+Jake S. Del Mastro It's definitely something to master. When I was younger and started to get into collecting vinyl records, I was quite the impulsive buyer. Then adult responsibilities became a thing and I was starting to really cutting back (I'm still working on it)
I work at a goodwill. You're genuinely gonna see a lot more variety of stuff on the sales floor when the weather is great. We make way more money and get way more donations when it's warmer outside. The weather has gotten so much better in fact that we got a nice little Roland synth as a donation.
So glad to see another episode of thrifts, this series has special memories for me as i used to watch them with my late father. This is the first one i watched on my own
My condolences as well. When I was little, my dad and I would watch old episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series and The Next Generation together. Those are good memories.
I didn't expect to find it in your videos, but have been trying to remember the musical keyboard from my childhood. Because of your video I can now acquire it again - the Casio SK-1. Thank you!!!! Great channel all around!
As someone who remembers the 70s, I can tell you that that "pea olive green" was called "avocado"... not to be confused with "harvest gold"... the only two colors available for appliances in the 70s. :-)
I don't know why this series makes me feel so warm and comfortable. The music, your lively narration, the old products, the sun. It's all just perfect. Thank you Clint !
"I do not understand seasons anymore." Same here. We got a bunch of snow at night here in Leeds just completely out of nowhere, then in the afternoon all of it melted and it was sunny and warm.
I'm so jealous of all the Goodwills you have in your area. Here in Germany there's nothing even remotely comparable. All we have are second hand clothing shops and garage sales.
OMG FUCK cutting matte board for framing pictures. I could never do that for some reason. Things written by a photography professor on the grading rubrics for my matte prints: "Matte board chewed by rabid wolverines" "Matte board cut with a rusty chainsaw while drunk" "Matte board rough hewn from the bones of the damned" Seriously he was one of my favorite professors.
That's actually a fungus that has grown on the inside of the lens. It's a bummer to have and difficult to "repair" and just happens to some old lenses, even nice ones.
Clint, when you find something you like and you say "Yeah, but not at that price" can you ask a staff member if you can buy it for a different, more reasonable price that you nominate? Also, I have worked for a thrift store for 3 years, and the amount of stuff that goes through the sorting department where one person thinks an item is junk, I might scoop it up and buy it for $5 or so, and end up saving something from the garbage grinder. I have scooped up Commodore 64s, Amigas, I got a 1965 ibanez bass guitar, etc. So it might be worth your while volunteering to work in the sorting department 1 day a week... Other people have found cash, diamonds, gold jewellery, an edison phonograph, and huge quantities of deisgner brand name jeans and other trendy clothing. I picked up my entire wardrobe of designer label clothing, for a grand total of $0.... + a days work.
My biggest problem with Goodwill is that their prices are just all over the place! Two hundred bucks for a Selectavision CED machine? That's INSANE, even with what looks like a pretty good selection of discs. They didn't work that well when new! In 1993 I bought out an entire rental selection from an RCA dealer who tried going into rentals and still had them. Well over 200 different discs plus two RCA Dealer Demo (ie Top of the line) machines. I think I paid around 200 for the entire thing back then. The machines had been cleaned and new stylii installed before I bought them as well. They worked about as well as any of those machines I ever saw, meaning "Not very". Still, was fun to be the only person I knew with them.
I had the same model Tascam recorder many moons ago. I still have the tapes I made with abstract synth and movie samples. Those Zenit SLRs are built like a T34-85. The mechanism is so so clunky Soviet (ka-chunk)
The salvation army thrift store near added a "scratched games" section. You know, in case you feel like taking home a severely scratched PS1 disc. I'd say the stores by you are slightly better lol. Great content as always.
Goodwill prices have become so bad these days. I remember when you could get such great deals in the 90s. I don't know what's gotten into them, maybe it's because thrift stores are "cool" now. I hit up Value Village these days better prices more random stuff.
Those waistband amplifiers were/are actually pretty darn handy for teachers. Teacher's have to speak with a very forward voice. Not *loud* per se, but strong. They're typically used when you have laryngitis, are otherwise losing your voice, or, for any other medical reason, can't speak loudly.
That Vivitar lens had me a little envious until you showed the lens. Those werent scratches, they were a fungus. Its the bane of camera collectors the world over and is caused by moisture making its way into the lens so the spores can grow. There are ways to remove it but its only worth it if the lens is collectible. Like those giant white telephoto lenses you used to see photographers using on the sidelines of sports events. The ones that were so long they had their own bipod and were so expensive that in one notable instance the company gave you a free car when you bought one.
Wanted to say that the sampling keyboard, too. But turns out he actually did a video on one (although not a full review, I guess). Pretty sure Autechre and some other electronic acts used modded/bent versions of those. Shame it's broken, although maybe someone curious would be able to fix it.
All who dare to step into the mighty Goodwill must first step on the Rock of righteousness to even get a Glimmer of luck in the place of the old forgotten or obsolete!
I'm not sure if I emailed you about this, but my buddy got a job at an old theater and they have some old tech they are getting rid of for whatever you will reasonably donate to them. Including an obscure dedicated monitor and a reel to reel projector. All working. Reply here if you message me so I know to log on via laptop and check messages.
I really enjoy this series, it’s very soothing- and it’s okay if you don’t get much of a haul at the end, it’s always cool to see these videos pop up in my feed :)
Great seeing these videos again. I live in Scotland and we've had a lot of snow and stormy weather here so I have'nt been thrifting since before Christmas. However, spring has sprung and I'll be out and about thrifting again soon :-)
He should start a service. When people see something in his video from Goodwill , they cannot get anywhere else, or cheap, he could buy it for them, and charge a fee for getting it, plus shipping
I've seen a few Kinect 360s at the local thrifts...usually around $14.99. But I was lucky enough to find one for an Xbox 1 a couple of months back at a Salvation Army for $7.99. Now if I could have similar luck in finding the power adapter for a PC without being charged an arm and a leg....
I paid around $15 for my Kinect 360 PC adapter, but the one I want for the XB1 Kinect MS ceased production on, and I haven't seen any 3rd-party XB1 adapters yet. And the MS adapter is going for crazy prices right now.
That Blasto jacket at the end, wow! I remember getting that game as a kid and loving it with all the risque humor, but then having my soul crushed by it's obscene difficulty.
I had one of those Casio SK1 keyboards back in the ‘80s. It was very cool for its day. Being able to sample a real sound and then use it in a musical type of situation was very novel for the ‘80s. Its sample-quality was surprisingly good for what it was.
And a "hidden feature" is you can set it right on top of a radio, tune around the dial, and get circuit bending noises. And that's without having to do any actual circuit bending stuff to it. Kind of fun to play with that way too.
3:29 we used to have one of those. It was a rather great unit. Worked as expected and no audio issues. It's now at the auto repair shop my stepfather works at as the shop radio.
I wouldn't mind finding a nice pair of pants that fits me, but unfortunately they aren't arranged by size, but by color. I don't understand why Goodwill does this.
Remember LGR I don't think anyone cares if you actually buy anything on your Thrift adventures. It's all just about seeing all the tat and hideous stuff they have in goodwills with your voiceover on top that makes the Thrifting episodes what they are. Great to watch.
I've actually had some great luck lately! Wolfenstein 3D for Mac, some G1 Transformers, Shogun Warrior and Mekenda robots from the 70's, a pile of Atari 2600 games. Real fun stuff.
Wahoo! Love this show, reminds me of all the crazy deals that I've managed to find at Goodwill over the (not recent) years. Looking forward to new episodes - keep up the good work!
The videodisc player was interesting, but I can guarantee that it wouldn't have worked unless someone already replaced the belts. Every single one I've come across that had the original belts, the belt just turned into a gooey mess. Not extremely unusual for the age now, but the first time I encountered it was the 90s. Also, since CEDs were more akin to records, if it didn't have a good stylus, it could tear through those old discs and make them unusable. Basically, if they had knocked a 0 off that price, it would have been a nice little piece to fix and show off, but at 200, there were just too many variables to make it worth it.
Love your videos. As I understand it, you're in NC. I'm in SC. Funny you thought it was warm. It was warm here too for about two days, now it's like 28 degrees at night. Don't like the weather? Live in the Carolinas: The weather will change every 10 minutes! LOL.
Awesome video. I love your commentary and I totally feel you on the mat cutter. I've framed and hung enough of my own shows to know why you were so pumped over it!
I have been watching these Thrift videos for ages and today, for the very first time, i realized that the Goodwill logo is not (only) half a smiley-face, but the lowercase letter G. Mind = Blown.
That JVC video play I use to use back in the day when I did disco and karaoke in my local pub. Great videos clit keep up the great work. Been subbed for 8 years now.
Always pick up cool scratched camera lenses for 25 or so bucks. The ones that are milky are junk, but the ones with some gouges are fine because people forget lenses do not focus on stuff that sits on top of the actual glass. Damage there is not actually that important to the lens' performance.
Same. Those have such massive boka, such low depth of field, unless you're about to touch the flower or the insect with the tip of your lens, no scratch will show up. I use a smashed Tamron 150-400 in macro mode, the cracked lens bit is too out of focus to be significant.
the one he was looking at didn't look scratched. the spiderweb pattern was a dead giveaway of lens fungus. it will keep getting worse until it is completely unusable.
I don't even live in the UK, but I'm aware of the different meaning... and I agree, THAT is not something that needs amplifying. Excuse me, now I need some brain bleach to try to wash these mental images out of my head. ;)
don't you guys call them bum bags? haha i'm from the u.s and i had a math teacher from wales in highschool. and he was shocked hearing the term for the first time.
To be honest, the term never made much sense to me, either. You wear them in the front, not where your fanny (bum) is. Waist pack makes more sense to me.
Thank you for looking at that pink flower thing at 2:49. It caught my attention before the radio and I was wondering what it was. It's like you knew that I had to know.
Even stranger they don't seem to do it for other media, if I remember right in a past video there was a VCR being sold that according to the label was a personal recording of somebody's birth
I love these episodes! Every time I watch them it makes me want to go to my local goodwill and find something awesome. Last time I went there I found an original NES controller and two NES games (Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt) as well as a brand new Logitech F310 gamepad. Now I'm itching to go to goodwill!
LGR that's fine. I like this show that way. It's a lot of fun. Too many tryhards on RUclips. I prefer authenticity and candidness. As long as the videos are interesting and entertaining, who cares
I never get sick of how you patiently wait behind your intro's text while it completes itself and then you say hi afterwords it's absolutely my favorite thing ever anywhere
I really admire your self control when thrifting, I find it really difficult to leave a thrift store without picking up any useless crap!
It's an acquired skill ;) Check my earliest episodes, there was _far less_ restraint!
I always try to find at least one noteworthy thing to grab but, sometimes, I turn up empty handed.

just wanted to say Clint comes across as one of the nicest people on RUclips

It's a great mystery to why I find these episodes so damned fascinating.
But I do, and I love it. :D
ooh my heart sank seeing that macro lens so scratched up :/ UVA/UVB filters everyone, always buy one, they're a very cheap way to protect your lenses!
It looked more like lens fungus to me
Not to mention the way the camera stuff was stored there in general. Probably made any photographer cringe a bit.
Best content on youtube at the moment hands down lol
You should have got the keyboard and sent it to the 8-bit guy
Even if you don’t buy everything, it’s so cool to see that old stuff! Love your thrifts vids!
Always pick up cool scratched camera lenses for 25 or so bucks. The ones that are milky are junk, but the ones with some gouges are fine because people forget lenses do not focus on stuff that sits on top of the actual glass. Damage there is not actually that important to the lens' performance.
Daniel van Slooten what about macro lenses?
Same. Those have such massive boka, such low depth of field, unless you're about to touch the flower or the insect with the tip of your lens, no scratch will show up. I use a smashed Tamron 150-400 in macro mode, the cracked lens bit is too out of focus to be significant.
Daniel van Slooten good to know! Thanks for the info
the one he was looking at didn't look scratched. the spiderweb pattern was a dead giveaway of lens fungus. it will keep getting worse until it is completely unusable.
This! I was looking for this comment.
HOORAY! This is one of my favorite series on this website!
It's thrifty.
Really love your Thrifting series! So entertaining!
Yea
Sorry but I literally laughed out loud when you said "Fanny pack amplifier". Fanny means something a little different in the UK.
ZipplyZane
yeah it really doesn't make sense tbh. even if you swithced it around it would be on your lower back not your fanny/bum ass lol.
its so you can hear all the queefs
Thank you for looking at that pink flower thing at 2:49. It caught my attention before the radio and I was wondering what it was. It's like you knew that I had to know.
I simply do not understand the policy of throwing away floppies.
I think it has to do with trying to protect the personal information of the people donating...
Hmmm, interesting point. but I still hate it lol.
Even stranger they don't seem to do it for other media, if I remember right in a past video there was a VCR being sold that according to the label was a personal recording of somebody's birth
@@ailenecalhoun7896 Oh JESUS. Why do people not CHECK these things?
I love these episodes! Every time I watch them it makes me want to go to my local goodwill and find something awesome. Last time I went there I found an original NES controller and two NES games (Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt) as well as a brand new Logitech F310 gamepad. Now I'm itching to go to goodwill!
I am pretty upset you passed on the Cheeseburger pillow, Not going to lie. :(
Hahaha, truly LAZY game reviews, didn't even bother updating the intro saying "It's February". I love this channel!
That's pretty normal for this show, I record episodes well in advance of them going online
LGR that's fine. I like this show that way. It's a lot of fun. Too many tryhards on RUclips. I prefer authenticity and candidness. As long as the videos are interesting and entertaining, who cares
