I focus on the sound when I'm actually riding the horse. I can hear it perfectly! When the beats are spaced exactly the same, I know my horse is perfect! I'm going to force my husband to watch this video!!!!! I know his horse is "pacey". He says his is better. Maybe this will prove it to him. ;-) FANTASTIC video!!!!
OMG!! This is the best learning video I have ever seen! Kudos to you kiddo! I’m dyslexic, my husband has been trying to teach me the difference for years and I could NEVER grasp the concept. No matter how hard I tried to understand it, how many videos I watched, no matter how much I loved to ride and enjoyed it I couldn’t learn, mostly because I was always afraid of the harsh reprimand that made me give up and loose interest until I accidentally ran into your magnificent video. I could have used this years ago which would have saved me a lot of heartache and I wouldn’t have gone thru what I went thru. I was at the point of selling my horse altogether and hanging it up. Thank you so much for having the brains to come up with this great idea and color coding the legs, can’t wait to see the rest of them. I still have to watch it over again but mostly for reference and just cause it’s fantastic! Keep up the genius instructional videos and thanks again! Seriously, THANKS! A new avid follower! Can’t wait to surprise my husband!
Hey bro. I think your educated video is one of the most un rating on RUclips. You made so helpful job for all of us who love riding. Best regards from Greece
I have watched both videos over and over until I now understand the various gaits. So informative and so well done! Thank you Travis for sharing your knowledge.
Ive watched this video several times now. It has been so helpful and is fairly easy to understand. Wish we had More trainers like Travis. He must have spentmany hours putting this together and I for one appreciate his efforts to help us better understand. I wish he would had told us the breed of the horses he used.
Really impressive video. My background is mostly with horses that walk trot canter gallop jump (and 'fancy prance' in the dressage ring ;). Your level of horsemanship is awesome. New sub. For years I have studied breed backgrounds, especially American breeds. Most all of our modern horse breeds go back to pacing horses and gaited horses. The Irish Hobby is considered the foundation for most of our breeds in America, from Thoroughbreds to Walking horses and everything in between.
I'm impressed. Well explained, good representations of the differences. Also worth mentioning, the reason a true 4 beat gait is preferable is not just the landing pattern, but the lift pattern-- a horse who breaks up his pattern of foot lift AND foot fall is a more surefooted horse.
very helpful to the horse shopper in me! The one thing I was looking at was the difference in shoulder/hip angles on all you examples. Very interesting on how the horse's body functions and will help when I purchase my trail buddy. Thank you for your willingness to do such work.
Props to this Video! It's really great. So I have not a lot experience in the American way of riding gaited horses, my experience comes from the Icelandic horse and the way they are ridden. With the American gaited horses I saw a lot that I absolutely disliked. Now this is one of the first videos I really liked and where I would say I learned something. You can use it also on the Icelandic horse and the videos of the horses in comparison are amazing to learn the sound of a pacey horse. Will definitely watch more of your videos
I really like the way you present this and break it down, so that we can compare gaits easily. I wish the fox trotter people would do one like this with variations on fox trot.
This video helped me so much in learning how to recognize movement with gaited horses! I recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn about the gaited horse world!
Thank you thank you thank you! Just come from a 'fast racking' video, and the discussion got a bit heated, especially re breeds! Great presentation. Stay safe.
We have a little thing when we do the " tölt" If the horse is in the right place ,you can pronounce " black and Decker" "black and Decker" Nice to see a rider in a correct position over the horse, right size saddle, and smooth still hands.. The worst thing is to watch those trail riders on to small horses, non fitting, saddles, and they are sitting like a sack of potatoes and keeping their balance by holding to the reins.....And the horses are way to small for some of them. This was very educating thanks!! Old rider...
WOW Travis.... that is the best, most helpful description I've ever encountered.... so far. I've ridden many different 'feeling' horses and tried to work it out in my brain (& failed!) so far... =) I hear the word 'Gaited' refer to 'Rack', Single-footed, Dancing, Paso-finos, Ten.Walkers, and probably more. I'd love to know the technical difference. One 17 hand 'moroccan' paint had, what i was told was, a 'single-foot' gait that was like a rocking chair sideways. Never rode one like it since then. He also was the swiftest (in a group of 22) at a gallop, and the ugliest in the 'looks/conformation' department, but great fun! Spent many hours working on 'group' trail rides and was glad he was my assignment ! Don't know what a Fox Trot is either !!! By now my own years are 'racking' up pretty fast, and may not have enough time left to learn these important things, but then they won't much matter !!! Would LOVE to know =}
What a big help to learn the gaits!! I noticed that you sit back on your horses, or your upper body is behind the vertical. What is the benefit of sitting back when riding a gaited horse? Thx!
Hello ! I am from the Central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan. In our country, pacers are also very much appreciated, and here they also divided the pace of walking into groups, if I am interested I can share information, thanks for such very informative video lessons. I want to chat with you if possible. I want to show our horses, share my experience with you.
Love the detailed explanation! Videos were great! I have a Tennessee Walker who tends to do the swingy gait or what I have been told is also called the stepping pace. He is very smooth in this gait but tends to be on the lazy side so easy for him to do this and then proceed to the pace. We are working on this by working on balance, relaxation, and forward motion, not driving him into the bit. I have heard 2 opinions on the stepping pace: 1) it is fine, or 2) it is NOT fine as it is harder on the horse in the long run. Do you have an opinion on this? I visited your website and watching you ride is amazing! Thank you for all of your hard work. I live in Ohio, quarter horse country, and it is very difficult to find someone who knows gaited horses. Look forward to seeing more from you.
Trotting, racking, pacing, walking, canter, gallop, single, but the way I grew up if they ant racking you ant doing it right pacing is a no no but if a horse will trot fast the will rack fast a lot of people like pacers especially the fast Standardbreds but I’ve bought trotter Standardbreds that raced with buggies that would rack a hole in the ground but it’s all up to preference
When a horse is born, can you tell if it’s going to be gated or normal??…I would call a gaited horse very similar to watching a cat!!…a swingy gate is like a sulky racer…correct??
Ive got a pair of percheron/standardbreds, a 10 year old mare and a 3 year old gelding. Is it foolish to try and train them to gait? Both trot beautifully
Is there a way for me to send you a vid of my old guys gait? i'm new to gaited horses and honestly only recently started asking him to gait as he prefers to trot (and its a super nice trot). he is an older horse whose gait (dont know what it is but its not a trot and fits on the more pacey side of the chart) is not high action but is still there. ill try to post a link to it here ruclips.net/video/ibJSWodlmyo/видео.html

i really appreciate that you try to preserve their natural gaits instead of modifying them beyond recognition like other parts of the gaited showring
I’m sorry what
The shoes aren’t going to change that the horses are gaited

Just found your tutorial.
They are so good are explaining AND showing what you're talking about.
Such excellent teaching
Regards.
Bruce from Australia
Great instructional video. I know it took a lot of work editing to produce this level of detail. I learned a LOT from this. Thank you kindly! Be well!
Fantastic job of explaining each difference!!

Really excellent comparison. Well done.
Amazing amount of thought, time and effort put into this to illustrate, well done!

Amazing informative video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us in such a detailed way. You sure put some work on these videos. Respect!
Thank you. Very informative and I learned more about gaits watching this video than I ever knew. I could see subtle differences, this explains why.
Glad I found your videos. Very helpful and well done. Oh and I like your shirt. God Bless
Thank YOU for the detailed information on the GAIT as I am doing a study on the TWH. I felt like I was in your classroom.... EXCELLENT
This video helped me so much in learning how to recognize movement with gaited horses! I recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn about the gaited horse world!
Amazing lesson // incredibly didactic // the best I've ever attended to // Thank You !!!
Awesome video! I have been struggling to really see the difference between pacey and gait, and this did it for me!! Thank you!!
Me too! This was perfect!
Thank you thank you thank you!

Old rider...
Wonderful lesson, thank you, Travis!
Also if you can understand, the gaited horse sounds more even. The cadence of footfalls isn’t swung
Everything’s finally came into perspective.
Omg this is a life saver in training my horse I know now she is pacey that's why she wont hold a rack
WOW Travis.... that is the best, most helpful description I've ever encountered.... so far. I've

I got here from Imus's video called the gait spectrum. I bet if you watch that first, then come back to this one and watch it again it might help?
What a big help to learn the gaits!!
I noticed that you sit back on your horses, or your upper body is behind the vertical. What is the benefit of sitting back when riding a gaited horse? Thx!
Excellent videos Travis! Jack in CA (Buck - Tennessee Walker you trained for me). Nice job!
great video
Interesting. Hoping there are some strategies for correcting wrong gait.
Музыка эпично закончилась 😂

Love the stop motion shots, very helpful. Wondering what type of saddle you are using?
Awesome, glad they helped! The saddle brand is Tarpan Hill and the style is a Trooper.

Do Keg shoes improve the horse's gait? Or would they be the same barefoot?
I have just learn some much now ik what I really have
I love horses!
Interesting!
Do baited horses give a smoother ride ?
Very informative
Very helpful!
What hes calling pacey we in Mississippi call it slick pacing
Do you see any soring of horses? and if you do how do you handle it or do you approve of it?
I've got a Saddlebred/Percheron cross and he does ALL these gaits but he does it backwards. So frustrating.
Got a video of him? I'd like to see him gaiting backwards.
They both have broken paces

Oh man, I wish I could send my SSH to him for some racking work. I really want him to step up, but he is just lazy and pacey most of the time.
Rack on
