I can't believe it's been nearly 6 years (2,105 days) since I made this terrarium! It feels like just yesterday. I had a lot of fun with this one and I'm excited to share the progress. In some ways I wish that I would have left it alone, but I know it will look like that again in no time. Let me know what you think and have a great weekend!
Your OG terrarium’s are what originally brought me to your channel. I don’t even know how long I’ve been subscribed now but it’s definitely been a while. Feels like a full circle 😄
Been here since 14k subs! Seen the moves, the moments, all of it. I Always thought more people should see Tanners content and so happy to see how the channel has grown (pun intended)
I love this! Seems like we see so much content these days about making terrariums but nobody ever shows how it's doing after 6 years! Well done partner
thats one thing i love about Tanner is that he revisits his builds, whether they make it or not, and when they dont, he tries to figure out what failed for future builds.
I love long-term terrariums. But I think you were right in trimming/cleaning after four years. Naturalistic is awesome, but if the plants can't get enough light or you can't see in, it defeats the dual purpose of working well and you enjoying it. Wonderful work as always!
This video brought me an unexpected bit of peace. It always takes me back a step when I find something that so simply put makes my day better for unexplained reasons. Thank you, I do believe you have sparked an interest in my life and I will be attempting to create one of these small wonderful worlds.
I suppose one of the great aspects of having a RUclips channel for content like this, is that you have a huge history and an archive of information on your work, that you can you can refer back to should you need to, for yet another future project. Things that you yourself may have forgotten about, things you may like to remind yourself on what your thought process was like at the time or just seeing how far you've come. Great stuff, this is easily one of my favourite channels on scapes and ecosystems.
I love the terrarium updates, one of my favorites of this channel. It shows the passage of time in a way that feels like a celebration rather than a lament. I hope to see this one keep going over the years!
It seems almost crazy to me that I watched you build this six years ago, and that it's been almost a decade since HTT when I discovered your channel. Would you ever consider doing an updated How To series with some information you've learned since the originals? That said, thanks for being a source of inspiration for so long. You've truly made your mark on this hobby throughout the world, and we love watching you grow!
Have you ever considered culturing fungi to add to the ecosystems? I'm currently reading Suzanne Simard's 'Finding the mother tree' and can't help but wonder how different kinds of fungi would work in a small ecosystem like these terrariums, like what effects they might have on growth and decomposition, whether they would have altered the success or failure of certain plants survival. Really interesting stuff! Love to see you revisit an old favourite and to see it still going is wonderful!
As much as we all love the art your terrariums, the editing this took shows not only how your have grown as an artist with plants, but with your film making skills as well. This video has amazing angles, great music, gripping narration, and an amazing story arc. Keep it up Tanner!
Amazing! Just as an ecosystem in the real world, a terrarium develops and evolves over time :) I remember the video when it came out, I'm so glad you're still around.
i really appreciate this vid and i hope you do more like it. Im so tired of fake terrarium BS that looks amazing when its first made, but quickly dies or turns ugly. A terrarium is a living thing its not a painting, its meant to grow and evolve over time. Ive found that its not very easy to actually make a terrarium thrive over a long period of time, and i appreciate you mentioning that several species died out.
It so doesn't sound stupid if you didn't feel like a proud father you wouldn't put you heart and soul into everything you do for these dear and unique animals. I love that you watched and learned what Sampson really needs, we all learn by experience how each of our own individual creatures behave and what they truly need. I have several tanks a Koi pond and have owned several lizards, birds, fish and of course cats and dogs along the way and each has been a truly wonderful learning experience. I try to give them all the best I can. I so appreciate you and all you do! You have so inspired me to do even more for my creatures! And you many times have shown me the way!
Every time I look forward to your video's as a little zen moment to start the workweek. With your traditional ending line of 'Until next time SerpaSquad, take care and peace.' you've started many a week for me. Thank you for all your effort.
I love seeing how far it's come after so many years. That's an amazing transformation and it's so intriguing to see how nature manages itself in such an enclosed space.
Absolutely stunned. I still remember when you put the first video out on this! Shortly before that was when I started following your channel. You popped up on my feed again after I searched some salt water content, and I couldn’t be happier to see how far you’ve come! Still haven’t made my own terrarium but I live vicariously through you and my brother-in-law who is very active in terrariums and frog collecting. Thanks for doing what you do and keep truckin along man!
We all need a bit a simplification every now and then. I am an old man and I must say that this process isn’t pleasant but generally aids in the future. I wish you all the very best of health and happiness.
I can still only get syngonium, frittonias, hypoestes and moss to survive more than a month in a jar. This looks amazing and gives me hope that I can one day get a creeping vine to take hold :')
my first and best one was one where spiders, rolie polies and a lot of other stuff survived 6 months together with a huge plant, until brown mold killef everything, even itself after a while.
@@klippschliefer4968 did you have springtails? I've never had a mold issue with springtails except one time when I used a stick that was too fresh (not completely dried) Helps to boil your hardscape for a few minutes too before putting it in. But any live/fresh wood is bound to grow mold, and once mold starts the springtails can't do much.
springtails where already in the soil, since i used earth from the woods. The srange thing was that the mold started after 6 months, so it where already in a good balance, and no mold was there until the end. So no idea what happened.
I literally only managed to get a small aloe vera to survive in a large jar full of springtails and rolly pollies. The rolly pollies devoured every other plant I put in there, all except the aloe vera which is still growing (no idea how. there is a huge lack of light.) I do not have a green thumb, it would appear. Not even mold or algae grows in my jars. Everything dies except the springtails and rolly pollies.
Love the updates on these long term projects like this. It is so wonderful to see how a terrarium or aquarium landscape looks and evolves over time, how it needs to be maintained, and ultimately how it lasts and turns out as a living ecosystem long term. That is something I love the most about your channel and teaching style. Thank you!!!
I wish there were more videos like this, I love seeing the progression of terrariums. This was very educational and I've watched it 3 times already and will probably watch it many more times.
I love this terrarium. I'm working on one similar in size that sits on my coffee table. I have a 3 gallon one on my desk at work. Thank you for sharing your creations with us.
Hi Taner ! Once again u showed , how much u are deep in terrarium art. I had seen the video of this terrarium when u built it , years back. This update video is just perfect. I've just watched your recent videos on this terrarium because I'm planning something similar. What a great terrarium and journey, I love it 😍
I loved watching this. I made a terrarium as a school project when I was younger and it lasted three years. It was amazing to me how life sustained itself by being in the light.
It’s interesting that remember how difficult it was to make a terrarium in a 5 gallon water bottle for the office before they became plastic they were often used. I kept it in a niche right behind the office water cooler for everyone to watch as a group and changed. I’m thinking now of buying some aquarium plants and growing them immersed in 10 gallon tanks since I can get them for such a good price, I will have to resort to plastic on the top until I can afford those glass lids. I can get a 10 gallon tank for $10 on sale but the lid for the tank is $24.
The terrariums actually brought me here back when I started following your channel, seems like yesterday but it's already been years and I'm always amazed by how the time flies! If not since you published the first video of this one, I'm quite sure it was shortly after.. it's shocking! 😱
Love this update! Gives me hope for some of my older terrariums that I desperately need to revisit and maintenance. As always thank you for the amazing content!
This is so great. You inspired me some years ago to try out to create this kind of Terrariums and it went a great Hobby for me too. Thanks for this great Inspiration and congrat for this great success with your piece of Natural Art. Lets take a Look on it from time to time.
Have you ever considered making an aquatic vivarium for Triops (or Tadpole Shrimp)? They're super simple to keep, look prehistoric, and are all-around generally cool! They're also really cheap too
Such a beautiful video, I love your insight and knowledge. You have inspired me to take on projects like this again in the future whenever I have the means. I hope you and the Mrs are doing well. Peace, love, and unity. ❤️
Very cool! I’m always inspired to do more terrarium projects after watching your videos. I have a plant order out now for a medium size jar. It will be in my office. I have 3 identical 16 gallon rimless aquariums that I want to make into terrariums if I can figure out how to cover correctly too.
Nice. I have a similar vessel I’m planning to plant, it’s a bit shorter and wider, same cork lid. This helped with my planning and supply list. Thanks Tanner!
This maybe what led me to you. Its def these type projects. You and Life In Jars have inspired me. I can't have pets so I have several small jars with pond and shore flora and fauna. Mosty only moss left plant wise but new generations of snails, flatworms and different micro and mini beasties swimming around it used to have Creeping Jenny and other stuff but moss and Algae are all that remain cycling.
Don't know how youtube recommended you to me, but i have a jar with moss that is already 4 years, and unopened for 3,5 years. It even moved with me across the whole country! have another three jars, but they aren't as amazing as this first one. I simply found a piece of moss in a forest, took it with me, and planted it in a jar. But I refuse to open it! :D but maybe maintenance for the other three is needed. Thanks for the video! you inspired me to make more lil forests in a jars :)

A simple but really nice video.
Master class designs and a top notch narrator as well

Such a good question. I bet getting fruiting bodies would be really tricky. But mold, yeasts... There must be some in there right now.
