20:43 To me this is the most pivotal and profound moment in the movie. To me this is where K realizes you don't have to the "Hero" or the "Main Character" of someone's story to make a difference. We're all just people trying to find our way in this world and whether we know it or not, no matter how small we feel, we can have an impact on something bigger than ourselves.
Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 are definitely on the shortlist of the most eminently re-watchable movies of all time.
The greatest sequel ever made, to me it even surpasses the first film
Yes on the first part, and a no in the second. But it's close.
I've given up comparing them. I find them both pretty perfect (for my personal tastes) and they both stand out on their own. Villeneuve showed remarkable restraint and respect by not rehashing and flooding 2049 with memberberries. Mad love for that man.
Agreed, and I love the first film. This one just surpassed it in some ways for me. I don't fault anyone who disagrees but this movie expands on the original and even folds in some of the ideas from 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' in ways that I appreciate. I love how Villeneuve even paid homage to the original in score. Hans Zimmer and his team did something special, hearing it in the theater was a transformative.
@nullunit I honestly don't remember it in the theater. I saw it with my 2 best friends on a mega screen but that memory is no where to be found in my mind. It fucking transported me elsewhere. I think that is the weirdest compliment I've ever given to a film.
Agreed. First was good, but the second was absolutely amazing. Music, cinematography, acting, action, set pieces, story....perfection.

He just absolutely nails the role of K and is so impressive in so many scenes.
2049 is an absolute masterpiece and he's one of the main reasons why.
Mine too. His performance in First Man is a close second. He scared the hell out of me as Neil Armstrong.
When Joe lies on the stairs at the end, dying, the score is the same as that during Roy’s “tears in the rain” monologue on the first movie. That’s attention to detail. Closed the circle perfectly.
This version was more emotional too, that whole build up going on while deckard was talking to joe before and after he went in the memory building, and the way joe standing there looking down at the ground. The music playing during that whole scene is so good.
And all the memories won’t be lost. Like history is a circle but hopefully one that trends in an upward trajectory.
I understand K in a way, he got everything he wanted at first, he had hope that he was something more and the realisation that it was all a lie came crashing down on him and he lost everything. I think we as people want to feel special in our own lives and can relate to his struggles in a way. I certainly remember feeling like I got everything I wanted in my life and I felt special and I certainly remember the pain and realisation I had when I lost it all. This series has a special place in my heart. I thoroughly enjoy watching people experience this movie for the first time.
What I love the most is that, during the movie, you want it to be him but, he's just a replicant yet... he shows exactly what it means to be human regardless of where he came from or "what" he is. It makes the message all too real of what it is to be human.
Exactly. Amazing story telling and character development. I think many of us, me included, expected K to be a replicant and the film would be about that, but they tell us that very quickly and then we’re on a damn journey. Utterly impeccable follow up.
What I love (no pun intended) about this movie are the little details that aren’t explained. They only make sense once the whole picture is painted. For example:
>Wood is extremely valuable (considering how no one has seen a tree, & per Dr. Badger). Goes to show how rich Wallace is since his entire building is made of wood.
>We all think K is the child, yet the child hiding the horse has hair. All of the boys have shaved heads
>Replicants are so human, even they discriminate. They look down on holograms as being ’not real’.
FWIW-I also love the phrase “the fabulous new”. It sounds like something a tyrant would say.
It’s pretty clever that they built on the concept of Tyrell’s nieces’ memories from the first movie and used it to explore the mystery of Deckard’s and Rachel’s escape in the aftermath.
Its a concept from the original novella that kind of missed its target in the first movie but managed to get fully fleshed out in this movie.
Roger Deakins camera work and lighting, just sublime. It's worth watching just to learn.

I'll never forget what it was like to watch that final fight between K and Luv in the theater, I don't think anyone was breathing. And K's sacrifice makes him one of my favorite heroic characters ever.
Listening to Luv underwater made you feel that moment.
Denis Villeneuve is a genius. The best director of the current generation.
I love how Deckard ends the film with that little quarter smile reminiscent of the Mona Lisa.
K/ Joe's story is such a tragic one.
He lived as nothing more than a machine made to hunt other machines. Then he was given reason to believe they were more than just machines, and what's more; he wasn't just another product - he had a childhood, a mother and father. And he had someone who loved him.
Then it was ripped from right under him. Joi was killed in front of him, it was revealed that he was mislead in all his beliefs of having a family, the man he had tried to open up to as a son wasn't his father, and even the memory of Joi was torn apart by the reminder that she didn't love him - she was merely programmed to make him happy.
In the end all he had left was his actions, and he chose to aid the person whose life he thought was his own - with no more to gain but a cold, lonely death.
I agree with everything except the last bit. K didn't die a cold, lonely death. He died a human death by doing what he could to help Deckard and his daughter, who are the closest things he has to a family.
@@FuckRUclipsAndGoogle Yes, absolutely. It was a very human death, and he died with purpose. "Who am I to you", Deckard asked him - but K sends him away "go meet your daughter." His purpose was fulfilled, he wasn't a son to this man, and that was it.
After fulfilling that purpose he laid down on the frozen steps and died alone in the falling snow.

Brilliantly put. I love how such a big film can really drill down into these small fleeting subtle moments of thought, of action. While Marvel films slap you across the face with the morality of their heroes, a film like this shows the same actions but with such depth and intricacy. It’s just a wonder to behold.
I remember watching this in the theatres when I was 17 and remembering how mind blowing of an experience it was. The storytelling is so well done even in this reaction you feel how epic it is.
Yeah, I was 19, I had wanted to see the first Blade Runner for a while, but never got around to it. I finally decided to watch it once 2049 got into theaters and loved it, then went to see 2049 the next day and loved that too.
I think part of the reason this works so well is they got Hampton Fancher (the original screenwriter) back to work on it.
I wonder how many rejected ideas from the original made their way into this one.

Love how passionate you are about this movie. I also love this movie as well. It’s a shame this movie didn’t perform well in the box office. Maybe that’s good so we don’t get another sequel to ruin the incredible good work from the last two movies.

"You look like a good Joe," is one of the best lines in sci-fi cinema. Never fails to tear me up.
I have yet to see a film by Denis Villeneuve I didn't immediately adore. Perfect choice of a director to do a sequel to one of my all-time favorite movies. And I do like what Zimmer has done with the soundtrack. Personally, while I love the score - it's doesn't quite do the same for me as Vangelis with his perfect Cyberpunk ambience. Of course Zimmer is a giant for very good reasons - and he has done a very good job following up to one of my favorite scores. Zimmer's is definitely more contemporary, thus there's less to potentially take you out of the moment if you're not used to it.
Anyway - shoutout to Vangelis. It was a huge loss for the world of music when passed last year.
Denis is arguably the best director in the 21st century, certainly one of the best directors of the 21st century. Almost all of his movies are milestone achievements.
I agree, Luv is horrifying, but I absolutely love her last line as she's stepping back into the ocean
This is such a good story. A clever mystery, universal philosophical themes that raise real questions, and a lesson more than one generation of young men should have heard before this movie: "Sometimes, it's not your story."
Its crazy to think. He is meeting his dauther 30 years later. I would bet its the best freaking day of his life beside maybe when he met Rachael. Those 2 films are amazing.
K is such a tragic character. He's sad, lonely and just a tool for everyone else to use. It took me two rewatches to fully understand his relationship with Joi and that just added to how sad he is.
Watch it again. It's not a sad story. It's a story of redemption. Redemption of humanity, the soul, love.
K got exactly what he wanted, to feel alive, to feel more than just a slave to his programming.
Him and Joi, through their selfless sacrifices, they displayed what it means to care. They discovered true purpose.
When K puts her into the choke at the end, so pumped.

This is so much more enveloping than the original and actually expands on the themes and messages posited in the first. It's the greatest sequel ever made this side of the 2010s. My favourite film by far for a long time and I've watched a lot of films.
It is undeniably a great movie and sequel but never even touches the classic, original Ridley Scott film.
It makes me happy that you enjoyed this film, cuz it was immediately apparent to me after i watched it that i had found a mainstay in my Top 10. It deserves all the praise and adulation it gets, and i will fight anyone who asserts otherwise. Villaneuve is a goddamn visionary and he did right by this soft reboot/sequel.

This masterpiece was tied for my favourite film with The Departed the moment i finished it. The visuals, dialogue, score, acting, themes and colour pallet were 10/10
A MASTERPIECE of a movie this is. As an Industrial Designer my self, Blade Runner saga it's my favorite of ALL. AMAZING!

I'd really encourage you to try "Oblivion" with Tom Cruise. Also very surreal SF and a great story.

Easily the best sequel ever made, and one of the rare sequels that is actually better than an already great first movie.
Gosling is so good in this movie. If you want to see him in a comedy role you should check out "The Nice Guys" it's amazing.

Luv's character is so insanely good. Silvia went balls to the wall with her performance. Her "WHERE IS HE?" felt mechanical and bone-chilling in the theatre. I didn't even know line delivery like that was possible.
This movie didn't do it for me, but Maple's Scifi Era does. There are SO MANY EARTH-SHAKERS for her to see! Keep them coming!!! SCIFI ERA!!!!!
So has anyone mentioned yet that Tyrell Corporation is in direct competition with Weyland-Yutani? Also Ridley Scott mentioned the link betwen Bladerunner, Alien and Legend movie with Tom Cruise.
An amazing film. I didn’t think a sequel could be made that would do justice but it does. I still have minor gripes, like it looks too clean. Wish they’d tried harder to meld it more visually with the first film… but of course it still looks incredible of course. The sound and music are phenomenal. The misdirection with K/Joe was just heartbreaking. I remember going in thinking are we going to spend the whole film wondering if Gosling’s character was a replicatant or not, and then they tell us in the first 5 minutes that he is one, but then layer on all this extra backstory and take us on his journey to an explanation. And in the end he chooses, not what he was told to do, but what he knew was the right thing to do, to hell with either side. The most “human” thing he could have done. And he pays the ultimate price to reunite Deckard with his daughter. There’s just soo much subtle emotion going on. Of course the film didn’t perform great at the box office (the original was pretty niche itself at time of release) but my god are we so lucky to have this film in existence.

I know it wouldn't probably pull in the numbers of the big reaction vids, but I'd love to see a end-of-year recap stream with the girls going over what they loved watching in 2023. It could even be a patron thing, I'd shift my subscription budget to see you lead Maple and Arianna in a free discussion of what they've seen and what they've liked.
I love how emotional Maple was with this story, it’s an incredible sequel. Maybe the best ever. Villenueve was the perfect director for this, his appreciation for the source material is what makes it work so well.
In a couple of months the next movie of Villeneuve will be released. Dune P2! Im gonna watch it in IMAX. Gonna be EPIC!

I agree with you, it's controversial but I think Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best sequels in sci-fi and I honestly think it's better than the original!!
Sadly the marketing of this film made it seem like something it wasn't so many people watched the movie not understanding that it wasn't some high action film but a pretty heavy introspective drama. Much like the first film. Though fans of the first film got exactly what they wanted. I believe this movie will have the same fate as the first - To be mostly glossed over initially then appreciated many years later for how good it is.
I think the most tragic moment, other than K’s death, was when K saw the Joi ad. “Everything you want to see, everything you want to hear.” And the hologram called him “a good Joe.”
And in that moment he knew his Joi was never real. Just AI.
Luv liked K, even though she was bad, and competitive with him. It angered her that he loved something fake, but cared not for her, for Luv. She smashed the emanator out of anger-But I think also, to cure K of his delusion.
Remember she spared K in Vegas. She in a twisted way, meant a kindness.
Yeah it was interesting, they could have gone the "her" route where you got a sense that, even though the AI was in a relationship with thousands of other people, she/it did have the ability to have a sincere relationship with Joaquin's character, whereas Bladerunner goes the other route. That's my take anyway.
You're not wrong. This was unfairly panned by almost everyone. This is an excellent follow up to the first movie.

By the end. He'd lost his job something that made him feel a purpose something that Made him feel normal
He lost the idea he was human and could have a destiny, that he was anything other than a Replicant.
And he lost not only joi but realized she had adapted her program to him she was truly just a machine, so he lost the idea of love or it possibility. At the end he truly had nothing left
This is a top ten movie of the past ten years imo. The style, the story, action, mystery, emotion, this movie lacks for nothing.
God damn this movie is wonderful. I know we had high expectations because of the OG film. This film can stand alone as a great film.
11:12- First time I heard that Elvis song was because of this movie.
I think it's an interesting take on the futuristic sci-fi genre that in this world they have human-like artificial intelligence but instead of making legitimate AI androids and sexbots and whatnot they instead have made artificial life, and it's still separate from AI. e.g. Joi is an AI but they haven't developed human-like android cyborgs yet so that you can have a physical Joi, but you can have a physical artificial being, a replicant. It's quite a bit orthogonal to futuristic sci-fi stories like Terminator where machines got smart and made themselves better and better, especially at killing humans, infiltrating by looking more and more human, but still fully mechanical - then even developing liquid metal machines, nanobot machines... No replicants though, no artificial organisms.
Honestly one of the best sequels ever. This and Dune I really feel like sci fi is making a comeback. I feel like comedy is next

Great reaction. So glad that you “get it”! This is one of few sequels that arguably outperform the original. And such a beautiful, lonely story that asks What Makes A Person? I feel so sad for the robot that finds a human connection with a hologram. And sad that our reality is not far from that.
Denis is a master. Watch Dune or Sicario, or Prisoners!

The cast is so good top to bottom as well. Even is smaller or just less verbose roles they got awesome people.
- Sylvia Hoeks performance as Luv is beautiful and terrifying in a way I have never seen done so perfectly before. I also felt sympathy for her, as really she is just a horribly damaged person. With father figure like Wallace, meat or machine, you are going to turn out poorly
- Dave Bautista made Sapper a great character in a very few scenes. I am happy he is focusing more on his acting now. He is fun as the big muscly archetype he has been playing GotG but he has more range I hope people like Denis Villeneuve give him a chance to branch out.
- MacKenzie Davis is my para-social crushy, obsession, I have no objectivity with her, but she is just so effective, again in a just a few scenes.
I heard that when they first started planning the film, Denis wanted to have Wallace played by David Bowie that would have been amazing. Sad he died before that could be realized but Jared Leto was really menacing and creepy in the part.
There are some Web shorts that add to the story and I think there was an animated series as well. Watch the shorts in the order they were released or you can find a compilation but I think the quality from the WB YT is better. Links below.

The child has DNA disorder, locked in a sterile chamber at 8 due to immune issues. Ergo, a replicant birthing a child isn't a regular person, it's something else, and doesn't have a proper immune system to survive.
OK I see now what they were doing. She was supposed to be like the 2049 version of Daryl Hannah’s character. I didn’t see that parallel before.

I like the story. It's written by Hampton Fancher who wrote the original too. It has many call backs to the original. But I miss the old Blade Runner world. This looks too clean and empty. It's not cyberpunk. And the music is nowhere near the Vangelis score of the original.
