    I couldn't care less about voxel lines, like you say, if someone says they can see them after the anti aliasing, image blur AND painting, then they're talking trollop. What matters to me is the ease of use and longevity. 20,000 hours is absurd, by the time that packs in you'll be looking to upgrade anyway, to whatever Star Trek style replicator that Phrozen release in five years time, in their ever ongoing quest for a lower pixel width. Plus if this thing pierces its FEP, yes you've got a resin spill to clean up, but what you haven't got is an LCD screen to replace. It's so much more forgiving of mistakes and print failures. That's the real value here.
    Would love to see an actual review of the thing, love Elegoo as a company, they gave me some of the best customer service I've ever had, so I've been hanging around to see what they had to offer in the DLP space. Wonder why none of the big 3D printer channels have really covered it yet, it seems to be available. Any news on that front?

    I am looking to get a DLP to make PCBs, so I really need that fine pixel resolution. The D2 having fake pixels is news to me, and that would be a huge problem for making 50 micron traces on PCBs. The sharpness of the DLP is going to be very good for my application.

    • @FauxHammer
      @FauxHammer  Год назад +5

      It’s not really fake but it’s not true 2k. There’s a little device that shifts the display half a pixel over as it refreshes what’s being displayed. So fast your eyes can’t perceive it.
      I suppose it’s like interlaced versus progressive scan in a way it only renders half the display, shifts then renders the other half at a crazy fast refresh rate.
      You do get the improved resolution at the cost of weaker light. But it’s still DLP light so faster than an LCD equivalent.

  • @clanpsi
    @clanpsi Год назад +2

    For me, longevity is a lot more important than how light works. DLP projectors last orders of magnitude longer than LCD screens.

    I took a hiatus from the hobby when I went to go travelling and sold all my stuff. Now I'm back in the UK I'm super keen to get another printer, but man I can't bring myself to pull the trigger on anything right now.
    I was looking at the Photon D2, but a lot of my customers (I'm a miniatures designer) were swearing that the Mars 3 was good enough. But I know for a fact it's a real pain in the butt to mess with exposure settings and whatnot, so DLP seemed seductive.
    But what put me off the D2, out of all things, was anxiety over wash and cure stations; I own a Mercury Plus, which I presume I'd have to do away with to fit a D2's build plate in the vat (I like to wash before removing miniatures from the plate), but I have no idea what wash and cure station I'd want to buy to fit the mount for the D2's plate.
    Add to that the D2's price point and now the news of this Elegoo Mars 4 and I wonder if I should just wait it out.

    • @FauxHammer
      @FauxHammer  Год назад

      Honestly at this point I'd wait. I get you about cleaning before removal, I don't do that, but mostly because It takes resin off the plate that could end up back in the vat and eventually become printed. I'm a skinflint.

      @@davidstone-haigh4880 It really depends on what you want to print with it. Saturn 2 and D2 are two excellent tools but they have their own advantage. Ideally you'd get both ! Want to print large models (tanks, planes, statues, scenery) ? Go Saturn 2 it does incredibly defined large prints which were up to now way less precise. Want to do minute details on small figurines or jewelry masters, or want a long lasting printer ? Go D2. As I said if I was entering the field today, I'd get both !

      【9.1-inch 6K Mono LCD】ELEGOO MARS 4 Max features a 9.1-inch monochrome LCD screen with a resolution of 5760x3600 and an XY resolution of 34um, and printing speed up to 70mm/H. The 9H hardness tempered glass with excellent light transmission protects the LCD screen from scratches and damage caused by resin dripping or penetration.
      【COB+ Refractive Light Source】MARS 4 Max adopts the COB+ refractive light source to ensure that the emitted 405nm wavelength beam is more vertical and uniform on the entire LCD screen after refraction. Paired with the full grayscale anti-aliasing algorithm to make printed models with finer and more realistic details and a smoother surface.
      【Large Build Volume】The large build volume of 195.84x122.4x150mm (7.71x4.81x5.9 inches) provides you with more creative space to print a large model or print multiple parts in batches, thus increasing your productivity.
      【Efficient Heat Dissipation】Double fan cooling system design, one for air inlet and the other for air outlet, has faster air circulation and higher heat dissipation efficiency, which extends the service life of 3D printers.
      【Voxeldance Tango Software】It has 3 printing modes: static mode and dynamic mode (including smooth and high-speed mode). In dynamic mode, when the printed model cross-section is small, the print lifting speed is faster to improve printing efficiency; on the contrary, the printing speed will slow down. Combined with ELEGOO self-developed new open-source GOO slicing format, which supports multiple slicing software without restriction.

    As a possible first time printer buyer these new DLP printers sound great but any reviews about printers seem to be about printing Ogres and Dragons and the great detail in hair or scales but I will be printing parts for 1:32 model tractors - mechanical rather than organic - and wonder if a printer like this would be overkill especially as it probably won't be used that often.

    • @FauxHammer
      @FauxHammer  Год назад

      I wouldn't say overkill, It's about finding the balance of what you want between quality, scale and ease of use.
      your use case may be especially suited to DLP as you likely won't need details like hair or skin textures on miniatures, but defined simple shapes down to pop rivets or gauge needles at 1:32 scale?
      But since it won't be used frequently, DLP will be easier to use because you don't need to get it dialled in anywhere near as much as an LCD printer. the exposure time range for success is far wider on DLP.

      @@FauxHammer I hear ya, I would love to see the difference up close. And the Saturn 2 8k. Which I was told yesterday was a 10 inch screen at 28.5 microns. The Saturn was a 9 inch screen and pushing 50 microns but it was a 4 k resolution. But the cost point was very close. So I wondered why the cost of the 8k was so cheep. Compared to the 4K. What were the major differences in the resolution. I am not sure. I wanted to know if the 4K was going to e obsolete in a year. If I should just purchase the 6k or 8k now, to save time and money. They told me they will never get rid of the Mars 3 pro because it’s the best of the best 4K machine. They said it is their beginner friendly machine that they will t week but they will never get rid of it. So that’s a good thing. Now it’s for me if I want to do large prints or just stay small. Because honestly I am thinking of going with the pro because of less resin usage and 34.5 micron on a 6 inch screen. It’s 299 and that’s a great deal.

    Not trying to start a fight I noticed you mentioned in the video, then several times in the comments that it takes so long to dial in exposure settings on LCD printers. But why are you spending so much time on exposure settings, to the point that you've repeatedly commented on it being one of the major downsides of an LCD printer?
    I ran a 40 minute test print on my Saturn with the resin that I intended to use, dropped the time by 0.4 seconds, ran another test print and haven't looked back since. Sure, I spent 90 minutes dialing it in.
    Once.
    A year ago.
    In that year I've saved 0.4 seconds on every layer I've printed which is much more time efficient than just spitballing a random time like you suggest that people can/should do with a DLP. In my first 5-6 prints that 0.4 seconds per layer time savings probably "paid back" my 90 minute time investment.
    And if you're going to do the same dial in process with a DLP then why are you mentioning it as a detraction for the LCD?

      the video puts more effort on re-explaining what a DLP is than in Elegoo's new printer characteristics which can be explained as smaller printer surface, air purifier and we don't really anything else. The guy "leaking" the printer could have given some more info if he already had a working model. This looks like an Elegoo water testing
