    I'm so jealous of your yard, I drool every time I watch your video. Vands are beautiful and every time i buy orchids i refrain myself from buying Vands, looking for a replacement in hybrids with smaller species .... Of course there will be some more Vands in my collection, I'm not strong enough not to buy them any more. It wouldn’t surprise me to end up having vandas instead of curtains. Thank you...

      Hi there 😍💐 I love my little patio as well... when I can access it and not have to rush around dodging the rain 😅 but, it is a treat to have all the sides to play with depending on the season. Thank you for your kind comment 🥰 if I am ever on the market for vandas in the future, I am going to restrict myself to the medium sized ones, or the compact smaller ones that I should be able to handle in my climate long term. I think Vandas are a fantastic solution for curtains... my goodness... the idea is genius 😅😅 for real!! Thank you so much for taking the time to come and watch my video!! And thank you so very much for joining in 🙏🏼🙌🏼🌸

    Wow!! Such a great video! That humidity is a mother…… working on it now bc it’s already 80s in my greenhouse and spring just began. Refilling these humidifiers are going to be a job. I have 2 now and I think 2 more should do the job. Such a boatload of great information. Even the women in your comments! I love you guys! Awesome Nina!!!

      HI there 😍🙌🏼💐 thank YOU sooooo much for your amazing comment!! 🙏🏼 wow! How kind of you to write that, I really appreciate it, thank you! If in doubt, double the kit for humidity.., it is easier to switch one off than trying to chase humidity. I get a callous on my right hand throughout the season, because I am busy spraying orchids down on a regular basis daily. I am grateful to read that you enjoyed this 🙏🏼 love you back!! I hope you had yourself a wonderful Saturday 🌸

    Great video amiga. Yes, I may have collected a bit more vandas than I have space for and learned my lesson with the lack of air circulation 🙈. It took me years to figure them out. Now that I finally feel comfortable growing them; I need to stop myself from adding any more large vanda orchids to my collection because as they get bigger care changes! 💚 have a lovely week ahead my dear.

      Hi! 😍🙌🏼💐 in your climate, every single space on your fence can be used to pin them to 😜 man... mine were doing so great! I really was knocked for six last year when circumstances happened and I could not provide enough water to flush them clear of the copper... it was awful! 😤 and all the while, the RO technician was jerking me around... 4 months, back and forth for 4 months, from the initial appointment that confirmed he would come within 2 weeks of me making the request. It was a horrible summer experience! ... anyhoo! Hoping that my last 2 make it 🙏🏼 really appreciate you taking the time to come and watch my video already. I saw that you set your's with a premiere, but I doubt I will be able to make it. I have the link already though 😃 have a fabulous rest of your evening and great start to Saturday, amiga ❤️🌸

      HI Robert 😍💐 thank you so very much for your kind comment and for heading on to the next one! Busy day, and I have as yet to watch them all and thank everyone under their videos, but, this morning I managed to get to most that had been posted. Really appreciate your support on this! Those little Pixie Dusts are the kind that I would focus on in the future! IF I were to ever be on the market for orchids again. Certainly not the big vandas anymore! Lessons learned 👍🏼 I am waiting for my down time to watch Todd's video, because... he has the collection of collections, and they are so gorgeous when in bloom. I had some on / off sun today, so... it was all about the animals and the 'chiddos today. Lots of walks, no filming... and the result is, there is silence underneath my desk 😂 if Xyliano is pooped and tucked away early it seems. These past gloomy days, he has had a lot more free flight time, and well... I guess it shows because he is in his cage, only has a little snack, and then alerts me that he wants his privacy... silence to my right as well 👍🏼👍🏼 I have a diabolical headache, though! I am hoping that it means the weather is going to change after all? Contrary to the forecast? Anyhoo... I shall do my YT housekeeping and then chase the sheep out of my zimmer... it's getting crowded up there, and I have no need for them 😅 thank you for everything, Robert!! Hope your Saturday is nothing short of fabulous! 😘🌸

    🦒💖🌺 I really enjoyed your video and I am sure your heads up will be very useful, the unruly roots being the most difficult to accomodate. They are indeed a different animal 😂🤣 It is like having a spiral horned antilope in the room 🦌 Amazing how your denisoniana and the leopard yawn have adapted to the cold nights and days, living outside during winter 😮. Very often I think what I will do if and when my Vandas grow as big as a tree 🤔 For the moment my plant B is hoping they grow roots half way to be able to divide later but I am not so sure they are willing to cope. Thank you so very much 🙏🙏🙏for organizing this one on such short notice, it was surely a time consuming CareCollab to put together, all the emails back and forth. A great success, so many channels willing to participate, not only showing that the #CareCollabs are very much alive. Hope you are feeling better today, some sun perhaps? It was sunny here yesterday. I did some weeding yesterday and I hope I can continue today (my hands and nails are suffering, I cannot do it with gloves). I do it manually, not using herbicide not only because of Olivia but also because I see that the birds feed on the seeds or little creatures living among the leaves. And yes, these little weeds have botanical names, some are edible others have little nice flowers if I let them grow. The rain will hit tomorrow and it will go on as far as I can see in my APP. Patience, patience amiga, less electricity bill and more humidity to counteract with less light. Btw, you should be authorized to get more power from next door, considering the inconveniences 😠. Much, much love to you amiga mia 😍🤗💖

      FFF 🙌🏼😍🤸🏼‍♀️🥰😘❤️💐 thank you so very much for your kind and positive comment, meine liebe Freundin!! I so very much appreciate it 🙏🏼 we had some sun today, on and off, so... no filming... chiddos outside and lots of walks with both dogs, which was interesting!! But the result is, they are both fast asleep under my desk, King is snoring 😅 but .... after these past days of me not walking them, I dropped everything to focus on them and Xyliano, until it was time to bring the chiddos back inside. Tonight the temperatures should not drop below 14º and I was tempted to leave most of them outside, but thought against it... just in case! So, the weather is supposedly going to deteriorate further tomorrow. I agree with you, and I am staying attached to that other property until the weather settles properly. The fuse trips when the afternoon turns into evening, even today, after we had 6 hours of no rain. I am staying with the extension cord... for sure! I also did some weeding, in my orchid pots 😆 not the same, but weeding none the less. Not that I mind my ferns, but not under these conditions, and they will come back anyway. I just don't have any use for them now. I am so happy that the 2 vandas I have left, are coping with the conditions. I am now waiting to see if all the rain is going to help them develop new roots 🤞🏼 today they got a CalMag application 🤞🏼 I have a blinding headache, all day... and it was as if the forecast was changing and it won't be the same weather as the past 2 weeks, but maybe it was just because today the there was scattered sunshine, I don't know, but, I will be glad to get to bed, that's for sure! I am so happy that there was such a great turn out for the CareCollab and I hope that your viewer will get all the helpful care material that they were looking for 👍🏼😘 thank YOU so much for your support, and above all your friendship, amiga mia!! It is truly uplifting ❤️ have a lovely restful evening and a great start to your Sunday 😘❤️🌸

    I got my first Vanda 22 years ago and she has morphed into 3 plants. They live outside, bare rooted, north facing and bloom multiple times a year. I just cut off the lower 1/3 because they were unruly. They seem to get everything they need without my help. We have well water for irrigation and I assume the natural phosphorus in Florida water is all they need. I have 21 vanda/ crosses and half are outside. Thanks for your video, Nina. As always lots of good information. Brightest Blessings.

      Hi Elaine 😍💐 22 years to have a vanda, that is like having a baby that has grown up to a wonderful human being! Wow!! How special is that! 🙏🏼 And, your climate is the exact description that I was trying to make in my video... it is my ideal climate as well. I thrive in those conditions! While I was in FL, everyone was indoors in the AC, me... outdoors and just soaking it in. I absolutely love it! And clearly... your vandas do as well, which is such a treat 👍🏼👍🏼 thank YOU so much for watching and I appreciate your comment, seeing my pathetic attempt at getting in right for these gorgeous creatures, and not being successful in the end!! @@NinjaOrchids I lied...I found 4 more. Having them North facing has convinced me that they do not need sun but strong light. They get sun for a few days at the summer solstice. What they do get is humidity and a nice breeze. We are on the ridge so wind currents are always moving.

      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +5

    Wonderful video! And everything you say is so true! I am fortunate to grow them outdoor in high humidity, and don't know what I'd I do if I had to grow them indoors. Having to bring them into the garage when it gets cold (below 50F or so) is a real chore since they are so big. So far (touch wood) I haven't had too much problem with fungus or pests - maybe because of where they are located, they sort of take care of themselves and I don't do a lot of fertilization. That probably means few spikes, but they are very healthy and that means a lot! When they bloom, nothing surpasses the size, and often the fragrance, of the blossoms! Thanks for a good care collab which I particularly love since it also introduces me to previously unknown (to me) orchid growers and hobbyists! ATB! And stay safe!

      Ann 🥰💐 hello lovely lady! high humidity, outdoors.., that is my kind of climate as well. I thrive in high humidity climates!! They do take care of themselves in your climate, which is such a joy, because they bloom and perform, it is joy all the way around. I am so glad that you fit into that category of vanda grower! I appreciate that you took the time to watch my video, listening to my woes / warnings, despite the fact that you have none of these to worry about... it could have been a boring video for you 😅 thank you for your time, and your support, Ann! 🌸

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +2

      Stephen, hi 😍💐 thank you so much for once again leaving me a kind and positive comment! Never run out of sufficient water!! That is the final straw for any large vandas... I think I could have flushed my roots more and cleaned / watered my vandas more, soaked them in their tub to restore the functionality of the velamen to a degree, after my copper treatment, IF I had had the RO system running at full capacity, as it should and had been in the years gone by. My mistake with the dose of copper is one thing, but the lack of water to reverse that mistake... well, that is what I would love to redo, go back and I would still have my big ones. Filling a tub 1/week with 150l of RO water is fine when the system is running, but that was the amount of water I needed for a whole week on the orchids, and I was not soaking with my usual treatments, or flushing abundantly. So yeah... the vandas suffered because I had to pace the water supply as best as possible. A real shame. And the technician jerks me around for 4 months... you know, once you accept a quote etc, you think that you are well on your way to getting service, the emails were back and forth, one excuse after the other, I did not seek out another technician because of the warranty etc etc etc... it just dragged out and suddenly, it was October when I had had enough and cancelled the order. in 2020 they were quick to respond, despite the cooties. It was just a nightmare of a summer 😓 oh well. If nothing else, I hope that these observations will help someone make a calculated decision and avoid them the heartache. 🤞🏼 thank you so much for watching, Stephen! I hope that you had a great Saturday 🥰🌸

Not that this one goes dormant ... but, like her, I shut down when it gets cold as well, sooooo, I truly feel what she is going through. I am really hoping that all the rain we are having will be the water elixir that she needs to start with new roots. Shame you couldn't have just stuffed them into the hedge. I suppose, though, not having all the big Vandas gives room for the Stanhopeas. Personally, the Vandas just aren't for me, but I've mentioned that before.
    Also, my hands are really sore. Splinters, scrapes, blisters. They're dry from being washed a hundred times. I was not made for demolition. I guess the woman at Jo Bob's Trading Post in Cape Hatteras was right, I am the delicate flower. 😂

      Don Miguel 😍💐 hola jefe! Well, I had 3 years of great joy and success, lots of blooms etc. The worst is when you see the decline and cannot stop it... once the situation has passed, and the vandas have passed, it is not so bad. Just that interim moment, that is the worst... you keep wishing, trying, holding on etc 😓 anyhooo!! Let's hope that the other 2 will pull through. Plenty of fresh rain water atm, so I am really hoping that they will produce some new roots. Going in with seaweed and CalMag when it is not raining. You need to wear gloves while doing what you are doing! Splinters at least can be avoided with gloves! Says the person that hates wearing gloves unless doing the dishes 😁😅 goodness... it sounds like Mr. T. drove into a section of your home with his tank! You are the delicate flower but with a very strong flower spike 😃👍🏼 good quality to have! Really appreciate you watching, and your support! Thank you so very much! 🌸🥷🏼 Trish San 😍❤️🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening Freundin! 🙌🏼 yep... unfortunately I have had great initial years, and then, my climate threw a wrench into the works, not helped by my intentions for a fungicide treatment, or water supply issues which all made the house of cards fall! Ce la vie! I am glad that this video gave you some pointers ... at least the experience was not for naught! Electricity? What electricity 👀 😓 I had some today while we had a break and it stopped raining for a few hours, but, I took the orchids outside so fast, ... I don't need it during the day. It started to rain, so, rapid hustle to get them inside again before they got too wet. And, that is when the fuse popped! Now, it is 1:30 am, and it has been hours since the rain, which has stopped, but the fuse keeps tripping, I cannot switch lights on, as I had intended over night. 💆🏼‍♀️ I am glad that I could get the fridge / freezer to cool down again during the day though. Small victories... but... as far as I can see in the forecast, this is going to stay the status quo until Friday next week. I am grateful for the extension cord, connecting me to electricity like an umbilical cord to my little corner at my desk. If that were not available, I would well and truly be screwed! So, yeah... my anxiety levels are off the charts. Hope you are doing well, amiga! I am sorry about the last comment you left 🤦🏼‍♀️ you'd think that YT would at least allow us to respond to comments without having them pop up days later. Really sorry! I have your video saved for when I have my 'down time' not supervising a cockatoo out of his cage, that would chew at anything he would find interesting, and he finds a lot of things interesting 😅 your vanda collection is second to none, so... it will be a treat with pre bedtime hot chocolate 😋 thank you so very much for already taking the time to watch my video, I really appreciate it very much 😘 🌸

Now that I understand that the good care in the early years will make them grow to a size that is not compatible with what my climate or indoor conditions offer. Hi,I have had a vanda for almost two years,I have a few others. Should the roots turn darker with age? I live in a home. They sit in watering buckets for an hour and they get 20-20-20 weakly each week

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +5

      Hi Nichet 🤗💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so... a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it 🙌🏼 the roots do turn darker with age, yes. The damage on my roots shows a darker color because the velamen is damaged from a copper fungicide treatment I did in 2021 and they never recovered from that. However, all epiphytic roots exposed to the environment will look aged and gnarled the older they get, but they still function perfectly! 👍🏼 I have a video in the Orchid Lingo series, where I go into more detail on roots, and show some really old roots that look nasty, compared to what we love to see, but they are perfectly fine. In case you are interested, here is the link ruclips.net/video/U-kNcbIHCoI/видео.html thank you so much for watching and once again, welcome 🤗 hope you had a wonderful weekend 🌸

    Hi Nina 👋 me again! I have gone back in time and am watching some of your older videos. Which vandas do you find do best for you in terms of ease of care? Coerulea? I am wanting to "branch out" and have been told they do well in my conditions (Perth WA). Angraecums grow very well here and I am having success with an aerides houlletiana as well, but I am wanting to try my hand at some vandas.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  9 месяцев назад +4

      Hey Lisa 😍💐 good to see you again 😃 ease of care, surprisingly, I find any species vanda to be easier to care for seeing as their care requirements do not clash with another parent which can get a little confusing and cause vandas to not bloom or not perform in growth as they would if they had not been hybridized. That does not include the common commercialized NoID vandas, of course, because they have been bred to be grow well and bloom consistently. Coerulea is a wonderful vanda, if she is on her own. I have her in combination with a rhynchostylis gigantea as a parent and it is a pain in the derriere to get it to bloom again. I am hoping that come 2024, I may get blooms again after 4 years of trying to figure out what she actually can handle. The gigantea is interfering with what would be an easy and fun vanda to grow. Also, consider the size when you get vandas. They will grow huge, eventually, and the bigger they get, the more demanding they become and sometimes, our environment will not cut it after a certain size. I have a video, if you would like to check it out, giving insight into how I lost all my large vandas ruclips.net/video/IeNEQjRohr8/видео.html if I had taken what I mention in this video into consideration, back when I purchased these vandas, I would have stuck with the denisoniana and the medium sized NoID which I called 'Leopard's Yawn'. If you are doing well with your houlletiana, then you have plenty of humidity. Much needed for all vandas to ensure that once they grow to size, the care requirements do not overwhelm. Thank you for going back and watching older videos, I so appreciate the support 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +6

      Hi Donna 🤩💐 Welcome!! I have not seen you here before, so, first of all... a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here 🙌🏼 there is definitely hope in a house in Maryland, absolutely yes! This video was not meant to discourage anyone from growing these beauties, but to give a heads up as to what to expect and be prepared. I was under the impression that my outdoor conditions would be absolutely fine and space was never a concern of mine. I never factored in that my water supply would be a problem, and bang in the middle of the hottest time of year. I also did not factor in just how low my humidity is here, and my big vandas showed me that it was not enough, once they grew to size, AND then my not being able to compensate with soaking / misting. It was a bad combination. So... if you have the space indoors long term, your vandas will grow beautifully 👍🏼👍🏼 I also believe that your mains water is of much better quality than mine here. That is a big plus ... having that direct access to clean water is huge!! I hope that this puts your mind at rest, and that you will have a fabulous time with your newcomers 🤩🤩 thank you so much for watching, and...once again... welcome! 🌸

    Thank you for care tips, Nina🌸 i have a question. I bever see that in vandas or any other vandatious. One of my vandas she grow new leaf but that leaf do not open... in grow like 'tube'. It have opening only on top but two sides of leaf are attached to each other without any gap...i will send you a picture so you can see what i mean. If you know what i can do with that pls let me know. My worries are that after that 'tube' leaf will mature another new one will not be able to go out.. maybe i should do a 'surgery ' and open one side as normally it should be?

      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +4

      HI Amina 😍💐 I have seen your email Amina! If I may answer your question here, then it may help someone else that has similar things happening on their vandas. Check your humidity, if your humidity is low because of heating in the house, then find a way to add more humidity around the orchid... also, maybe give it more water so that it has the energy to open that leaf. I would ask you, how long has the lower part of the leaf been closed, compared to what is opening at the end of it? A new leaf will be able to grow, without any problems. Your leaf is still very young, which is another thing. It is by no means long enough yet to be considered ready for the next leaf to grow. It has yet to extend at least double before it is ready for another leaf. Let me know if what I am telling you makes sense and helped to answer your question / concern. Thank you so much for watching, Amina!! Looking forward to hearing from you 🤗🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids thank you, Nina🌸 humidity- yes ...now its quite low- 35-40% and i spray roots every day several times. My vanda is potted in bark and i check regularly so she don't need more water at that point. Leaf he is closed from beginning of its appearance and its no signe of splitting. Its solid. Its one tissue all around. You know, when, for example, leaf on oncidium or cattleya or phalaenopsis grow and didn't split you can help by nail of your finger. But here there is no place to put your nail.. and the size of a leaf is big enough to start split in comparison with previous one. So definitely i will try to rise up humidity and we will wait for some time🌸 thank you againg for response 🌸

      I took a closer look at your images, like... expanded them, and emailed you back! Just to confirm what I was seeing! We can continue the dialogue there, but, if you say the leaf is fused together, like a straw, then, you need to take a sharp blade and cut it. Not to fold it back and try to flatten it, but to get that structure to open up. I have never seen anything like it before. Please check your email! Your watering is on point, .... so, lets make sure that we are talking about the same thing, based on what I saw when I zoomed in 👍🏼👍🏼

      Take a sharp blade and cut it following down the leaf to as far to the base that you can go. Its going to be fiddly, but try and get cinnamon along the cut. Cover your entire vanda with a WET cloth before adding cinnamon so that any of the loose powder will fall on the wet cloth, and not touch any roots. This way you won't have to worry about getting cinnamon everywhere else and can apply it until you have the cuts covered. This is so strange. I can only think of the orchid confused about time of year / season. It makes no sense other wise. How long have you had it? Is this your first winter with this vanda? Very very interesting, even though not normal at all. But, she is healthy! This is not because of something being wrong with the orchid, so, that is a good thing 👍🏼

      🙏🏼 I went to check my emails .... I saw that you were on all the lists, so WHAT a relief!! I know where I made my mistake, I remember the situation clearly, but did not think that I had deleted the double twice. Again, how I did not get the count right with my list open next to me and clicking on every channel name individually as I counted... that is what bugs me the most! Because, then the mistake perpetuated itself in the description, because I have my editing software open to add channel names into my description. Gah!! Thank you for being so gracious about it 🙏🏼
