god this speedrun is just MATH on MATH good lord. how hard is the rng manipulation for getting the starter? that seems like the most precise and important part of the run
The starter manip is quite difficult. First you have to choose the Squirtle you are going for. The game runs at 60 fps and a new Squirtle exists every frame. Then you have to track NPC movement because this alters the RNG. Then, when selecting Squirtle you have to hit a 1/60 frame which is 16,67 milliseconds.
Watching this run made me realize the Giovanni fight in Rocket Hideout is basically the halfway point of the whole game. Makes sense but I never thought of it.
The fact that you can keep track of all of this info, in the course of a speedrun, while at full reaction aware, while butt on mashing. Is amazing. Dedication. Id ask you, seriously, how many times youve run this game but i have a feeling you, yourself, lost track a long time ago. I mean, this man (in his head) nails a frame perfect A input to get his right Squirtle. And resets on a bad miss. What? Are you doing 1-mississippis in your head? Jesus dude.
Actually I have learned that a lot of record holders think their run sucks. Werster literally broke a sonic the hedgehog record on the 1st try of a stream and said it was trash but it's the record so I'm doone
Recently bought a gba just to play my childhood again during lockdown and I forgot that when you get poised the screen started glitching I legit was about to send the console back on eBay because I thought it was broken lmaooooo
as upset as you were in sliph co and being crited by lorelei, I think it manipulated the run so you would be able to hit gengar and avoid being frozen by lorelei.
Lol well you're technically correct, because it does actually work that way! But it could've just stopped me from getting an even better set of outcomes! There's absolutely no way to know, which is definitely a good thing.
Thank you so much for sharing this video and explain us every step and every reasonements you took from your whole run. It is really insane to watch and as a casual speedrun viewer I never understood what are behind the scene. Now I understand better, and realize how much you @Gunnermaniac and Pokeguy are so much talented ! I would have two questions : - How many runs did you have to get this excellent RNG all along this run to Lorelei ? Because we watch on the timer that you can still save 1 minute that you lost on Lorelei RNG, so is that realizable from your opinion ? - Why Leafgreen version over Firered ? You did not explain that during your video. Congratulations, and what a show ! THIS IS E-SPORT ! :)
42:49 wow that’s insane. The odds of getting it on the first can you get, AND the 2nd one on the next can you check is a 1/210 chance. Or less than a 0.5% chance. EDIT: okay wow 1:50:23 is so much worse. Dude literally gets crit + paralysis in one turn, crit again the next turn, then ANOTHER crit the turn after that. 3 crits in a row plus a 30% paralysis is literally a 1/13,652 chance... or a 0.007% chance of that happening. Meaning you’re more likely to get a damn shiny Pokémon in 1 try then get those odds. My god what is that luck
So am i correct in understanding that to get the right squirtle in the begining you need to do a frame perfect input with no audio cue? Or is there a window of multiple frames that will produce the same squirtle? I find it difficult to understand how a frame perfect input would be done with little reference for when to do it.
Your stat knowledge is insane. How many hours of studying and gameplay did it take you from knowing relatively little about the game to a competitive speed run time ?

The gen 3 remakes are a lot more polished than the original generation, so the AI is a lot different. Also, Nidoking's moveset was changed. Furthermore, (don't think I said that to make me look smart, I just didn't want to say "also" a second time) the "Special" stat was switched to "Special defense" and "Special attack." Another reason is a lot of the moves used in the speedrun are harder to get in the remakes. Gen 1 Nidoking uses ice beam by giving the girl at the top of Celadon department store a drink (can't remember which one), and the same goes rock slide, and Surge gives shockwave instead of thunderbolt. The "X Accuracy" item was changed. In gen 1, it turned all moves to infinite accuracy, but in gen 2 and onwards, that was fixed, making horn drill less viable. Gunner or Bulbapedia could probably tell you more though. Edit: I hope you meant "slow for the speedrun" and not "why does he have a bad speed stat," because if it was about his stat, I just wasted my time.
