Born with Spina Bifida and will be 35 next month, had weight issues most of my life but intermittent fasting with eating 1400 calories has allowed me to lose weight fast and maintain
Nice one of the biggest things i've learned is you have to find what works specifically for you and whats going to be sustainable for you. There are a lot fades and stuff out there but in the end its pretty simple calories in vs calories out and making sure you get enough of the good stuff mixed in with the calories in part!
Hey Michelle how are things going for you? I know it can be difficult and frustrating sometimes. I have gained a lot of weight during pandemic when I had limited to access to a gym, increased boredom and other stressors, but don't give up and keep trying stuff
Good job! I've been a paraplegic for 53 years as a result of a car accident when I was 20. I have worked at keeping my weight down by swimming and eating healthy. You are right about persistence! It pays. During Covid when the pool was closed, I found online aerobics and yoga for wheelchair users. It has helped bring down my cholesterol. Keep up the good work!
I like your advice so much, especially about "being persistent if you can't be perfect". I have peripheral polyneuropathy and I'm temporarily on a wheelchair. I've always been worried about not being able to lose weight because I have limited mobility. But your video has changed my perspective. 😁
@@AdaptedAdventures It's ok. I'm doing great now! Managed to lose some weight and gain some strength. It's still work in progress, but I'm proud of my achievement. 😁
So glad I found this! I couldn't find any info on how fewer calories someone with spina bifida should generally have. Though my own estimations and trial and error, I was right on the mark even though my GP told me I should be eating more.
So glad I found your channel my son was diagnosed with a spinal when he was 16 and is paraplegia incomplete. Really need an exercise program for him so he can lose, what is your story.
Diet is going to be the most important thing with only using half our bodies our calorie necessities are surprisingly reduced! For example I am 5'4 weigh 223lbs and my calorie needs to maintain are only about 1500 a day!
Hi I have a question could you do a workout video/ tutorial? Just because I also have spine a Bifida and I haven’t found any workouts that work for me.
so let me just start by saying i am not expert by any means!! there are two things I have found that seem to be about right maybe lol, and they give different numbers, but admittedly it sometimes has to be a little bit of trial an error. With that said, I had a dietician share with me once that she found info that said basically that in order to maintain your weight that your caloric intake should be around 7-11 calories per centimeter of height depending on activity. She was specifically referencing for paraplegics, so I am not sure how this would translate over to other impairments, but it might be a good place to start? Again not a pro at this by any means, and during the pandemic i admittedly gained a lot of weight back but now I'm moving in the right direction again!
@@gareddore2703 haven’t been so good lately. I have a full plate and a lot of stress lately. I hope to get things figured out soon and get back on track. I hope to buy my own set of weights and do my workouts from home soon.
Hey @djwheels66 how's your workout routine going? I know it can be tough to stick with it when life gets hectic. Try to find a way to do something active everyday even if it's not the perfect workout or an hour long or whatever, but something just to keep ya going! baby steps are still steps!
Hey Brian I actually went to a weight loss/control clinic, and it was one at a hospital not like jenny craig or medifast. I met with a dietician there and told her I was specifically looking for information on caloric needs for people with spina bifida and after some research she was able to find some stuff for me. Theres not a lot out there to begin with so that makes it tough. Also, im not sure where you are located but here in the Twin Cities there is a clinic that all the doctors specialize in adult care for people with spina bifida, cp, and other types of those disabilities. If you could find a clinic like that in your area I am confident that those people would have a better grasp of this type of thing than your everyday dietician.
@@AdaptedAdventures Hey Kasey! I live in Arlington Heights (NW Suburbs of Chicago) and I have to go to Chicago for the Spina Bifida clinic that only meets once a month and most times not all the doctors are there. We dont have a clinic that specializes in every disability. Thank you for getting back to me!
Hey sorry i didn't annunciate to well in the video haha, 7-9, not 79 so for me I'm 5'4 or 162 cm so my caloric intake should be ABOUT 1100-1200 calories a day depending on activity levels
I'm so glad you talked about your handcycle! It's actually the only exercise I do these days! (That sounds really bad, but I am out on my handbike at least 4 times a week whatever the weather!) I have mentioned this before in a previous video, but I've just come across something called the Grit Freedom Chair which looks really good. www.gogrit.us

Yea, be careful because I’m definitely not a trained dietician or expert in any way shape or form 😂, but I’ve also had my GP tell me the same thing
Have you had the chance to try Parafencing? It’s basically intervals of physical and mental exercise that will leave you soaked in sweat.
I can't say that i've tried that before! Sounds interesting though!
