I am a sponge for home repair hacks, tips and tricks. I say this because I have no vinyl siding, I live in a Florida cinder block stucco home, but I still watched and enjoyed your video. Just replaced some aluminum fascia at two different peaks, after it was stolen by Hurricane Ian.

I have watched many of your videos. I'm a big DYIer so most times I know the tricks and procedures you are doing. Just watched this on the corner repair. I have repaired corners before the only differences I use is to cut the old and new corner/s I use an oscillating tool, lot quicker. I also when putting the two together I use adhesive on the inside of the new piece before installing. Not a lot (don't want a big mess) just enough to bond the two together. Thanks for you videos, enjoy watching them and learning a trick or two.
Do you have a video on repairing a piece of the vinyl siding? Admittedly, i haven’t looked yet and I’m sure some exist already, but your quality and practical explanations feel more reliable than other channels. I have a few projects I’ve been afraid to tackle because they require replacing some siding.
I've capped a few corners, but rather than modifying what's on the house I have been able to get a corner piece that is a ½" wider so I just cut off the nail flange from the new, put a bead of silicone inside the j hook and snap it over the top of the old corner.
This was fantastic! Thankfully I'm not in the market for this repair now, but I've saved this for future reference. Now if you can just help me get this one piece of siding to stop popping up. . .even bought that tool, but it only held for a month! LOL
Great video as always Scott! I love that you and your team always make videos that aren't always most common issues, or issues that I wouldn't even think of. Or in my case it's common, I just didn't know that there was a way to repair without redoing all the siding. I do have a question though...would it be better to Acuff the siding with something abrasive to have the paint adhere better or does it not matter with this type of vinyl/plastic? Great video again! I have a hole caused by tree trimmers in my beige siding...the horizontal pieces. It's about 1.5 feet off the ground, so I think I'll buy a white tube or white vent cover and glue over it like a fake vent. There are other white vent/tubes there from the furnace. Thanks again. Gonna help my elderly neighbor fix her corner piece that the landscaper chewed up with the weed wacker. She has a beautiful home and a pest control guy stuff some bright orange steel in there to seal the hole. It looks crazy so I’m going to use your method to help her out.

Nice job Scott! There’s just No end to your talent! Ive got a bad puncture in my horizontal siding piece, where part of a branch tore loose and went into the House. It’s basic white, so color match will not be as much concern as how i am going to cut that in? It’s quite a ways off the ground, so will be working off a 28 foot extension ladder. What prevents that repair from movement? I fell it could, due to gravity, perhaps slide down and out of place. Perhaps a couple of pop rivets at the top is a good idea?
I biffed the bottom 2 in of one of my corner pieces on my tool shed with the weed wacker. And I have been wondering for a while how I could just do a little quick patch to keep bugs out. And now I know. Cuz I'm not going to replace the whole thing I'm just going to cobble it on at the bottom and maybe put a little caulking to hold it in place.

One side of the house is too close to the ground and water has rotted the lower few inches allowing rodents etc. to get inside the crawlspace. The water has come from melting snow over time and the wood damage is only a few inches, not even the width of one piece of siding. Taking down the whole wall seems like a waste, but everyone says that's what needs to be done to fix it! What is your thoughts if you have the time. Thank you

I have a very odd siding question. I live 1 street away from a lake and notice that the siding seems to gather massive amounts of knats. I have tried pressure washing and many other things but, what I noticed is that it does not help. My theory is that due to the static nature of siding, once these little knats get close, they can't pull away. Any thoughts on this? I did start by saying this is an odd one :)

This is a great trick for a quick fix, but we've found that the trim has a tendency to slide down a little bit over time, creating a gap at the top that apparently is a great place for hornets looking for a place to nest. Any suggestions for how to adhere so it doesnt slide down? Can it be caulked at the top?
Nice-looking repair. Is the paint you used formulated to adhere to vinyl? Most paints don't. I would have used a bonding primer or chosen a paint that specifically says it can be used with vinyl.
Question…. My neighbor painted an end of his home which was horribly faded vinyl siding and stood out from the other 3 sides which still looked good. A couple months later the vinyl siding that he painted started to buckle, distort, and twist which looked just horrible. He did not paint the other 3 sides of the house as they did not sun fade. Question… what happened to the siding he painted and why did it distort.
If I only did part of the corner I would make sure the top piece overlapped the bottom piece and was on top to ensure water shed off the corner correctly.

Vinyl siding expands and contracts significantly due to temperature changes. That is why most vinyl siding (especially 30 years old) only came in very light and reflective colors to prevent heat buildup. So you will want to limit your paint colors to very light colors. Don’t paint a dark grey or blue that will absorb heat, expand, and pop your siding loose! Also clean siding well and use a paint that sticks well to vinyl. Your paint store should have recommendations, likely RUclips will too if you search for “repaint vinyl siding”.
I have a question for you, at the top of the corner of my siding there is that big opening and my roof does not have enough of an overhang to keep the rain out of the gap. What can I do to cover that gap?
Unless the vinyl you are painting is old and weathered, the paint will eventually lose its grip and flake off. You can scrub the new piece wit something like a Scotch Bright pad to remove some of the shine. There are also chemical treatments and special primers available to improve the chances of the paint sticking properly.

Some of my siding is stained from clay splashing up on it from rain. I took a piece in for color match. The problem is the new paint is super shiny so I have shiny spots. Should I just get paint that doesn't have a sheen to it. No one in the paint dept can figure out what I need.
Why not cut corner angle first and give first coat of paint. Silicone in a few spots up the sides and hook on.Then give second coat of paint when installed.

Just wanted to say thanks, This worked for me. I used an electric multitool instead of the utility knife. worked super fast.

you can do the color match at any paint store or depot store they all have the lazer color match tool for any paint project

Those OLFA knives are extremely good. I use an 18mm for all-purpose use; but you'd definitely want the 25mm for cutting up vinyl siding.

Do you add any kind of sealant around the new section of corner, to make sure that it remains weather-tight?
I did not but if you think there is a chance at the top you could use a bit of silicone to seal things up.

Can't you produce a picture showing the siding isn't vinyl where they will make the change?
You painted the flat side with the little roller, did you paint the edge and around the back with a brush first?

Looks like the new corner piece got damaged sometime during the install. Big crinkle spot right in the middle. 😢
unfortunately it came like that from the home improvement store. They had 3 pieces in that color and they all had the damage. 🙁
