Well done. If the hole is cut at the perfect spot there is a better way to remove and insert the spring bars. The Barton video make it look easy bc they use a silicone strap but it can be done with leather too.

Keep an old pin inside the strap when you are cutting the hole, that way you can cut a better hole and prevent cutting through the strap. Thanks for the video.

Doing so made me cut right through. Twice. My butterfingers are better with more tactile feel, it seems. I need to find a tiny, flat piece of metal instead. I think that'll work great.

before you put the spring bar in, tie a string to the little quick release bar sticking out. feed the string through the spring bar hole, and then through the quick release bar hole that you cut out. Once the spring bar is in just tug on the string to turn the quick release bar into the hole.

If I can add my 2 cents by saying, it's good to put a matchstick/cocktail stick through first. This way, you can lean a little heavier when cutting and don't damage your blade. I find it's easier just to make a slit without creating a rectangle. That way the pin can still stick out and travel when you pull it back.

Put the long end through the new slot you’ve cut then slide it in and back to the right , much easier than pushing the QR handle through the small hole / fold . Cut the slot slight more to the left to allow this movement .

Great video, thanks! I took your advice at the end to cut a larger hole, and pound that pin in like prom night.

Just modified my band from hadley roma. No issues. I did purchase a knife like that one and it was easy to be precise (can not image been able to do it with another type of knife). I did realized that in the two opportunities I didn't cut enough and had to cut a little more. So much easier now to swap bands. Thanks!

Thanks Kurt. That looked a bit intense.
For us first timers, it's probably best to practice on some really cheap watch straps to perfect the technique.

  • @ptzish
    @ptzish 11 месяцев назад

If you just put the long side of the pin into the hole you just cut and push it in hard, then work the little tiny side in the opposite direction, it's way easier than just shoving the release tab through the side of the strap. It's a little hard to explain with words but there are other videos on here that show the technique. Forcing it through can rip soft leather.

I used a Dremel tool and a very small spherical carbide bit to do my stingray straps. There is no way to use a knife on those. It worked perfectly. It actually works well on leather straps too.

It is not ruined. There is a made-for-leather glue/putty mix combo that you can buy if you want to fix the watch band. Several brands out there. You can also sand the spot smooth after the putty filler dries and dye to match (or use a Sharpie) if the pin head spot bothers you.

Cool. Got some quick release spring bars myself to try in a couple of straps i have. Why dont they make all straps with quick release, idk?
    Anyways, some additional tips.
You may want to leave a norma spring bar inside the strap, or at least a pin or nail about the same thickness so that when you cut out the hole, u have something inside that should help prevent you fron cutting straight to the otherwise of the strap.
2nd, the hole for the quick release lever. You may want to make it longer, about double the length of thw movement of the lever. That way you have enough angle to fit the quick release spring bar through that hole instead of force fitting it from the side end.. which risks tearing or ripping. Make sense?
You just sort of back up into it the hole. then when you're in, push it the other direction to fit right and centered.
I think you'll find it easier to slip it in without risk tearing the side ends which already have a thinner amount of material since you cut out some for the quick release lever.
Great diy though.. i need get around to do mine, too.

Good tips. As for the fold-over method, I've pinned Barton's video. Thanks! Good luck with yours. I'm learning all this stuff so I can make my Mr. Sailcloth straps into quick-release ones. That plastic sleeve sure does make them difficult to remove.

Instead of cutting, how about drilling (burring) and then moving the bit down, effectively removing enough material but leaving the edges round? It should provide less opportunity for tearing. You might get a thin carbide bur for less than $5 a piece. Here is an example: www.gesswein.com/p-3445-busch-super-carbide-burs-332-shank.aspx It would have to be very speed not to tear leather, though.

ik think i did ask it earlier, but most of the Seiko divers have fat spring bars. Do these quick release spring bars fit in the lug holes the way they should? I mean isn't there to much space so that it will harm the lug holes?

Wow! Am I the only one, watching this video has turned me of buying a new strap for my watch with quick release pins, just in case I'm as useless as this guy if I ever have to replace the pins. Why would you buy a good expensive band, knowing that one the pins are going to stuff up, and then you just throw away the strap, as he suggests.

the friction will tear the leather, you cannot make a neat straight cut in a soft material with a rotating tool
what would be best is a small leather hole punch with a little piece of flat metal inside the band

Hustling as hard as I can with everything that I'm doing. Every day I think about it. Every day I see my dream. I just got some springs and a new set of valve bases for Daisy. I haven't ridden her in months to her seals taking a dump so I figured I may as well try and rebuild the forks and fix the uneven dampening that WRR's come with. Definitely going to ship it up to where ever I am going as well as my car. I'm super excited but scared shitless. I miss riding new places!
