Maurizio Pollini, piano
April 25, 1974
Tokyo, Tokyo Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan
(At the end of this piano recital, Schumann’s "Arabeske, Op. 18" was performed as an encore, but unfortunately I do not have it, sorry...)
It looks like Maurizio likes to play in Japan. People know how to listen there…
How many of today's pianists can be recognized in a few seconds just by sound? R.I.P.
For Pollini, piano is not just a piano. It is an orchestra.
I heard him live in 2009. My jaw kept dropping throughout the entire recital.
Definitely! His touch remains unique and with a true signature.
He was at his prime here, and there was no one who would touch him. Flawless technique and great passion.
No one? Ashkenazy, for one.
I had no idea what a brilliant musician he was at this age. The Chopin preludes reveal a maturity of understanding of rubato and inner voices that other great keyboard artists do not have. I now rank Pollini among the top 5 pianists of all time based on this performance, among Horowitz, Hofmann, Schnabel, and Rachmaninoff. Who disagrees?
I do
@@edhanslick5630 So where do you rank Pollini if not top 5?
@@astrasfo You can´t rank pianists in one list. There are different characteristics for roughly each generation. How would you rank
Josef Hofmann against Yuja Wang ? Therefore it is not possible to talk about "all times". In case of Pollini we can talk about generation of pianists born approx. after 1940 like Argerich, Barenboim, Watts, Perahia, Uchida, Ohlsson, Zimerman, Sultanov, Andsnes, Kissin, Lugansky up to Lang Lang, Yujja Wang or Yunchan Lim. Here you can compare their tone quality, technic, musicianship, and so on. After that comes your personal taste
(based on your knowledge, experience ...). From here you can continue.
I myself would have hard time to fit Pollini among five of those.
I still rank Pollini above most of those you mentioned. Based on a variety of criteria, including technique, musicality, singing tone, Etc. Not everyone will agree with me of course. I recently heard Benjamin Grosvenor live at the Kennedy Center. He simply blew me away with his fabulous technique and musicianship. We live in a golden age of pianists
28.22 is so great, perfect follow up with 23 and 24
Thank you Maestro, rest in peace.
Grazie di ❤ per questo meraviglioso video!
Immenso Maurizio Pollini!
RIP amatissimo Maestro🙏
In 1974, Maurizio Pollini first came to Japan. Since then, he has visited Japan 20 times in total 🇮🇹🎶🇯🇵
Thank you for sharing/ R.I.P. 🙏
Straordinario.
Unbelievable.
And this was all played in a single
recital. Such a generous sharing of
life, energy, and music. Thank you, Jun. This is unforgettable.
for posting this.
Fa paura questo programma e tutto è suonato in maniera divina
Admirable ! Pollini ´s perfect playing is filled with emotion, enthusiasm and incredible energy. What extraordinary and moving concert ! Thank you !
Thank you very much Mr. Kumazawa.
Absolutely incredible energy and virtuosism.
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful concert!! The musical tension of the whole recital, from the very first note to the last,is just amazing! I never experience something like that,Pollini was,is,and always will be a unique and amazing artist!!
He fills my heart with an indefinable emotion , involves me from the first to the last note .
I’m so sorry I haven’t posted for a long time. I’ll be busier in the future, but I will keep posting steadily. Thank you very much for your sincere comments. Glad you have enjoyed this to the fullest ☺️

Fantastic concert! Thank you so much for posting. And the best Ballade I have ever heard from Pollini
Thank you too for your listening! Yes, the Ballade is miraculous…
La Ballata in sol minore come bis :) Concerto splendido, programma spaziale, fortunato il pubblico
I like Pollini's playing at that time so much more than how he plays now. Thank you for sharing this wonderful recording.
You’re very welcome 😌
I also do, Pollini was a miracle of nature back then. Steel fingers. But no robotic feelings at all, the passion of a young player at its fullest. And without the hystrionics of so many young and not-so-young players of today, who try to be 'romantic' and most of the times merely sound ridiculous.

I am only discovering this now,
this year. The playing here is out
of this world. It is a privilege to be
able to listen...and to be in conversation with those who have
heard so much more!
When I go to a recital, it is because
I can trust the artist's respect for the
composer, his or her own inner
listening. No matter how many yeard

Wonderful performance.
Listen to his 3 last Schubert Sonatas. Unsurpassible interpretation.
Grazie Maestro
Ballade 1 as a encore 😱

Strange how Pollini was already sterile, flat and dry, even when he was young.
The Wanderer-Fantasy becoming a Boring-Fantasy as well.
