The pipes are indeed a stage prop which you also will find in the film ‘Imaginaerum’. The stage is maybe simple because this is performed at Wacken, which is a festival where a lot of groups perform on rotation, using eight stages. Buenos Aires, Tampere and London are solely Nightwish performances with maybe a other group as pre program.

The level of talent and dedication in this band is awe inspiring. The result is a band that is incredibly tight. Every member of the band has an important part to play. The heart and soul of the band is the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen. He is not only an extremely proficient musician but the composer of most of the music that Nightwish performs and is often called the Metal Mozart. The more you listen to them, the more you will appreciate the band as a complete entity, with the single purpose of producing the best music that they possibly can. It really doesn't matter what song of theirs you listen to next. They're all different, and there isn't a bad song in the bunch.

The burning skull is the symbol of the festival "Wacken open air" I have tickets to go next year for the 4th time. The pipes are just a prop around the keyboards. The stage was a bit simple because it is a festival. Another band played before them. The greatest show on earth was a Nightwish concert in Tampere, so they had more time to put up the screens. Tuomas Holopainen only plays keys, writes almost all the music and lyrics. The guy, Troy Donockley, in The Greatest Show on Earth plays numerous wind and string instruments but plays on only a few at this concert. However this is still an incredible concert that introduced so many to Nightwish and Floor Jansen who was only in the band ten months and sings every song written for the two previous singers. Tarja Turunen ( 1996-2005 operatic) and Anette Olzon (2007-2012 pop) then Floor who took over mid tour with 48 hours to learn the setlist !!

That is just a stage prop for his keyboard setup. This is a big metal festival. Usually Nightwish has big back screen to atmosphere. It does make sense. This was a single for Nightwish in 2011.

To me, much of Nightwish's lyrics deal with the child-like self that we tend to lose over the years. No matter how hard we try we can't regain the innocence of childhood... tho it is fun to try.
Tuomas often refers to himself as "Dead Boy" or "the Dead Poet", noting the passage of these two states-of-mind: the 'death' of the wild, open-eyed youth/astounded at every new discovery and experience, and the boundless imagination that many of us lose as we gain 'responsibility and stature' as we age.
The Dead Poet reference is, to me, the Lover, The Creator-of-images and Sound, The fragile edge that we have as we create (easily broken, often subject to being broken down by the betrayal of those whose opinions matter most, etc... can I use "etc",.. maybe I should explain more?)
Anyway, when exploring a lost aspect of youth and exuberance, Nightwish taps this imagery over and over, and it works (for me).
I miss the creative part of being an engineer in the 80's/90's ... now I'm just a dentist in a rural area where people often get 'creative' with the drus and dangerous activities they mix together, but I digress.
I miss making a new thing out of just ideas and parts and bits of electrical knowledge.
But then again, there's is nothing like rebuilding a damaged smile.
    Anywho
Glad you gave us another reaction... refreshing !! Thank you again
    - - Blind Doc Jones, alleged Honorary Nightwish dentist, amp tech, and babbling idiot.

Woohoo!I just woke up and found this! I like to say that Storytime is my favourite Nightwish song - except for all the others! As you have been told, the organ looking pipes surrounding the keyboard are just a stage prop (where Tuomas hides his stash of red wine!) The flaming cow skull is the symbol of the Wacken Open Air festival, which for 90% of the year is a sleepy cow town in Northern Germany but transforms into one of Metal capitals of the world. Nightwish's concert there in 2013 was special, it was the first time they headlined at Wacken and also the first chance many of the attendees got to see Floor live as part of Nightwish (many were already familiar with her from her previous bands) (BTW I am loving your SOMA playthrough!)

This is one of two costumes she wore at this concert. The other one had a wee little malfunction making her a half beat late to the stage. It was fixed during Ghost Love Score. The malfunction was a zipper under her left arm. When I was at this concert, I couldn't see it. On these camera shots and on the DVD I can see it, but it's really minor. She changed outfits during the musical number and returned to the stage for "Bless the Child". Fun Fact: when I bought my tickets for WOA 2013 and NW, Anette Olzon was still the singer. Anette was fired in... October(?) 2012 and Floor was asked to finish the tour with NW. Her performances ramped up the crowd and we wanted her permanently. Both of these costumes were auctioned off I think.

I think the interpretation of this song is Floor is singing as the voice of tales. Think of video game plots, movies, novels, fairy tales, folk lore ect. all rolled into one. There's 80,000 people in that crowd. If you need to leave for whatever reason, like passing out, the best way to go is up and to the front where the security and staff will help you land safely.
Wacken is a festival with many other performers on the same stage so the stage setup isn't quite as customized as it would be on a solo concert where they just perform on their own.
"I am the story, I am the tale that reads you real." That is the essence of this song IMO. The perspective of it. The song kinda taps into that wonderful sense of nostalgia and childlike wonder.

From start to finish a gaming video takes me about 8 hours until upload, whereas reactions take me about 3 hours. HOWEVER to be fair, the reaction videos include already high quality content (and aren’t monetizable, unfortunately, but very fairly), whereas my gaming videos rely a 100% on me as an entertainer to make the video enjoyable. Also, the gaming niche is *extremely* oversaturated, bc let’s be fair, we all like gaming. 😂 I love creating gaming content too much to ever turn into a 100% reaction channel, but it’s definitely refreshing to have some videos do well for a change! 🤗

  • @Mischnikvideos

The song is from the album / film music Imaginaerum and introduces the main character. Film music means that there is a Nightwish film of the same name. The tinkling is a music box on the main character's piano and you will hear it again. The main character mostly only sees himself as a child in a dream world. This world is dying because the main character is dying. When he is halfway clear-headed, he tries to rebuild his relationship with his daughter.
The opera singing is not in the original because the singer Anette Olzon (singer number 2) could not sing classical music. Only the background choir can be heard there. Tarja Turunen (singer number 1) has extensive classical training and has left her mark on Nightwish:
NIGHTWISH - The Phantom Of The Opera (OFFICIAL LIVE)
The stage design is the same as Greatest Show. There is a large display and three smaller ones, with some pyrotechnics around the band. That hasn't changed since that tour until today. Only the content of the displays changes.

And then if you want a little bit harder but epic sound listen to Epica and the song Consined to Oblivion live from the Zenit. I think yu also love it.

The perspective in which it is written: The narrator (Floor in this case) is not a corporeal person but is the spirit, the child of the past that lives on within every man's (or woman's) heart. In other words childhood innocence which slowly dies as we become adults, yet the spirit of it lives on. This theme of childhood innocence lost pervades many of Tuomas' lyrics.

The organ pipes at Tuomas keyboard is decor, but it looks cool right..
The empthy crib of peter pan, is for everyone to crawl in, and start making stories for the world, those who made the stories is the memory that we hold dear, the song is basicly saying to go use your imagination, and tell stories, yes use your fantasy.. its also a ode to those who did so, the great poets, writers, and storytellers of the world....

It used to be more than a decor. They used it for pyro as well and fire came out of those pipes. You probably knew that, but wanted to mention it. In Wacken it was a decor/stand/homage to Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (Sibelius monument in Helsinki in Sibelius park). I don't what exactly Tuomas has thought though. Might be other things as well.

The Greatest Show On Earth was a Nightwish Concert, while this was a Festival.
So the first has their fully own designed stage that suits the concert.
Floor Jansen is one of, if not, the greatest Singer ever come from the Netherlands, yet is is mind blowing that she was hardly known here, in her own country untill Beste Zangers.
Most Dutch people thinking of Dutch Symphonic Metal, do not know anything beyond Within Temptation, which is extremely dissapointing since Dutch Female Vocalists are world famous elsewhere. You want to dive into a bit more? I would highly recommend Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show - Epica is another dutch band with an amazing vocalist (Simone Simons) and this show features them with a full orchestra and Choir and Floor as a Guest for this song. It is a bit heavier though, than Nightwish.

    Hi there fififemke.
NW army Finnish Jaeger battalion reporting to duty. All I have to say is that longest songs by them are Greatest show on Earth (21.30 minutes), Poet and the Pendulum (14minutes and chance). Now before you do the Poet song which is from Wembley, London 2015, you should do some research on what made Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist, song writer, composer of the band) make this song. Also Yours is an empty hope is a great example how low growls are done by female. Lol. Also songs like Ever Dream, Song of myself, Romanticide ,and many more you hear Marco Hietala sing with Floor. Marcos the bass player. And Troy Donockley is the multi instrumentalist. He mainly plays the Irish bag pipes called Uillean pipes or pipes of the elbow. Flutes, guitar's and he also sings some songs.like Carpenter. It's from Buenos Aires in case you're interested.

The pipes aren't an instrument, they're just a stage prop, i.e., a keyboard stand. He has his Korg synthesizer boards back there. The pipes are modelled after a famous sculpture at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. The flaming bull's head is the corporate logo of the Wacken (Vokken) Festival and have nothing to do with Nightwish. The fans are just crowd surfing across the mosh pit. When they get to the front, the security guys catch them so they don't fall and get injured. By the way, we've got two examples now to measure from, and the jury is out: Your delivery style and peppering of humor and personality are simply perfect. Don't change a thing, IMHO.

The "motorcycle on crack" is really just 3 keyboards behind a fancy frame of pipes similar to an organ. The pipes are decorative. Tuomas plays the keyboard / Synth. He also writes all the music. The pipes are played by Troy which is another guy. Troy does play everything haha. Guitar, flute, low whistle... they once asked "which instrument do you play?" and he said "Yes" (joking, but not joking).
The lyrics, in my interpretation, talk about the power of stories and imagination. Imagination gives us power to sit by a fire and imagine the universe. Storytelling allows us to share what we imagined with every other human. All the good things about life can be shared through stories, if only we dare to imagine, and keep it alive. Imagination motivates us, gives us goals, makes us wonder if things could be different, then inspire others and do it. The core of all life is a limitless chest of tales. Without our tales, we have no life, we can't imagine a better world, so we can't create it. We can't wonder about things, so we can't discover anything new.

Regarding Floor’s popularity, I’ll touch upon it shortly here: The Netherlands is in my opinion not very open to rock or metal on conventional radio. We have 1 mainstream radio channel (I know of) that caters to alternative music/rock that’s called 3FM that might play their music. I don’t think I’ve ever heard their music on the radio tho. I was personally not familiar with Floor, even tho both my dad and stepdad are both into rock music. Floor and Nightwish are probably well known in non-mainstream media and people who actively look for new music like this, but they wouldn’t be any type of band to chart on mainstream media. Some rock bands that would be found are: The Killers, Muse, 30 Seconds To Mars, Greenday, Editors.
I hope this helped answer your question!

The "organ" is fake, only for decoration. But the synthesizer is quite capable. Tuomas plays a lot of instruments on them. However they also use orchestral background tape, which is extremely difficult to keep synchronised with in a live performance. That requires perfection, especially from the drummer.

Great reaction! This song is from their Imaginaerium album, a concept album based on an old composer on his death bed relieving the memories of his life. One of Tuomas's favorite topics or themes in his music is lost innocence. As a poet and artist Tuomas values the sense of wonder and imagination that innocent children have. In Storytime the composer is remembering the joy he got from childhood tales, thus the references to Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland (Tuomas often uses literary references in his lyrics and as inspiration for songs). It is through these childhood stories that we discover ourselves and who we are (I am the story that will read you real).
Song is inspired by a popular British Christmas movie The Snowman. Storytime" was born when Tuomas wondered why no-one had made a remake of the film, and pondered on what his version of the score to the scene in which "Walking in the Air" plays would sound like. Tuomas "How would it feel to take a midnight flight with a snowman through the most wondrous landscapes, like in the classic animated Yuletide film? The meaning of our very existence is created though stories, tales and imagination. They are at the very core of humanity." Walking on the Air is a very popular Christmas song in the UK and Finland and Nightwish did a beautiful cover of it with their first singer Tarja that is worth reacting to.

None of the songs from the Wacken 2013 show were written for Floor and she had significantly reworked the vocals on at least two. On Storytime, the chorus she sings with her full classical technique was not sung by Anette Olzon but by backing vocalists. On Ghost Love Score the extended vocal finale is all Floor. There are live performances of Ghost Love Score with all three Nightwish lead singers, Tarja the Ice Queen, Anette the Elf and Floor. It's a case of a great song sounding great for any performer.

Nightwish Shadow Unit from Estonia reporting in ! 6'1'' Dutch Valkyrie Goddess spotted !
And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!!
Her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
She is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Awesome tune , although it is kind of a pop/rockish sound (originally sung by Anette, the second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!! Including this "Operatic" part, what was originally done by children's choir because vocal limitations on their second singer (Great singer also, I might add), but Floor has none of that "Limit".
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.
We hope, that there is more coming.
    NWSU/FloorFan/Epican/Ayreonaut/TWA/PauFan 🤘😎🤘.

But you're right - Nightwish makes for the crowd a full experience by everything possible including the stage equipment, large stage scren, stage lights or pyrotechnics... And there is very imprtant thing - the band members are perfectly able to communicate with the audience and do what the people need in the right moment for their greatest experience.
