Damn, The Sooners had Elvis Peacock, Kenny King, Billy Sims and David Overstreet. These backs that deep and had crazy names too..lol. All these guys had productive NFL careers. I still cannot recall to this day any team had the depth Oklahoma had at the running back position. Plus another Running QB in Thomas Lott. Wow, Switzerland best team really. Heck, what about Nebraska running backs I.M. Hipp and Jarvis Redwine? The 70s had best names in college football.

Was at this game, September of 1977, freshman at OSU. The wind gusted so strong, the good year blimp left the stadium area. Very physical game, took a lot out of both teams that season. Bucks season opener that year was a 10 to zero win over miami of florida.
Next to the last season in the Woody Hayes era. No doubt this game was a test to his anger management which would cause his demise a little more than a year later. This year they would later lose to their rival Michigan 14-6 and were pummeled in the Sugar Bowl by Alabama 35-6. I think that was the game Woody punched a cameraman. Uwe Von Schamann went on to play for the Miami Dolphins for six seasons. His last game was in their Super Bowl loss to the 49ers. Ron Springs fared decently with the Dallas Cowboys.
In remberance of Tom Blinco, #29 freshman inside linebacker who stepped in for Tom Consteau who was injured in this game. Tom played for my high football team in 1975 and 1976 (Lewiston Porter) and played both ways. He was awarded for being the best football player in Western In 1976. However, it is with great sadness that I have been informed of his passing at age 64 last week on March 21st 2022
Interesting that each team's momentum shifted with the wind direction. This was a classic college football game. One year before Billy Sims won the Heisman, and he was flashing greatness. Woody Hayes was one year from retirement. How many All-Americans suited up and were on the field that day?
Stop embarrassing yourself, OSU didn't have their starting center and lost their best defensive player early with a shoulder separation. Neither of these teams were great, as they both showed on New Year's night in Bowl games when they both got destroyed.

Besides, it was Big Ten tradition for that time to get beat by the speed of the west coast teams in the Rose Bowl. It was not until the late eighties that the Pac Ten started having champs that would lose to the Big slow Ten on occasion.
I think the 1985 OU vs Nebraska game might beat this one...OU had Spencer Tillman, Lydell Carr, Patrick Collins, Leon Perry and Anthony Stafford. NU had Doug DuBose and Tom Rathman. Of course Keith Jackson lead both teams in rushing as he rushed for 138 yards on just 3 carries! Oh, and Jamelle Hollieway wasn't a bad rusher either that day.
Gee! It is unusual to watch an Oklahoma football game without hearing the constant droning of the "Boomer Sooner" fight song being played by the OU band.

To wit: the following year at the ‘78 Gator Bowl against Clemson “Woody Hayes grabbed the back of Clemson player Charlie Bauman’s jersey, wound up and punched him in the chest, just below the neck. Bauman looked over at the Old Man like he might have looked at a poodle nipping at his pants. Bauman was in full pads and a helmet; Hayes was in a windbreaker and a black cap, flailing at him. Bauman didn’t strike back. He didn’t even push Hayes away. He just retreated toward his teammates on the field as Hayes kept grabbing at him. Clemson players ran over to the sideline; Ohio State players scuffled with them. One of Woody’s captains, Byron Cato, pulled him away.” Class act indeed.

Watching this and other 1970s games with asymmetrical running teams like Alabama, Ohio St and Oklahoma you can see that none of them when faced with truly great balanced teams would rarely win - 1970 and 1971 Huskers, 1972, 72 and 78 Trojans and 1973 and 1977 Irish all ate the lunch of their running (wishbone, 3 yards and cloud of dust, etc.) opponents

The running teams won more national titles in the 70's than the "balanced" teams. bear Bryant went from passing to running the wishbone and beat USC in LA too. The Huskers ran over 80% of the time all the way until Osborne retired. People only remember Miami beating the running teams in the 80's. One of Jimmy Johnson's assistants said the reason they did so well against the option teams was cause Jimmy was a former d line coach at OU and knew all of the line calls and tendencies.

At 3:00 about Billy Sims, he turned 22 years old a few days before this game as only a sophomore. Herschel Walker was 20 years old when he completed his football career at Georgia.

I don't know what happened but yes that was shown in original along with Switzer smoking a cigarette on sidelines before the kick.
When asked what he thought of such an exciting game, Hayes replied, "To hell with exciting! I'd rather be drab as hell and win!"

1978 probably the only time Ohio State loses two bowl games in one year,Dec27th losing to Clemson which of course was the final game for Woody Hayes.
