Hey Jonny, you're not stupid at all. I left a comment under a recent video saying just learn Thai. Actually, I think you know more than you realise, for example....... when you go to a massage place and all the girls introduce themselves, you actually catch all their names - which they say at a super fast speed. You already have decent listening skills. I think if you can work around any learning difficulties, and eventually become conversationally fluent you will really enjoy it. Take your time, and also when it comes to remembering things, always revise. Learn something new, and go over it again in an hour, then a day, then a week etc. Kids learn to how to talk from their parents, which is basically immersion, you are already there in TH. If you want to, you can do it. Good luck!. Either way, you're still living the dream. cheers 😁👍

One good thing about not learning the Thai language and also not speaking Thinglish is you can still have your original accent, when I was in Thai I was learning the language and also was speaking full on Thinglish(Thai-English) and lost my native accent, when I went home people used to laugh at me, even now people ask me where I'm from, 10 years later my accent still isn't back to normal, probably never will be. One thing I found about her Thai is she says R's as R's, most Thai's say R's as L's not only in Thai but a lot of Asia do like Chinese, etc (my missus is Chinese and her children are learning English, her younger son doesn't know how to say r's, his brother's name is Harry but he call's him Hally hehe). Like Song roi ha sip, but most thai's say song loi ha sip, so most Thai's say farang as falang, so maybe she say's farang which would be good to hear because that's how they spell it!!! But she did say if it's not spicy it's not deRicious, same as my Thai ex gf used to say, but she said deLicious!!! She also say's aroi as aloi like most Thai's so it's a bit mixed up between R's and L's.

When I started traveling internationally in the late 80's I tried to learn at least some of the languages of where I was working but the trips were to many different countries and mostly short durations. As time went on, the trips got longer but my patience grew shorter with trying to learn. Then add in severe hearing issues that made it really difficult to try to learn.
You made me miss the mango and sticky rice, one of my favorites. Oh, but the time is nearing. 100 days until departure.

I've struggled to learn Thai due to some issues and getting older doesn't help. I was planning to immerse myself into Thai lessons properly this time but these Thai tax laws on incoming foreign funds has put doubt on whether i can afford to live here anymore and put a huge damper on my enthusiasm to learn Thai. If the tax laws are enforced then I'd be better off learning Tagalog (Phillipines) which is where I'll probably go. So holding off on committing myself until next year and things are clarified hopefully.

Please don't call yourself F'N stupid, because I'm in the same boat you are Jonny.
I'm 55 and I've suffered from dyslexia all my life.
I realize that we are our own worst self-critics.
We all might struggle at certain things but we all excel in other ways.
Thats what makes the world uniquely diversified.
The only way to learn things is through repetition as you're well aware.
You can't just say a word, once or twice and expect to remember it a week later.
You're at an advantage because you're immersed in the culture and have Thai people around you 24/7 with whom you can practice with.
Thank you for the interesting an informative video.
    Take care.

At the outset I used the CD roms children use to learn Thai. This along with some same level workbooks with the consonants, vowels and tone marks was remarkably helpful as well as intuitive. a free android app called "Thai script" is excellent. You will learn the native pronunciation and it has quizzes as well. I had also enrolled in a 1 year program thinking it would help but was disappointed. I entered at the level where my class read Thai language daily but the teacher should have but never dissected what we read so we could better learn. I saw a high % of other level students lacked focus and discipline.

When fah speaking Thai her tone became softer while speaking English the sound is harsher, must be something in the throat that stop the pronunciation.
Fah has a very strong Thai accent when speaking English but it is clear enough to understand. Imagine us speaking Thai in English accent = this strangeness is probably what it would sound like to the Thai. 😅😮😊

I'm the same I have suffered all my life with dyslexia I suffered in maths, English, biology, chemistry e.t.c. I left school with no qualifications so there was ONLY one thing I could do and that was the army and to be honest I wasn't suited for that type of job I was too young and naive. I have worked in heavy industries when I was medically discharged from the army and now my health has suffered from doing these jobs, I have white finger syndrome in both of my hands, Sheueumans spinal, hearing loss, joint problems knees and elbows and I suffer from PTSD due to the armed conflicts whilst I was in the army, but I'm trying to retire in 4-5 years and then retire to Thailand I know I will have to try to learn Thai language but I'm not sure if the dyslexia will be a problem, if you mention you have dyslexia you get the usual you must be thick attitude or they say your full of bullshit but not everyone but especially when they find out and you are there new shift manager which I have been a manager for 25 years I worked my way up the ladder by hard graft and determination.

Isaan sausage is the best!!! There's a shortcut to making it, which I have explored. Use Sauerkraut instead of sour rice. You can have it done in a day or two - fully cured. The sauerkraut has to be "real & fermented" without pasteurization. It's fantastic for your gut biome, but don't tell everybody. I don't want the prices to go through the roof on my favorite sausage.
