oct 8 1977 my wedding day. we listend to the game on the car radio all the way to the hotel 150 miles away. one of the most memorable days of my life! (yes we're still married)
This game brings back an amazing memory. I was supposed to go to this game with my best friends family. My soccer game went into OT and ran late, so they left without me. I was so bummed. My single mom knew how bad i wanted to go to this game, and she decided her 7 year old son wasnt going to miss this game. It was sold out, and she drove us down to the coliseum from Manhattan Beach (which was WAY different than it is today), in hope that we could somehow see the game. As we walked up to the east end, the peristyle end, they had these big black iron rod gates. The game had already kicked off and I could hear the public address announcers familiar voice boom over the loudspeakers. Tears were streaming down my face outside the gates. A gigantic police officer walked over and started talking to my Mom and I from inside the gates. He was a big black cop, and after awhile of talking to me while i was sobbing, he told my mom he would be right back. He returned about 10 minutes later with 2 tickets in his hand and said "lady, any kid that wants to see this game as bad as your son does, deserves to see this game" and he handed my mom 2 tickets. We were seated in the old east end zone bleachers, right in the Alabama fan sections, and with all my SC gear on. Those people treated me great too. I wish i had the name of the officer, I would have loved to tell him that the memory and his gesture has stuck with me, even 45 years later. Whoever you were, Bless you sir and THANK YOU
@@michaelokeefe8709 I thank my Mom often regarding that day. She didn't have to drive me down there, and she was doing this under the premise that she thought they could page him over the PA system, which is insane in hindsight. I'm just grateful all those pieces came into place on that day. MY sweet Mom for making the effort and that Huge black police officer, who handed this little white kid two tickets to see Bear Bryant and Alabama play his Trojans.
This game also brings an amazing memory for me. Living in Los Angeles, I remember later that night, the Dodgers beat the Phillies at Philadelphia to win the 1977 National League Pennant.
+David Clements Yes, he was talking about the guys sitting in the aisle standing to let her by. Although after he said it he probably thought to himself "oh no".

Thanks to YT, I watched this a few years ago in a battle of two titans of college football lore (since at the time I was only 3). In the four regular season meetings in the 1970's the decade of dominance of each team in their respective conferences, they split 2-2 winning all games on the other teams' fields. Bama is 5-2 overall. Having defeated USC in their first meeting, 19-7 in LA in 1938. And in their last meeting 52-6 to start the 2016 season in Dallas. The only bowl battle was in 1985 in the Aloha Bowl. Mike Shula through 3 TD's in a 24-3 win over Ted Tollner's Trojans. That was the prize for Bama beating Auburn (and eventual Heisman Winner Bo Jackson) on a last-second FG by Van Tiffin one month prior.
I remember that van tiffin Kick, my dad(auburn fan) was at my place in N.O. La, and I had lost hope bcuz it was a very long FG so long I was shocked he had made it.

Bear owes some of his success to USC - after USC and Sam Cunningham routed the Tide in 1970, Bear was convinced he needed to have Black players on his team, which helped the Bama teams greatly after that.
USC came into this game Top Ranked in the polls. After this game, the Trojans faltered all the way to needing to beat UCLA after Thanksgiving to earn a spot in the Bluebonnet Bowl.
