When we expressed fear at going through the cemetery, as children, our Mother would always say "The dead cannot hurt you, just be afraid of the living".

πνεῦμα (Pneuma) in ancient Greek means breath, wind, air, spirit, soul or consciousness. "Holy Spirit would have been a much better translation.
The word used for 'ghost' in the gospels is "φάντασμα" (fantasma).

My mother was Irish Catholic, and she saw ghosts. My grandfather died when she was 15, and she knew he had died before they got the call. Then a long while later, she felt somebody sitting on the end of her bed, thinking it was her dog, she opened her eyes and her dad was sitting there, she blinked and he was gone. I always asked her what did he look like? Did he look see-through like we imagine ghosts, she said no, he looked normal. So anyway, a lot of ghostly things happened, other people saw his figure and doors opened for people. Years later, when I was born my mum had a dream about him and he said he was sorry for how he treated everybody. And my mother woke up crying, she cried for the whole weekend she even went to the doctor about it, why she couldn't stop crying lol. I always think he lingered as a ghost because he knew he behaved badly to the family in life, and then was brave enough to face what he did and received spiritual cleansing when apologising in the dream. That is only one story, I have so many others of my mum experiencing dreams, ghostly things. When her sister died, she told my mum a week before that she had a dream three very very tall people were at the end of her bed, and she said 'are you my guardian angels' and they nodded, and then she asked them if she was going to die and they nodded. She died of a brain hemmorage. And before that, years before, the same aunty was in a coma and my mum dreamed she was goign to wake up, even though the priest had come by then. She did wake up and the preist said 'i never thought i'd live to see the living dead' lol, and my mums vision of her sister walking down the steps in her dream came true, even the wig and walking stick... and my aunty told my mum she was in desert place, loads of people lining up in white shawls, and my aunty pushed forward asking to be let in the gates, and a man said, 'not you it's not your time' and pushed her back, then she woke up, is that weird or what? my mum didnt ask for any of these gifts, and she became very sad when her other sister died and she experienced nothing ghostly other than two dreams...
one time 2008, my mum was sick in hospital and dreamed of her two deceased sisters and they pushed a cake towards her in the dream. the next day the woman sharing the hospital room came in with the exact same cake. my mum didnt tell me this because she thought it would freak me out, but she told my older cousin because my mum was worried her sisters were coming to get her aka she was dying lol. luckily for me it wasnt her time yet, she passed in 2014.
so what would the church make of those stories. my mum passed in 2014
I heard through the years that when somebody dies suddenly they can linger as they are still connected to the earthly realm. i think that could make sense.

I think the Catholics are right about purgatory and that to me would explain Ghosts...those who do not want to go 'higher' to Heaven or fear going elsewhere, or even just those who are as the bible puts it 'in love with the world' and want to stay in their comfort of Planet Earth... that's why you get stories of hauntings in old homes...maybe people just want to stay in their safetynet of their own little world.
Maybe purgatory isn't just a place to purge your sin but also a state of mind after leaving the body...maybe it's in this earthly realm or just above it... that's why some of us have ghostly experiences, because those who have died linger between the two realms of afterlife and physical life...that's why people say they see a white tunnel of warmth in NDE's, they can also see their body laying lifeless and their room etc... even james randi the skeptic had an Out of Body experience and rose up to his ceiling and his cat looked up at him... but he denies it was anything but a dream lol... even when god gives him a glimpse of how wrong he was, he still denied! "ye of little faith!"
i think perhaps people who are having NDE's or maybe those who die can go through the white light while some choose to linger around...It seems so according to stories.

If Harry Potter is un-Catholic as it depicts magic, then surely the Lord of the Rings would be un-Catholic for the same reason, only that the Lord of the Rings is widely acknowledge as one of the most Catholic fictional works ever written.

@@ccityplanner1217 you'll note I implied that Harry Potter is different from a grimoire. I hold that Harry Potter is an excellent primer on moral theology. I am Catholic all my life (59yrs). I have experienced the paranormal in my parent's house, and definitely human spirits in my present house. I went to Catholic school in the 1970's, and we were not taught the faith very well at all. I cautiously confided in lady from the Legion of Mary what was going on, and she taught me the prayer of St. Michael. All the paranormal events stopped immediately. When I moved into my late Victorian house, after about 6 months, I began to be invaded. A visitor saw the apparitions of 3 or 4 children in the back bedroom. I heard a male voice call my name. I heard people and loud crashes in other parts of the house. I saw several ghosts (they looked like 3 dimensional shadows). Much more happened. My parish priest did not know how to deal with it, and he never visited my house. My Oma gave me blessed salt, and I did my own ad hoc blessing, or cleansing. Nothing happened downstairs. When I went up the stairs and reached the top, I felt strong energy. It was emotional and you could feel it. I continued with the blessing, and thankfully, 'it' or 'they' left and I had peace. About 3 years later, it started up again. My little chihuahua seemed to see it all the time and was very frightened and hid all the time. I decided to have a talk with it when I heard it in the corner of my bedroom. I said that it cannot stay in my house, told it to go to the light and not come back. I said my house belonged to Jesus. It worked and thank God very little has happened since then. I am a bit disappointed that I had to figure this out myself. BTW, my house was blessed by Fr. Joe R. when I moved in. And unlike ghost stories you read, I have no idea who they were or why they were here. Also, ghostly events would happen in broad daylight, to me, to visitors, even the neighbors were aware (Do you know you have ghosts?) They did too, i was told.

Well, from what it seems they went with prayers away, so maybe (and just maybe because I'm not sure. I didn't have much experience with this) they're spirits from purgatory.
Someone in my family said she saw once a shadow. First she was afraid and prayed the rosary. The shadow left after that.
Since then she prayes in every mass for the spirits in purgatory.
If they're spirits from the purgatory, you can still pray for them in mass and offer masses for them (even if they're not at home anymore).

It's a counterfeit illusion by Satan. You are wishy washy in your Faith or you would not have these experiences. You are maybe subconsciously wanting this to happen so Satan steps in. The Bible teaches the dead do nothing.

In the St. Louis Archdiocese there is an office named Catholic Renewal Center. They get calls to investigate the presence of "lost souls." An example that Jane Guenther, the director shared, was a "ghost" in a house that was recently purchased. The previous owner was a person killed in Afghanistan. Documents pertaining to his military career mysteriously appeared on the threshold. A Mass was celebrated in the home. At the moment of consecration, Guenther heard the words, "Thank you." and the homeowner felt the oppression lifted.
And I have a personal story.
My father was 23 in 1943. He had two brothers away in the war. One night while he was asleep he woke up to see his brother, Walter, in his army uniform standing at the foot of his bed. Walter said, “I’m in trouble. I need you to pray for me.” My Dad got out of bed, knelt down and said an Our Father. A couple of nights later he saw Walter again. This time he was glowing and said, “I’m alright now.”
About a week later, a telegram arrived from the government informing the family that Walter’s plane had gone down in the Mediterranean Sea. No survivors.

In Asia, we have lots of Catholics sharing ghost stories during slumber parties. The military ones were exceptionally scary for those of us who are unfortunate enough to be born in places where we needed to be mandatorily conscripted. More so when we were separated from our families and stationed in some offshore camp.
Edit to include a vivid personal experience:
I have also experienced three demonic nuns pressing me down and chanting something while stopping my breathing during a sleep paralysis event decades before the movie came out so I couldn't have been influenced by that. Wasn't able to open my mouth and had to recite The Our Father in my mind and my breath slowly came back and they flew up to the ceiling and disappeared. Might be a dream and sleep apnea, but I remembered being fully awake through it all. The sequence passed and I caught my breath and sat up. Only then did I start perspiring.

As a kid, maybe about 8, I saw a ghost, such as it was. A boy dressed in 1930s garb, carrying a box of apples. I saw him three days in a row, around 2 - 3am. I told my mum about him. Her very simple response was one of yours as listed. A soul from Purgatory whom God allowed to cross over just for a moment. My mum said to pray for him. I think it was a way of shutting down any child's wild imagination.
As a very Catholic kid, pondering the religious life believe it or not, I accepted it without any further thought. As an adult who has studied theology, I think it's rather sad, that there are folks in purgatory whose names are no longer recalled on Earth enough to pray for them.
Plus, whatever these things are, demons, imaginations, or real souls seeking prayer, maybe giving warning, praying for them will bring no harm.

I knew for years that Ouija boards are bad news! My mom bought an Ouija board just for fun when I and my brothers and sisters were children, but none of us took it seriously, assuming that it's just a game. It was given to me when I moved into my first apartment, but I threw it out while housecleaning. That's because I learned people actually try to communicate with spirits with it, and I learned that they could attract demons by trying to reach dead loved ones. If you miss deceased loved ones and try to reach them, don't do it, people! Just pray for their souls, and tell God you miss them.

Every once in a while we will be confronted on the streets by well meaning Christians who say we are supporting Satan or the Occult. I point out that we are merely entertainment and it is up to the listener to determine if the stories are real or make-believe.
When I have someone ask if I believe in ghosts I tell them that I am smart enough to know that I don’t know everything and I have seen evidence both ways.

If you've ever lived in a house that had a malevolent spirit hectoring the residents, you would know that, while you may not believe in ghosts/spirits, I can assure you that they believe in you. I was three years old and we had to move out.

"Cleansings" are pagan, and only make things worse! Take that as a truth, from a former newager! Such rituals call upon demons! A structure must be blessed, or even exorcised, before the demons leave. ALL malevalent spirits are demons.

I think the sensation of feeling the dead around us (when still close to their death) is the process of grieving. I felt it when my dad passed away during the pandemic.
As a charismatic Christian I also believe that angels and demons show up sometimes, I.e. God allows us to see them for some reason. I've experienced this before.
I'm not catholic, so don't know much about the purgatory or any possible connection between us and them. But I think your explanation made sense.

    • @hayleybartek8643
      @hayleybartek8643 7 месяцев назад

Purgatory stems from two logical ideas. First, the idea that nothing impure can enter Heaven. But how pure is "pure?" If a person is saved, but told a few white lies and never admitted it or apologized, are they truly pure? Surely they do not go to Hell because they are saved, but neither can they enter Heaven since they are not truly pure. So we have Purgatory, a place where the saved can be purified of all the smaller sins that can be forgiven and atoned for. Second, the idea that we are called to pray for the dead. Why bother? The dead in Heaven have no need of prayers, and no prayers can reach the damned. Who are we praying for? There must be a third place where such prayers would matter.

    • @richardmh1987
      @richardmh1987 7 месяцев назад +2

@@hayleybartek8643 don´t forget that while God is infinitely mercyful, he is also a God of justice. Whenever you are forgiven for your sins you also need to do reparations from those sins.
Best example I´ve heard was that if a kid is playing and breaks a window from his neighbor house, he must go and apologize to his neighbor and make sure he doesn´t break any other window. However, the damage is already done, so what would be best is that once he apologizes, he pays for the window or at least go help to install the replacement. That is the reparation, and if you don´t make reparations from your sins while you´re alive, you will do them in purgatory.
And, just like that kid´s father might very well go to the neighbor, once his son has apologized, and offer to pay for the window instead of his son, who might not have money himself, a living person can pray to God for another person in purgatory so his time there is shortened.

I have had several experiences myself as well. 3 months after my mother passed on, I was woken up at 3 AM by a windup music box playing in the living room down a long hallway. I got up and slowly walked down the hall and as I turned to look at it, it stopped. There was no way it can be wound up and not immediately play either. I knee it was my mom checking up on me. My mom promised to always look after me before she passed. ❤❤❤❤

Question Friar. On the Nicene Creed it was mentioned that God the Almighty Father "maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible" does it include Ghost? because we cannot physically see them but the Scriptures mention the usage of Ghost in describing supernatural beings like after the Resurrection of Jesus when He appeared on the apostles, they got scared in seeing a ghost.
In the diary of St Faustina at St Padre Pio they mentioned that they were visited by souls from purgatory asking for prayers.
And is there a distinction between Ghost and Soul? Because somehow we have the context that Ghost are Scary and Soul are a part of the Human spirit.
Hoping for your Response Fra. Pace e Bene

A well done video. Mostly I agree with Tertullian and Augustine regarding ghosts. That being said the Witch of En Dor from 1 Samuel 28 is a different case than that. 1 Samuel 28 seems to state in this instance God is allowing the actual spirit of Samuel to come up from Abraham's Bosom, or Hades to tell Saul what his fate is going to be. To me it indicates that God can do what He wants to do. One of my favorite stories about ghosts, is Charles Dickens, "The Christmas Carol." Those would be a special type of Ghosts, to wake up the Scrooges of the world.

Going to mediums, psychics, card readers, etc., and living your life by what they say is extremely dangerous, I agree, though, I have in the past gone to a psychic for the heck of it to hear what she had to say. Interestingly, she mentioned a problem I was having with a door. I didn't know what she was getting at. She said she couldn't be any more specific. Now I should mention that I went with my cousin, and he drove. When he dropped me off at my house, we agreed to go to dinner and that I would drive. When I went to go to my car, naturally, I tried to enter by the driver's side. Wasn't going to happen as the door was damaged by an accident that happened only the day before going to the psychic. I had forgotten about that. How could she have known? Crazy, huh?

But I do believe in them. I am just not scared because regardless of what they are, I'm more interested in serving God than indulging morbid curiosity.
The problem with things like medians and Ouiji boards is that to use them seriously expecting a result, you must have faith in them. Faith in God protects us from evil, but if we put that faith elsewhere, we weaken that defense. It doesn't matter if the alternative is totally powerless we are weakening out defense again things that DO exist, like demons. So "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."

I personally believe the dead can come to us in dreams or in signs under the authority of the Holy Spirit. My mother came to me in a dream but only her voice for she was behind a shroud. Her words were for me to know God's great love for me. This was during a time in my life I was struggling. Having said that, I believe most ghost and spirit encounters are evil entities looking to deceive, confuse and ultimately destroy.

I’ve a fourth theory on ghosts, especially those that don’t seem malevolent, but have rather decided to stick around to either guard a place or as a warning.
Humans are given free will by the Holy Spirit, so it stands to ‘reason’ that sometimes when a person dies, especially if they had a strong sense of duty in life, they may decide to stick around or ‘cross between worlds’ instead of completely crossing over, and continue watching over something or someone.
There are a lot of stories of intelligent (that is ‘interactive’) of ghosts of servicemen keeping an eye on various military forts or locations.

I think it would have been worthwhile to discuss the very real, and rational concept of mental illness. You don't have to experience psychosis like I have to experience something that comes across ghostly or seemingly supernaturally unsettling. Severe anxiety, stress, snd cultural concepts alone are sufficient to hsve some strange experiences.
Psychosis is definitely more dramatic. I've experienced some weird stuff and it's left me with, of all things, a fear of the moon.

We must be careful to use the supplementary. These were not written by St Thomas by compiled after his death by his friend Fra Rainaldo da Piperno, on Thomas’ writings on the Fourth Book of the Sentences of Peter Lombard. This was when St Thomas was under 30 and his theology clearly evolved massively from this point as evidenced by some suspect parts such as TP, Q[62], A[1]; also Q[43], A[3], ad 2 of the Supplement.
Generally speaking we only use the supplementary when it is strongly supported by other writings of esteemed theologians.
