  • Neil Bockoven is an award-winning geologist, journalist and the author of the historical fiction “Moctu” series -- Moctu and the Mammoth People and The People Eaters (July 2022) - as well as a children’s science book titled When We Met Neanderthals.
Paleo Human Mysteries is a four-part documentary series (produced and hosted by Neil) that examines some of the greatest mysteries surrounding our early ancestors. Did we interbreed with Neanderthals and other archaic human species? And why did we survive, while they did not? Based on Neil’s exhaustive research, the series delves deep into the Paleolithic era and the interactions of paleo humans and explores the most recent discoveries being made through archaeology and genetics.
Episode 4 is titled "The Name Game" for good reason. In it, Neil explains where the name Neanderthal originated and the startling resistance of many leading scientists in the 19th Century to even consider the possibility that other human species inhabited the earth with us. Even after the archaeological evidence was undeniable, some scientists proposed naming the new species "Homo stupidus," showing the arrogance of Homo sapiens. The whole debate culminated in one of the most unusual dual challenges in history - the choice of weapons being sausages!
In an addendum to the series, Neil also discusses his books - Moctu and the Mammoth People and The People Eaters - and scientific research that underlies them. And he talks about his popular children's book - When We Met Neanderthals - which also is available everywhere books are sold.
Episode One - "You Sexy Beast,"- aired on July 12, 2022. Episode Two - "Killer" Instinct" - launched on July 29, 2022. Episode Three - "Ancient Footprints" - premiered on August 19, 2022. The last episode of the series - "The Name Game" - was released on Oct 3, 2022.

Woke up this morning. Brewed coffee then watched these videos and it feels like I’ve just finished a vacation! Haha.
Wish I could go back to watch this series again with the same mindless curiosity !
Also I like how you hold you’re confidence on the ground of you're knowledge! I hope we can bring that back! For everyone

The history of the discovery of Neanderthals was fascinating stuff as usual, but the anecdote about the sausage duel made me laugh out loud.

I made a comment on the first video of this series wondering what The Earth’s Children series would be like with up to date research on Neanderthals, and I think I’m about to find out as soon as I get ahold of one of your books! I loved those Geico commercials. They were hilarious. How funny about the sausage duel that almost was, and Neanderthal translating to “new people”. How unintentionally ironic, lol. Take care.

Mr. Bockoven, have you written anything about the relationship of humans and canines?
I personally believe the coevolution theory has a lot going for it, and in a roundabout way the beginnings of the relationship between man and our best friend has been my reason for delving into how the First Artists worked.
Id be interested in any directions you could point toward that would help me learn more about how our early relationship with canines may have come about.
I am one who believes canines may have helped us to become the surviving species.
    I find the subject fascinating.

The fossil record shows that on average, Neanderthals were shorter than us. They were more massively built and stronger.
