what the Blue trombone represents. Ted is able to have the life he always wanted, a wife who loves him & whom he loves, and his kids. Robin has a successful career and as always very cute dogs. Tracy wasn't just written off. Ted had two loves of his life. Sometimes, that's how real life works. If you watch the whole show through, you'll see it was obvious that the story couldn't have ended with someone Ted meets right before the show is over, and they can't introduce the mother earlier because it would answer the question & end the show. The show was about Ted's journey as a young man who wanted so badly to have love in his life & the ups and downs that entails. His daughter even said at the end, the entire story really revolved around his undying love for Robyn, even her wedding to Barney was really about him sacrificing to make her happy by giving Barney the necklace. Just as Robin is learning to make room for people close to her, Ted learns that no romantic gesture will make something fit when it just isn't right. In the end, it finally is right for Ted & Robyn. Even Lily's toast after Ted's wedding about his journey finding love not them as a couple, that was the story. The ending fit the show, not the show's title. That's how it should be.

I do believe the show's creators thought they'd be renewed for a 10th season. But then, halfway through S09 they realised it was not going to happen. That's the only reason for that rushed, underexplanatory finale.
I used to hate the ending and I thought I hated it because of the storyline itself but, in fact, I've noticed that I hate it because the show made me believe in Robin and Barney for A WHOLE EFFING SEASON. So, when the finale hits you in the face on the first 15 minutes like "nope, they divorced", you feel betrayed somehow.
But then I realised that if we had a tenth season with all the finale happenings in detail, the plot would be okay, we would have more of Tracy, we would learn about her illness, there would be time for mourning and there would be time for Robin to find her way back to Ted's life.

I think HIMYM depicted all types of relationships that can happen in life. And how a lot of relationships fail because of these aspects.
A couple that will sacrifice everything to each other because of how much they love each other (obviously with its up and downs too, but always ending up with sacrifices for that love), a success story.
Good chemistry but personal ambitions, careers (Robin and Ted)
Good chemistry but timing is wrong, Ted ready to settle down, Robin wants a career
Possible relationships but you cling to the past (Ted many times chose to pursue Robin even though he had chances with other woman)
Careers conflicts (Ted and Zoey, Robin and Don)
    Family goals (Robin and Kevin)
    Trust (Barney and Quinn)
    Commitment (Barney and Robin)
Knowledge (Ted and Stella, when you rush into a marriage for the sake of tying the knot, it ends in catastrophe)
    No Chemistry (Tracy and Louis)
Parents (Was one of the biggest tests to Lily and Marshall and could've broken their relationship)
    And the worst: Unfortunate events
In life even if you could find that jackpot, the time is too short due to unforeseeable events.

    • @Musicienne-DAB1995
      @Musicienne-DAB1995 4 года назад +6

They didn't hype Barney and Robin, though. Remember the way they broke up the first time, fighting, comfort eating, and getting horrendously fat? Remember when Robin cheated on Kevin, but refused to get back with Barney? Remember when Robin almost abandoned her wedding to run away with Ted? Remember when Barney got angry because Ted still had feelings for Robin? Remember all the times Barney denigrated marriage and lied to Robin to protect his old lifestyle, despite claiming to be ready for commitment? The screenwriters were showing us the reason these two, while appearing similar on the surface, could not last in the long term.

But really THANK YOU THANK YOU for this! I've tried explaining so many times and defending my love for the ending. As well as attempt to express just HOW MUCH depth was written in that the writers didnt get credit for.
I will agree with some whose only problem was the distribution of timing for season 9. It was all over the place just for a span of a few days and then a few years apart. It could've been done differently. One random observation that isn't anything major: note all the dogs Robin had. In the first season we knew that each dog was from a relationship, so we can probably assume that she's had some failed relationships occupy her time.
Anyway thanks again for really extracting and breaking down what I've failed to do ✌🏽

This was a great analysis! And I actually buy that this is what the writers actually went for. However, it was really poorly done. The fact that this entire change with everything happened in 40 minutes. We have had a whole season seing Tracy and Ted bonding. Barney and Robin bonding. Lily and Marshall bonding even more. We saw Ted let go of Robin (I know you said that it wasn’t how it was meant to be interpreted but it is really really hard not to see it like that, especially when you don’t have the full picture). And all of us just waited for the ”happily ever after” ending we thought we were gonna get. And then they throw this massive curveball which didn’t make us feel like ”whoa didn’t see that coming” more like ”wait what? So what was the point of it all?” The ending does make sense if you think about it all like you have here, but the problem is that if you dont see thing the way you do here, which most people do not, the ending feels like such a betrayal. Which is why I felt really angry at the ending.

For everybody who still hates the final episode of the series, or still don't get why Ted endend up with Robin i always tell: Remember the perspective.
Ted tells the story about how he met Tracy to his kids, and YOU are like someone else in the room listening to the stories.
Ted only tells the kids things THAT THEY DON'T KNOW.
All the years he lived with Tracy are stories that the kids probably heard over and over again. (and they lived a big part of it too)
But one day he sat with them and started to tell the path that lead to the life they already know. (and there is a deleted scene where his daughter asks him how he met her mother)
So yeah, there is A LOT that we wanted to know about Tracy but we'll never know, cause the kids already know it. And Ted obviously will not tell it all again.
    That's the point.
During the years Ted and Robin doesn't made sense cause HE WANTS KIDS, AND SHE WANT A CARREER, remember? So then, almost 20 years later he already lived the life he dreamt about, the kids, the perfect girl that fits everything that he ever wanted, and Robin tried to live with Barney (the perfect guy for her) but it doesn't work, so she focused on her job and lived everything that she wanted too. But over the years she realized that she still had feelings for Ted.
So why shouldnt they be together? It's perfect, cmon.
For everybody that still don't get it, life IS like this. Things happen.
The last season show us that all the gang loves Tracy too, everybody has a story with her. And this is never happened with a girl that Ted dated. So she IS pretty important to the story, even if she barely shows up in the season. Remember, the show is called "HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER", not "HOW I LIVED 11 YEARS WITH YOUR MOTHER".
For everybody that still hates the ending. After the last episode try to watch "The Time Travelers" (8x20) THAT IS THE REAL LAST EPISODE. That's the one who show us that Tracy is gonna die, show us that Ted would do ANYTHING to had even a little moment more with her. That final sequence is the real deal. It show us that life is not a farytail, that a lot of crazy things happen and all we should do is make our best and hope everything be okay.
This is what make HIMYM different of any other sitcom around, it is not only some "funny show", there is a lot of reality there, and reality sometimes hurts, but the end still can be amazing.

Like he’s really just using this story as an excuse to lead up to his main goal which is gaining approval from his kids to pursue the woman he’s been pining after the entire time he was married to Tracy.

    • @bendowson3124

First of all, I haven't seen the Game of Thrones ending and I'm pretty sure this series was made before Game of Thrones Season 8 was released.
Secondly, I agree that foreshadowing is not enough to justify an ending. That's why I said "foreshadow and/or justify" in the title. Some of the scenes in this series are primarily foreshadowing (e.g. Marshall and Lily's long term bet) and these scenes alone do not justify the ending. However, other scenes have been included to show that the development of the characters actually is consistent with the ending. Obviously, I couldn't talk about the whole series in a video series like this: that's a whole other video. However, the scenes I have extracted are all consistent with the overall narrative and character development.
