Your daughter Olivia makes my momma heart happy. From pretend coffee shop to running with the goats... she is clearly a very happy child. Her smile makes her eyes sparkle. Heather🇨🇦
How about using an old sheet of linoleum (plastic kitchen flooring) to cover the floor in the chicken building you just built. It would make the floor a whole lot easier to clean when you have to shovel it out and will keep your flooring in better shape longer. I saw it done by another modern homesteader and thoughtit was a good idea.
The running of the goats with Miss Olivia was the best thing I've seen in a long time. Made me smile. Thanks for providing us the opportunity to experience a digital homestead experience. I enjoy your adventures so much. God bless.
I have the exact same giant piece of ice/snow, whatever you want to call it ready to slide off of our metal roof also. Last year they started sliding off in the morning sun....it acted as an alarm clock that day, sounded like an earthquake haha :)
Ben rubbing a chicken guard for 7 months now. Works great on lux setting. Early on I had a couple chickens stuck outside but they got used to being in before dark now. They say there bats ate good for a year, but batteries are cheap, chickens too but the time to get them productive is priceless, might change them like your smoke detector.
@@cathiwim Seems like we all think like you do. I didn't think of the darker inside traps chickens outside comment. That's true. Seems like an overall bad installation.
Why in the door? seems like every time you want to use the door you’ll have to move the ramp, why not just next to the door so you don’t have to move the ramp every time you use the door. Just a thought
My information is late spring for western PA. Forget the darn groundhog he's a pampered pet ! Even the Old Farmer's Almanac is calling for cold, flurries and/or a 'snowstorm' for regions 3,6,7 especially the end of March !
1. Don't add wood ashes to your garden soil. Food crops require acidic soil, and wood ash is extremely alkaline. Alkali is why they make bar soap with wood ash. 2. Chickens are not herbivores. They require meat protein. That's why your egg production drops so drastically in winter without grublies. It's also why yard eggs are better and more plentiful.
Al I have a CONTENT IDEA.... could you please do a time lapse of the snow falling off your workshop roof? When Glenn and I drive around Hampshire we think it’s amazing the way snow slips off a metal roof. Sometimes we are in awe at how far it sticks over the edge without falling, but we rarely get to experience “THE FALL”...... I think it would be super cool to see that happen. Thanks...
The light sensor for my PulletShut door is inside the barn and still opens/closes the door fine, yours should be fine inside. When it was outside operation was well before it was light in the coop (converted stall 8' from the wall with the windows) in the morning and after it was too dark to see outside at night.
Good mornin New Yolk City .... are you putting a water collector on the new Chicken Chalet? Maybe you can use an apple tree branch for the roosting pole in the Chicken Chalet since you are cutting up the trees anyway .... free lumber to re-purpose instead of turning it all into ash? Have a nice Friday & weekend AL, Gina & Olivia ... take care.
I like that there is very little plastic in the packaging! Great move, Chicken Guard! I love the door/ramp for the new coop, great design. Man, I love me some good Mexican food. I hope you saved me some! Blessings to all.
Was thinking the treads might be in a shallow V shape with a drain space at the middle ... Might lessen ice buildup on the ramp ... No ramp roof ??? ... Love the dragon steam release ... Hate all the ads from gofundme after making a donation ...
Something to consider with the new Chicken door. Since it is inside the light sensor is probably not going to work as you would like. Especially during bad weather.
Please when you are scraping things off your cutting board use the non sharp part of your knife.. it will make the sharp edge last longer.. and it's just a terrible noise too! Lol
You should put a little round over (to remove the sharp edges) on the treads of the ramp. Chickens could get bumble foot from sharp edges which would never heal. Wouldn't heal because chickens are always on their feet. Just a suggestion.
Spring is coming early alright, at least down here. At the beginning of February I killed a rattlesnake and geese have been flying back in as well. Allergies are kicking up and the plants are flowering.
I like that door . A very cool idea one thats multiple functional. An bitties are nothing but poopers. I sure do enjoy them they can be special. We have 1 Cochin that loves 2 stand on my feet. An my speckled Sussex just gotta be petted.
Whoa, the light sensor is on the unit, ir will close the door when it's dark in the coop which may be way earlier then outside. I wish they would make a remote sensor. My other coop is running a ladies first door. Ir uses a solar panel for open and close and charges the batteries ta boot BUT nice love the cord from the panel so I had to ot it in metal flex conduit. They were eating it like licorice!
Love Olivia's job training! She's going to be employee of the month in no time! Your a great daddy Al! I'm sure you know this but maybe a read can get something from this.... wood ash is fantastic for ice covered walkways. Gives you traction without wrecking the surface below.👍🏻

You should check inside your coop everyday. Chickens don't always lay their eggs in the next boxes. Also one could be sick or dead in there. I enjoy watching your videos. We have been hobby farmers for 30 years. Horses, cattle, sheep, chickens and one goat.
I was thinking if they offered two different lifting options on the same unit one normal and one that goes directly out the back of the unit you could drill directly through the door run the lift cord through the door over a nylon roller and mount the control box on the outside directly over the drilled hole witch would leave a neet finish on the outside regards Alan
We're having the same issue in northern NJ. one tree already budded out due to this insane weather and we had to pull the tap. MUCH less sap this winter. :(
we can get colder than that here. We haven't had any issues with the cold the only issues we've had is it getting rained on and then freeze and the door freeze shut.
Al - your Barista is great! Quick question - why place the Chicken Guard in the Door instead of the wall like your other coup? Seems simpler to use the "man door" if the "chicken door" and ramp were attached to the fixed door, but I'll bet there's a reason I haven't thought of (like the brilliant idea of putting the Chicken Guard inside to stay out of weather ... Really enjoy your journey ... best to you and your family!

I'm always amazed that the beginning of winter we bundle up at the first 30 degrees and by the end of winter we are down to sweatshirts.
It is so funny how that happens!

I love seeing cute little Olivia playing shop keeper! It warms my heart ❤️
You could screw a piece of rubber mat (doormat) over the hinges keeps it clear.

i like that idea
Ashes is a purifier
I learn this many years ago.
Adding ashe to the compost is an excellent idea.

Ashes are also used to make soap along with lye.

By installing the automatic door in the entry door, you will have to remove the ramp when you want or need get in the chicken coop!
Yes but we don’t use the door to go into the coop very often. We collect the eggs from the outside of the nesting box.
I agree with David.
I agree with David. Bad decision.
David Klimek no I don’t think so. He’ll have to raise the ramp & lock in place first, then he can open the coop door.

If it works, you can easily replicate the same in NYC
Olivia needs a homemade playhouse/store.
How about a few holes drilled into damp just above cross timbers to stop water pooling there?
With the coop's hinged bottom tray, you could also make a hinged top cover.
Could you try to put the coop ramp on a pulley to raise the ramp at night for additional protection for the chickens and to keep the weather off of it

Better make a cover or box for the door control, for the chicken will be pecking at the lights on it, for sure as daylight!
