Being cheaper to emply because of exemption from CPF is not a "talent". Singapore is a country, not a company. Priority should be given to citizens like in other countries in eductation and for jobs. Singaporeans First. Always. Moreover, Singapore will have more talent if the % of each cohort that can have a local university education is not limited to a small minority. Uniquely Singapore. It is a knowledge based global economy. Singapore needs more local graduates even if they are a threat to political dominance of the ruling party.

Feel amazed that Dr Tan had raised this back in 1999
"Investors take careful note of our attitude towards foreign talent. In March this year, when the issue was raised in Parliament, we had a spirited debate. The International Herald Tribune reported it in a front page story [30 Mar]. It said that Singapore had always had a policy of welcoming foreigners, since the time of Stamford Raffles, until today, when rising unemployment prompted more Singaporeans to demand protection against foreign competition. It reported that Dr Tan Cheng Bock had raised the matter, and reflected what it called "a view that has found significant support among Singaporeans". It also quoted what Lee Hsien Loong, George Yeo and I had said in response, defending the Government's position. So IHT readers knew that the Singapore Government had not shifted its position.

Tan Cheng Bock has clarified with me that he had been misunderstood. He said that he was not against the import of foreign talent. He was only against our harping on it, especially during a recession, as this would cause us political problems."

foreign talent is pure gold, singapore doesn’t deserve it. america was greedily swiping any talent it comes across and putting it to good use. sg can continue screaming “ang mo go away” to the benefit of other countries.

Worse still, these foreigners are given PR status and citizenship.
    Its totally unnecessary.
They should be allowed to work as long as the organisation needs them and go back to their homeland after their contract.
Many China nationals who cant even speak english have become pr's and citizens.
Singaporeans are slowly loosing their place in this country

Our government creating more jobs for foreigners especially for Malaysians. They behind our back, criticise our country but yet come over to our country to get better opportunities better salary. In my company many Malaysians are promoted to higher positions, leaving Singaporean to take instructions from a Foreigners with Work Permit holder. For male Singaporean we served NS, yet a lot of us is overlooked by the company when it comes to upgrading and promotion. Singapore company following Singapore government leads of taking care of foreigners.

Dr Tan, accept it. They are making a big mockery of our two national Singapore's Universities of not matching up to the world's international standards. Then, all the while the educational standards must be one 'hell of a bull shitter'. Lousy lecturers get lousy graduates. Yet, you find so hard to gain admission into these universities. In conclusion, 'money speaks louder than words'.

FT is good for the country. The only problem is we need to create more jobs that are good for Singaporeans and have good pay. Can Singaporean play their part, from my Singaporean observations, we are not hungry enough and work harder than FT so how. These problems can not be solved overnight but allow the market forces to determine the capacities of Singaporean ethos. Singaporean must wake up to the world market. The world does not owe you a living. Fight for your place in the market.

We need foreigners in order to sustain our population and maintain a healthy workforce and dependents ratio. We need foreigners to do the jobs that Singaporeans are not willing to do. We also need foreigners to share their expertise on areas that we need help in.
Foreigners drive our population up and our prices of houses and cars sky high. They flood our shopping centres, MRTs and buses. How do we strike the right balance? We're limited by our land and resources. Perhaps I should migrate.

There are still many ways we can help Singaporean to be better but I don't see the effort. I have one Singaporean ex engineers. He trains scholars who were in Industrial attachments. After he got retrenched in his late fifties , tried to find jobs all turn him down...Drop his expectation from Engineer post to Technician, no one takes him and he felt betray by his government because of the foreigners that compete with him for the job. Finally he drove a cab. He has many friends, engineers, managers in similar situation and now drive a cab for living. All the years in Poly, universities and working experience go down the drain. Why can't the Government set up an institution to allow this people teach and mentor our young Singaporean?

The problem is with the employer, at late 50s he still has 10 more years to go but the employer would rather hire someone who can go for 50 years more. That is the shortsightedness of the employer, they think that a employee will stay in a company for 50 years.
The answer is to work with the employer to not fire old people. If company fire people as and when they like and government just build a net to catch them then the company will fire even younger employee to replace them with even younger employee.

Not exactly, the political agreement between Singapore & Malaysia is a foreign minister must be always be a non-Chinese. So, to get him out as a Singapore Chinese foreign minister, make him stand for election in Hougang-Aljunied GRC and he lost the ministerial post. Here is a brief history of Singapore's foreign affair...S. Rajaratnam, Danabalan, Jayakumar, George Yeo? Then, the saga continues, when George Yeo lost the election is back to square one. He is replaced by K. Shamugan then Vivian Balakrishnan currently. What will they think of next?

No govt in the world will favour foreigners over its own citizens in local employment. The crux of the matter is whether the system used by the govt to ensure preference is given to local is effectively implemented. Those who really concern about the matter should get their MP to find out what methods used by govt to implement Singaporean first and whether the enforcement is effectively carried out. Cursing and swearing in the internet will not bring any results.

The are more FT from india and south east asia then there are people in Singapore. No matter how good we are, there will be someone or better out there that cost cheaper then us. If we had to compete with them fairly then we must take their pay.
Last I heard a FT who is taking 1k less then me is willing to work 7 days a week. I can ever compete with that unless I ask for less pay then him.

Tan Cheng Bock, Lee Kuan Yew, George Yeo all put Singaporeans first but do it in different way.
Tan Cheng Bock is more direct which sounds good at face value but might or might not be good for the bigger picture.
After all, there is a reason for FT and the reasons for FT have been repeated again and again by the ministers but the younger generations every year don't know it.

What IF, Mr Tan is the Boss of a large company, 10 Singaporean professional applies for the job, 10 Foreigners professional too, apply for the same job. You can take in a total of 20~30 professionals if you employ the foreigners.
Who and how many Singaporean can you employ considering the overhead high costs.
What IF one cannot find enough people to fill the ‘less professional’ jobs where Singaporean tends to avoid, the boss have no option but to take in the foreigners.
Probable the key is to establish a balance point that will give Singaporean the job security we need.
And that’s not as easy as tasks as A,B,C.
p.s. No one would want to feel as if their country is being ‘invaded’ by foreigners.

Dr Tan has spoken from his heart and we should respect that and think deeply on what he has said. I believed he can forge a cohesive nation breaking down the racial divides. I second the idea of removing the racial help groups of CDAC, SINDA and MBMF and form just one help group for the poor. This is an excellent idea which in my opinion is of high moral standard.

As an employer, his or her duty is to make sure the company is surviving and making profits. That is true for a company but we are also looking at this from a government and country point of view. The government after all has to take care of the people while the people support the government. If the effort is skewed in either way then either party is going to have a harder time.
Since Singaporean is more expensive, company will never hire a Singaporean if the government hasn't implement the FT : Singaporean quota system.
