    We made three sets of barn doors for our home. One set we made served as a wall in one end and the other sliding door was moved to get in to a decided area to form a third bedroom or man cave. They turned out beautiful. This space was a room when originally built but the previous owner removed the wall. My husband made a foe beam to cover the exposed two by four on the ceiling. Watching you build your doors helped a great deal. Thank you for your instructive content.

    don't forget to make the closure for the roosting boxes in the new one so they don't sleep in them..

    • @donaldmiller8629
      @donaldmiller8629 4 года назад +3

      @ Cabola ,
      If the roosting bars are made higher than the nesting boxes then the chickens will not normally roost in the nesting boxes. Chickens generally try to roost higher rather than lower which keeps them further out of the reach of predators. There is also a pecking order for the higher roosts. The alpha chickens get the higher roosts while the beta chickens have to settle for the lower roosts which are closer down to predators. I make my roosts all at the same level. There is still some jousting for what is perceived as the best position. Usually the warmest spot during the winter time.

    The best thing about making your own doors is they always fit. Even if the top of the doorway is two inches wider than be bottom, you just make them the irregular size and shape. It's the same as gates. The gate to our duck pen is much wider at the top than the bottom. A pre-made gate would never fit but I made one to the odd shape and it's perfect.

  • @PatricesProjects
    @PatricesProjects 4 года назад

    I haven't made doors before, but I have made door frames, and that was intimidating. I have made a few gates, if that counts. I feel for everyone getting frozen in that cold snap. I wish we were a bit colder and wetter. We're having a particularly warm and super dry beginning of the year. I really like how the coop is turning out. And those ribs looked incredible.

I was thinking of how many times I've driven north to NH and VT for skiing. There was often a smack of cold in your face when you'd get out of your car after 3 or 4 hours of nonstop driving. Dutch door - the way you point out the height difference between inside and out was inverted (for an outwards opening door). You have to be able to open the upper door first. That way, without part of the household being able to walk out and part of the livestock being able to walk in, you can let breezes of fresh air in and less fresh air out.

    If you like a little kick with your cornbread, add to the mix half cup of whole corn, and two table spoons of jalapeno pepper chips. It gives a little kick without burning you down. As you may know in Texas we use jalapeno peppers with everything. Enjoy your videos and watching you build. I just don't know how you work out in that cold. By the way Sunday and Monday we had 80 degrees then back down to the upper 50's today. I read where someone said they wish summer and winter would quit fighting over custody of Texas.

    When I had my organic garden I made my own ketchup, its not hard. I put it up in small 1/2 pint jars as a discouragement to using a lot of it. You can control the sugar level and the seasonings, cinnamon is especially delicious (and healthy) in home made ketchup. I love a good tomato sauce and ketchup is my favorite.

    I've been loving all the different door options you've shown, really cool, learning a lot from you.
    Are you able to convert the New Yolk City nest boxes to make them insulated like the new one so you won't have the eggs freezing there?

      Clare Love in temps that cold, those eggs are frozen within an hour of the time she lays it!

    GOOOD MOORNING AL AND FAMILY. I can't imagine wanting to run outside for anything with -2 degrees. Much less I think you said tomorrow will be -20. I'm in New York were its a bit warmer today, 30. I'm 70, my old bones say, No, 👎 please don't go out. And I listen. Hee,hee,hee. Stay home and cook and bake. Tomorrow is another day. Stay Warm.
    You both did a fantastic job on the chicken coop palace, just 💘it.
    Gina, the ribs look great and cooked so tender, its falling off the bones. G-D Bless and stay safe and warm.

    I so admire all of you...being a Nature Lover, I wonder if Al would consider building some bat boxes for your Homestead from your wood scraps....the bats would appreciate it...they can be installed on your trees or outbuildings...cheers! Prayers for all if you!

    I grew up in a suburb of Boston and left in '78. I could never go back to that weather. I'm a Texan now. For sure...

    I was looking forward to the cherry wood trimming. That would have been beautiful. Are you going to remodel New Yolk City. If not, Moose and the ladies are going to get angry, protest by not laying anymore eggs. Watch out!

    Making doors is nice but the trick is making the door frame so you can weather strip it with the new style saw cut weather stripping. Fine looking doors and great handle hardware and hinges. Great content 👍

    Al - love the doors you build. When you put the horizontal cross brace on the door, it looks like two sections - an upper and a lower. You can also add a diagonal brace in the upper and again in the lower section to help further support the weight/keep the door from moving out of square. At least one in the lower section, that passes the weight to where the hinge mounts, would enhance structural integrity. In any case - you're there doing it... so if it's light and you're not worried about shift... then hopefully it'll stand up to the test of time and use... as is. Thanks for sharing as always.

    There now I will get notifications on your videos. Bad part about watching utube on tv it wont let me do certain things.
    GREAT DOORS! Love your carpentry skills and your shop. One quick suggestion... Rear blade for your tractor. Kubota has a two in one take and blade all in one... That back blade works amazing to plow snow. I know you have the truck but a rear blade will get more ice up. Visabity and maneuvering around everything is easier and faster the the truck. Just an idea so your not fighting the snow in the paths... I'm disabled and use my tractor for about everything.... Amazing what you can get done with one....

    We have the Chicken Guard Extreme as well. Although it would be less convenient, you could install it on the inside of New Yolk City (we did that with ours). That would keep the weather off the string etc. or you could put an awning over the chicken door . We love watching your journey. You accomplished so much!
