When I first started making reborn dolls in 2000, actually I’ve been making dolls since before that, it was just for people who love lifelike babies. They were the beginning of the truly lifelike looking and feeling dolls. I never had anyone approach me because they had a miscarriage until several years later.

I had an Aunt that collected dolls, I don’t even know the earliest year of her oldest doll. I remember as a child going in her “doll room” and just staring at them in awe. She had hundreds. I have some special dolls that because my grandmother passed them to me, have that special connection. Has nothing to do with miscarriages. Now, I’m learning to create/paint kits myself, do the art.

I have always had dolls. I collect many types of dolls. I love baby fashion. Especially vintage baby fashion. I love babies. I have two kids and four grandkids. My niece had one of the original reborns in the 80s. I wanted one then but my mom couldn't afford one. So my husband bought me one. He is a pretty good husband. I love my dolls and stuffies. I have some vintage and antique dolls. My first antique porcelain doll is an 1880s doll named Martha. My first reborn is a Loulou that I got from Amazon. She is beautiful. I also have care bears, build a bears, cabbage patch kids, two antique teddy bears, pokemon, and of course holiday stuffies. I use the holiday stuffies to decorate my house for different holidays.

I apologize in advance that this is so long lol 🫣
I’m 25, 26 next month & I’ve ALWAYS loved dolls. Dolls, plushies, & just toys in general. I’ve always loved cute & “child like” things. Dolls have always had a special place in my soul. I was definitely that little girl who carried her favorite doll with her everywhere she went. Unfortunately, due to a very toxic family member living in the home with me growing up, all of my dolls, plushies, and toys got thrown out when I was 11, because in her words I was “too old to be playing with dolls”. It was DEVASTATING to me. Literally one of the most traumatic moments in my life. I tried so long for so many years after that to “grow up” & push my love for dolls & things away deep down, thinking I could just avoid it & move on, but I honestly never did. I beat myself up so badly for it. So much self negativity & purposeful misunderstanding of myself. I’ve fortunately, recently after so many years have been able to pull that love for “child like” things back out of me without shame. I couldn’t be happier because of it! I’ve started collecting dolls & plushies again. They help me in ways that I literally cannot put into words. A few years ago, I found out that I’m actually on the autism spectrum & that really made me open up my mind & think about my love for them. Maybe this whole time it’s been a projection thing. I can take care of something the way I was never taken care of as a child. I can cry & vent to “someone” without feeling judged or feeling like a burden. I can cuddle them & stare at them & just express myself in ways i’ve never been able to for my whole life. I can heal that piece of myself. It’s so incredibly comforting & peaceful for me to have them. Plus, as someone who’s know from a very young age that I NEVER want children, having something that looks so realistic, is so fun to me! I love being able to role play without actually having the responsibility of a living child. I know for a fact that I would be a horrible mother, so having something so lifelike that I can go buy cute outfits & baby things for is great in my eyes. All the love, none of the stress lol. They really are therapeutic tools for me. Even if they weren’t, they’re just stinking adorable & I’d have them regardless. 🥰

Sorry for intruding on your comment... just couldn't pass by without saying thank you and sending big virtual hugs from the child I was to the child you were, both told we were too old and pushed to grow up and "be normal" before we were ready.

Reborns started in the year 2000 when the first ones showed up on eBay, not in the 80s. The berenguer dolls were the dolls that were originally used to reborn. We had Berjusa dolls and jesmar dolls in the 80s that were the first realistic full vinyl anatomically correct dolls but no one was re painting them until much much later in the early 2000. I was in my 40s when reborns started and I remember seeing them on eBay and I started reborning dolls myself.

    • @TorisRebornBabies
      @TorisRebornBabies  Месяц назад

I’ve heard from many people about their stories of improving upon the realistic vinyl dolls in the 80s. I’m sure the internet also helped the spread of reborn doll popularity and evolving of the dolls in early 2000 but the 80s Is where the birth of realistic vinyl babies started and then eventually the reborn doll hobby evolved into what it is today. They probably didn’t call them reborns in the 80s when they repainted them because there simply wasn’t a name for it and there wasn’t such a large amount of collectors for them. It probably mostly boils down to the internet really driving the evolution of the hobby. ❤️

Great take on the topic. I think in general people tend to attack or ridicule hobbies that are primarily enjoyed by women. They are seen as wasteful and frivolous. If you look at “female” hobbies from a historical standpoint, women were limited from what they could enjoy: needle point, dolls, singing, fashion. Then when they turned a certain age they were expected to put their childish things away and get in the kitchen and have real babies. For men, their “toys” just got more expensive : golf, sports cars, hunting etc… They got to relax because they were the breadwinners of the family. Being a mom is a 24/7 gig. That’s totally not fair. Women who had fun were seen as bad and neglectful. I think any kind of interest can take a negative turn:
    Clean eating vs. eating disorder
    Shopping vs. shopaholic
A trip to Vegas vs. gambling addiction.
Remodeling the hope vs. drowning in debt
I think we all gotta ask ourselves:
    Does this replace real relationships?
Does it threaten my financial wellness?
Can I not stop buying even though I promised myself I wouldn’t?
Does it affect my ability to function in the world?
I think we’ve all indulged in something but can we recognize it’s unhealthy and change our behavior.I just stopped sharing with people who are not interested and don’t want to understand. I enjoy my hobby and write my own narrative. Thanks for this video, though. It can be frustrating when I do occasionally look around and take a look at who’s looking at me 😂. Then I go on living my best life ❤. Hugs and good wishes 🌈.

Agreed. I’m 23 and I love my reborns too but I don’t want kids like ever it’s like you said a 24/7 thing and I’m not ready for that kind of commitment and I have anxiety around children. But these reborns are so cute and lifelike and I like that they don’t spit up and they don’t go potty and they don’t need to be change too often they don’t cry or scream and make too much noise so I love loves so much better than real children when you arent ready for that

Hi Tori! Awww, baby Honey! I didn't connect the name with this chubby baby until now. I love your comparison to Winnie the Pooh! I feel like she needs a classic Pooh lovey or something! LOL Anyway, fantastic chat! I remember an occasion when I was asked, "Why do you have this?" in a kind, curious way by a lady who had stopped to compliment my quiet baby in an airport and stayed to hold her and inquire. I told her the truth, which is that primarily I just love dolls and think they're fun, and that this particular doll, because she was so cuddly and soft, was very comforting to me. I was about to make a family visit that I felt very anxious about and I struggled with anxiety and panic attacks, and the weight, shape, and sweetness of the doll helped me calm down. The lady was very pleasant to talk to and enjoyed cuddling my baby, and it made me really happy to put a smile on a stranger's face.

Thanks for bringing this up. I’m only interested in these dolls as a collector and nothing else. I don’t have any but I’d like to in the future and quite frankly, constantly hearing or seeing people assuming that this is the only reason why anyone has these dolls is pushing me away. I don’t want someone to pity me or whatever when I’m just into dolls. I collect other kinds of dolls as well (Barbie, Rainbow High etc) Like sometimes it’s not that deep or complex. I think that when this is all you hear about reborns, it creates a stigma and you aren’t free to just enjoy them for what they are.

Hi, I’m new to your channel. Like your thriftfinds very much. I always liked dolls from when I was very young. When I was 10-13 I had 2 little baby sisters, real life ‘dolls’ after that I became a nurse. Liked the maternity ward the most! There I fell in love with everything concern baby’s
O yes I had miscarriges also but adopted 3 children. Worked the last 15 years as a maternity nurse at peoples home and assisted with homebirths. Took care of the mom, baby, dads and toddlers with all my hart.
Now retired. I missed the baby’s so much so I found out about reborns. I like to hunt for all kinds of baby stuff, to dress them etc. Next time when somebody asked me ‘ why? ‘ i’ll say I like babydolls, the clothes, etc.
    I don’t have mental issues 😂😂😂😂

Very well thought out topic.I have collected dolls since I could speak sentences. Some times I had many, sometimes I had a few tucked away. My godfather he collected trains, he told e it is ok to collect what you love, some people collect jewelry, some paintings, some sewing machines, some huge cars, some miniature. So my first answer is always the question what do you collect or love. Then I smile and say mine is dolls. If they say creepy I say no more creepy then paintings or other forms of art.
I avoid the whole mental health issues, perhaps because I have several disabilities and am sensitive to the negative conentation of the subject in uninformed peoples mind. Many still think if you can't see or can't hear or have only limited vision or hearing, you are mentally not all there too, it irritates me to no end. So unless it is with someone who is open and into mental health and wellness I don't talk about it.

My very first introduction to reborn dolls was on the news. They did a story on a woman who made the dolls for women who have lost their children and for the elderly who have dementia. This was around 2002 when I saw this news story. I thought it was an amazing thing to do ❤ That news story was probably widely seen and people automatically thought it was the main purpose of reborn dolls.
P.s. I absolutely agree with you though. I think this was perpetuated into a reborn origin story. I also think that it being further perpetuated can be a negative beause people outside the reborn hobby will believe that there must be something wrong with those of us that do collect. Theres nothing wrong with owning reborn dolls for mental/emotional purposes..its just not the main purpose of the dolls and its never been a part of their origin story.

If you purchase any doll from anywhere and you take that doll and “transform” it to look different the doll has essentially been reborn from my understanding which makes since to me it’s as if you are giving the baby a new life, now with the whole “genuine reborn doll thing” I am extremely new and I have watched tons of videos, it boggles my mind in a world where people are killing people, scamming people, harming people and taking advantage of people just because they feel they can, we literally have wars going on in the world and there are actually grown adults hating, criticizing, making fun of other adult men and women because instead of spending their money on something that would be approved by the majority…alcohol, so many people with dui’s, drugs, gambling, etc…when did it become an ok thing that anyone who is not contributing to my bank account feels it alright to label people because they have a hobby collection that “they” don’t understand? If you collect what the majority feels is normal” you are given a pass? I feel this world is made up of many different people if what you collect is not bringing hurt harm or danger to anyone, you do you, do all crafts and I am getting in reborning dolls, why…because I like it, no one’s approval is needed and no explanation needs to be given. I don’t question why someone collects sneakers and has 500 pairs so don’t question me about what I choose to collect/purchase that brings me comfort and joy…sorry just had to give my .5 cents (inflation 😂)and I ..I said I think MOST dolls made and are available for purchase by the general public are made to bring comfort and joy if it helps an individual with loneliness, depression etc…that’s an added bonus I know all dolls bring a smile to my face but that’s just me !🤷🏾‍♀️

I have over 100 volunteer hours in doll therapy and want to get the word out for it. I’ve never had a bad experience with people with them. Unfortunately I think that people who just collect them for fun will too commonly jump to this explanation though, feeling like they have to make the reason justifiable enough to people outside of the doll community.

Why can’t people just collect them because they like them without having to worry about all these misconceptions? I know someone who seems to think that people who collect reborn dolls are mentally ill simplyy because they collect reborn dolls. It made me very hesitant to tell her that I really want to start collecting reborn dolls. She seems to think that having a storebought doll as a transitional love object is fine, but not a reborn. It’s honestly very hurtful to think about the comments she’s made. But then again, she’s also a trans-exclusionary radical feminist, so I try not to pay attention to anything anyone says if it excludes trans people!
