At 14.45 , who remembers John Gilmore ? He had two horse drawn petrol tankers and was Newberry's rat catcher. The real beauty of this bit of film is that the old boys doing the jobs were reliving what they did when they were young men. I was 14 when this film was made, my father had the Wheelwrighting exhibition and my sister had the Victorian clothes collection all in a big marquee. my father was Fred Stubbings my sister was Libby Stubbings, both no longer with us along with many of those wonderful characters like Beano Hill Henry Fry John Pocock Micheal Oliver Edward Hines Doc Romanes and many more. STOURPAINE BUSHES were the best rallies , there was a certain magic about those early days.
Many thanks for this wonderful memory. I was 13 then and this brings back many happy thoughts. Sad that all those I attended with are now gone, plus at least 50% of those in the film. Back then you spoke to old engine drivers who had actually worked engines and got solid interesting answers to your boyhood questions, now even the first generation of restorers are mostly gone. Today if one asks a question you often get a "don't know" or "you will have to ask the man who looks after it for me" it is great that rich people preserve our history but much that was good has been lost in these 40+ years that have flown by too fast. I cringe seeing some of the antics that go on around show grounds today.
I was sixteen and just started in engineering. it was another 7 years before i had the chance to visit Stourpaine Bushes and what a great day out. it was. I have been to the Great Dorset many times and had a good time and met a lot of interesting people involved with steam engines and other vintage machines ect. Now I have less then 2 years to go before I retire, where have the last 48 years gone? Many thanks for this wonderful film it takes you back
... wow! So pleased to have stumbled upon this ... an excellent film that makes me feel like I was there! Fabulous quality and colour (Kodachrome?) ... fascinating to get a glimpse of the wooden sign for the ‘1905 Hornsby Ackroyd [sic] Lamp Oil Engine’ as I spotted that only last week at the 51st GDSF ... the layout in 1970 was clearly a bit more ‘organic’ than today, with the punters allowed to get close up to the exhibits and action ... health & safety now intervenes ... thanks for sharing this - great stuff! ...
some years back Me and my Dad saw a portable flour mill being powered by a hot air engine during one of our visits to the Great Dorset steam fair. I think its the same one shown here
great film looking to see if I recognised any of the faces in the crowd cos we lived at Fontmell Magna at the time and attended the very first Steam fair back in 69 and to think I thought it was big enough then
Great film, i'm sure most if not all these engines survive? although i can't remember seeing the last 3 that were ploughing at the end of the film, certainly not at the great dorset , perhaps i will see them some time in the future?
Surprisingly many reg numbers on these vehicles are not recorded on DVLA reg checker and its sad to say events with steamers are under threat with the end of coal pending
