- Episode #3. Journey of 100 mile horse race. Today's endurance horseback riding and training took as to the beach and on the road in an effort to strengthen the strong relationship needed between rider and horse and to prepare the horses for the upcoming season. Miles 10 to 13 rode today for 2023.
Awesome scenery to ride in. So great to see the thought that goes into conditioning the horses and yourselves.
I've never used any tack other than the standard bridle, saddle & breast collar. Can you tell me about what Azim is wearing at the 4:45 mark? What it's called and what its purpose is?
Hi Melanie. He is wearing a running martingale. It is used to help provide a bit of extra leverage with horses like arabs who can become very high headed. They put their heads up and it can be like trying to ride a periscope. We don’t always ride with them. I have one on Kohl right now but will probably stop using it soon until the first competition. In high energy situations though, I will put it back on him. Maybe we will talk about them in a bit of detail over the summer. Long and short of it , they are just a tool that helps at times.
