Most groups tried to do their big songs live exactly like the album and it doesn't often work. A great thing about Queen live was - How are they going to do it this time? - and it was always awesome.
And yet they keep the parts that the audience *needs* - eg: Brian's doesn't rewrite his solos entirely, like eg: The Eagles did for their live Hotel Cal.
That whole concert can be found on RUclips and I think it’s Freddie’s voice at its peak. If you haven’t already check out “save me” from the same concert. Freddie mixes tender high notes with his gritty rock voice. 👌🏻
@@CalebColesMusic Please check out the entire concert!! The HD and sound qualities are unbelievable and, IMO, Montreal 81 is the best live performance by Queen
@@janbarriault4494 The audience was pretty cold and Queen hadn't had that in some time (or after that show). See for example 'Love of my life', usually the audience would sing most of that, here Freddie says 'they don't know it" Brian answers 'that's alright' and Freddie sings the whole song better than ever. This show is so fantastic to me just because they had to work harder than usual to get the audience on their side, for the last time in their career. And they never worked so hard and had one of their best shows ever despite the audience.
Freddie was the GOAT. Period. Queen as a whole just can't be touched. Every one of them was perfectly in sync with the other and their energy is insane (never mind how Freddie connects with the audience.) Love them!
Queen is Legendary and always will be..Amazing chemistry, totally focused, very harmonized, and a lot of energy. Freddie, Brian, Roger and John, best musicians by far. Don't forget Roger's backing vocals while playing the drums. Concerts are not like that today. No lip syncing whatsoever. Pure talent. ❤️🔥

Hey Caleb... Been watching your reactions & original performances for sometime now, having originally discovered you during my “find everyone’s first reaction to Dimash” journey...!!! I was up late as usual, coming from the heartland of the USA, when I got a suggestion for this Queen song, and at that time it had exactly 1-View...! I almost felt like I was sharing a live reaction with you...! I was a child of the 70’s & 80’s and Queen was just such a fresh new take on Stadium Rock, and I followed Freddie all the way to the end and beyond... I really enjoy your reactions, because you seem to mirror mine to a tee. I love and appreciate your spirit, and coming from a fellow believer, it’s refreshing to hear someone who actually isn’t judgmental, when commenting on topics or performers who may not be the most acceptable to the “Mainstream,”. That truly reveals your good heart, and your light is surely shining brightly my Brother...! This was definitely spontaneous, inspired by your pure enthusiasm and joy you show doing what you love to do, and by the way, your Dimash Cover’s are incredible, I love your interpretation’s and the fact that your doing it out of inspiration and as an homage to his God given and well rehearsed skills. I can tell you would understand when I say, I feel like God has given Dimash the “Anointing of David,” to reach right into peoples spirit and make them “feel” the true original purpose & power of all the good that music can be, and was intended for. I’m getting a little wordy, but I’m feeling inspired to share this with you, because I sense the same pureness of spirit, and that same anointing emanating from within you... So be encouraged, who would have thought of the reach and connections that are now possible, that a guy from Cincinnati, Ohio USA at 5:50 am (my time) could be touched by a guy in Australia, causing me to step out if my shell and connect with you... Great chatting, and I’m always looking forward to be notified of your New Content...😆
That is so good. It is funny how it works, and the blessing of the internet to connect from the other side of the world! That is so encouraging. Thanks heaps. I do truly believe a simple approach to life and looking for the gold in people and things is the way God wants us to live. It is what I see in the way Jesus lived, so when I approach music and artists it is also what I look for. So glad you are enjoying my videos and thanks for being part of the journey!!
Queen is by far my favorite Rock band of all time ... they are fenominal ...one of the things i love about this group is that Freddie will step aside and let the band have the spot light from time to time ..but he love to play to the audience and the band will just let him go and do his thing ....it's amazing to watch the dynamic of the band ...
I honestly like this version more that the original ❤️the vocals are just phenomenal and everything about how Fred, Bri, Roger, and Deaky just mix together so well❤️❤️❤️ Some of my favorites are Live Aid, Play the game(live in Montreal and original), Seven Seas of Rhye live in 1974 November(before he had nodules), Liar, In My Defense, Good old fashioned lover boy (top of the pops), Love me like there's no tomorrow, Princes of the Universe, These are the days of our lives, Who wants to live forever, Tear it up (Live at Wembley 86 and original) There are so many more but these are a few😂😂❤️
@@valealmirati Imo Hammersmith 1979 is better, mostly because if you watch the real Montreal 81 version you would instantly switch to Hammersmith 1979 (that's how it was with me) But I do *_LOVE_* both.
thanks for this, Caleb - I can hear that you have some pretty impressive vocal chops, yourself! and love your appreciation for the rest of band - especially Brian - been in love with him since I was 15 yrs old.. still am, at 59- :) and of course Roger - not just drums but that backing vocal!
Hi dear!! Beautiful performance to react to. The video quality is amazing, i cant believe its almost 40 years ago 😄Hopefully you will do some more Queen. Keep up the good work, much bless ❤🍀
I love the opening where Freddie is fiddling chords getting ready to start the song. He does a quiet vocal pauses to find the camera and the look on his face says "Watch this!" and then he belts out that powerful rise and fall. His self confidence of his music was phenominal.
So glad you gave the rest of Queen their credit too. We all know how great Freddie was, but Queen doesn't have the success they do without Roger, Brian and John as well. All 4 members of Queen wrote a song that got to #1 on the charts and songs like I'm in love with my car and '39 have become some of my favorites because you can really hear how well Roger and Brian can sing
Loved your reaction! If you plan to do another Queen video I vote for White Queen at Hammersmith. I would seriously love a musician's take on how four human beings, no matter how talented, could possibly sound that good. Not joking. The instrumental section slays me every time.
@@CalebColesMusic Be prepared to be blown away. It's a shame they didn't do a split screen of Freddie and Brian during that instrumental. Otherworldly.

Best review. This song is my fav hands down. You need to watch an old Queen song White Queen. The marriage with Freddies piano and Brians Guitar is phenomenal. Thanks for the great review
So wish I’d seen them live! Freddie is my all time favourite singer but have to say Dimash is getting there for me, can’t believe I listen to so much that is in a language I don’t understand! Power of Dimash! Love your reactions and your original music and covers, keep going 😊
Thanks, I will do. Yeah Freddie and Dimash are both incredible. I think Freddie was more of a songwriter / performer. Dimash has a more refined vocal ability. That is not to say Dimash isn't a great songwriter / performer (because he is) or that Freddie didn't have a refined vocal ability (because he did). I just think their core strengths are a little different at this point in time. But who knows what the future holds for Dimash? :)
I was at that concert. I'm from Montreal.I was 17 at the time. That show was mindblowing!!! They sounded better than on their albums!! I was also at the LiveAid concert, I'll never forget it and will hold on to my ticket ( part of it) forever. Each time I hear them, I get goosebumps . Wonderful era, so lucky to have been part of it!!!
Caleb, you did an awesome job at reviewing Somebody To Love. You say you like Queen. Please react to more of their songs. You give excellent in depth insight into their voices, songs, performance, and musical prowess. Give us more on the legendary Queen!!!
In 2016, a group of Austrian, Czech, and Swedish researchers conducted research about Freddie's voice, and while they couldn’t confirm the long-held belief that his range spanned four full octaves, they did discover that despite being known as a tenor, he was more likely a baritone. They also found that Freddie's vocal cords moved faster than most people’s. While a typical vibrato will fluctuate between 5.4 Hz and 6.9 Hz, Mercury’s was a massive 7.04 Hz. All in all, Freddie Mercury had one of the most powerful voices ever known.
It was really a blessing when I twice had the opportunity to see them live in concert in Vienna, Austria - I will never forget that extraordnary performance they gave. I always liked them as a school kid. And I even love them more than ever before. I miss Freddie, his talents, accurancy and awsome melodies. This year on November 24th it is already 30 years ago since he passed away. R.I.P. Your Majesty ...
Freddie Mercury had one of the most recognisable voices in pop and rock history. But just how good was the frontman's vocal power? While Freddie's speaking voice fell in the baritone range, he delivered most songs in the tenor range. His known vocal extended from bass low F (F2) to soprano high F (F6).
He was actually trying to get the crowd to sing, which is what usually happens during this song. Evidently, they didn't know the words. The crowd at this show was famously low key. If you listen to the Milton Keynes performance, you will hear what I am talking about.
Hello from a fellow Aussie. Great reaction, thank you. I hope you continue to delve into Queen. If you want to see Freddie controlling a crowd of almost 80,000 like an orchestra conductor, check out Love of my Life and Under Pressure, both at Wembley Stadium 1986. He has them in the palm of his hand, obeying his every whim. Amazing! And you must watch White Queen live at the Odeon Hammersmith 1975. Freddie’s voice was so pure and clean (before he took up smoking) and the instrumental segment in the middle is utterly beautiful. It will blow your mind.
My suggested Queen reactions= ○ I'm Going Slightly Mad ○ Teo Torriatte (official lyric video) ○ Dragon Attack from Montreal 1981 ○ White Queen live Hammersmith Odeon 1975 ○ Who Wants to Live Forever live Friday night at Wembley 1986 (different than Saturday's)
I know everyone loves live performances. That said. I really wish somebody would tackle their albums / discography. Especially from 1973 to 1980. The mastery of sound engineering / mixing. Plus the interchanging vocals are amazing. Everyone is so focused on Fred. They expect to hear him. Consequently. That is all they do hear. Sometimes. I have even seen reactions to album cuts. Which Fred is not singing lead on at all, & reactors fail to notice!
I think one of the things I got from this performance is Freddie's range of genres of music he could sing. Yes, there was a range in bohemian rhapsody, obviously. But the combination of notes and the ways he sings them can be pulled out of a lot of other genres of music. He could have done anything with his voice and talent, but what he picked was absolutely perfect for him to put his voice, heart, and soul into. And I'm sure there is more across his other live songs. Under pressure as well.
Dropped in when I saw you're reacting to Queen. One of my favorites, different styles of Queen is Millionaires Waltz. Check it out. I also love Cool Cat and Action This Day, live version.
This is my second Queen reactions you've done and noticed you start them with "okay let's do it" - - did you notice it's the same thing Freddie says when he starts the main song? I noticed the connection (you&him) during the 1st reaction I watched (YTMBA). 😊
He wanted the live shows to be different than the albums, I think it’s really cool because he makes the concerts so unique but it wasn’t just him it was the whole band.
Freddie once said they mix it up & play songs differently for killer shows.. He said if u want the exact same version stay home & listen to the records.
I remember being utterly mystified when a friend in college had gone to a concert the night before and reported that it was "Great! Sounded exactly like the album!" Huh? If I wanted to hear a song performed exactly like the album......I'D PUT ON THE FREAKIN' ALBUM! lol
The best two perfomances of this song are Sao Paulo 1981 and Hammersmith odeon 1979, can you please react to the Hammersmith odeon 1979 Somebody to love, you will be absolutely blown away, Freddie takes the song to a whole new level, It's even better than this version.
IMO, the best front man to ever live, & out of all the concerts I went to over the years, QUEEN by far, was the most entertaining, exciting, & satisfying for me!!! Sadly missed & gone way too soon :(.......
That feeling you get when you're a better singer than ninety percent of the front men today and your the drummer behind Freddy

Loved your reaction! Would love to see you react to White Queen at Hammersmith 1975! So great! And You Take My Breath Away Hyde Park 1976
I will do it in the future. May take a little while til I get to it but I will :)
Queen - the best band ever !❤️❤️ all musical geniuses
I was at that concert. I'm from Montreal.I was 17 at the time. That show was mindblowing!!! They sounded better than on their albums!! I was also at the LiveAid concert, I'll never forget it and will hold on to my ticket ( part of it) forever. Each time I hear them, I get goosebumps . Wonderful era, so lucky to have been part of it!!!
only 4 instruments are being played on this live recording!
Your reaction is wonderful
Thank you. Best live version ever . Love Freddie and queen so much.
Pure showmanship the whole band so amazingly talented. I feel so glad this was my era even if I was a tad young in '81!
My favourite life piece. I always assumed it was rehearsed. In Wembley they did a completely different version.
OMG. YOU ARE PHENOMENAL.
I JUST HEARD YOU SING FOR THE FIRST TIME AND YOU BLEW MY MIND. UNREAL
Been listening to Queen for over 40 years and you
will never see hear any thing like Queen ever again and beloved Freddie
It was really a blessing when I twice had the opportunity to see them live in concert in Vienna, Austria - I will never forget that extraordnary performance they gave. I always liked them as a school kid. And I even love them more than ever before. I miss Freddie, his talents, accurancy and awsome melodies. This year on November 24th it is already 30 years ago since he passed away. R.I.P. Your Majesty ...
Before even watching this I need to say.. IMO this is THE BEST live performance of "Somebody to Love"!!
Still waiting for Don't stop me Now. Love how you do generously explain the virtuosity of Freddie in particular and Queen in general. Thanks!!
Freddie Mercury had one of the most recognisable voices in pop and rock
history. But just how good was the frontman's vocal power? While
Freddie's speaking voice fell in the baritone range, he delivered most
songs in the tenor range. His known vocal extended from bass low F (F2) to soprano high F (F6).
Si sapeva come regalare un bel momento e continua a farlo .💛💛💛 grazie Freddie
What an AWESOME reaction/review💕 I pretty much only listen to Freddie... so if you do any more, I'll be here! (I've already been subscribed)
Thanks, I will do more Queen in the future!
great reaction. so honest and emotional Awesome how you get how great they are.Share Queen with other young people.
Just subbed. Loved your reaction❤Freddie was the ultimate front man.Much love from Canada❤🇨🇦
I like how much you love and admire the small things about music. You can just see the excitement in your face lol. You got my sub btw😊
Try white queen live at hammersmith odeon you'll like it
Nice reaction, man☺ Now you really have to react to "white queen" by Queen, at Odeon, Hammersmith in '75. It will blow you away.
I'll check it out!!
Good to see another Aussie here! I'll definitely react to White Queen in the future :)
My suggested Queen reactions=
○ I'm Going Slightly Mad
○ Teo Torriatte (official lyric video)
○ Dragon Attack from Montreal 1981
○ White Queen live Hammersmith Odeon 1975
○ Who Wants to Live Forever live Friday night at Wembley 1986 (different than Saturday's)
My favorite song Freddie sang down in his soul and heart Best frontman. In Rock Roll RIP Freddie
Браво!!!
Freddie said that Somebody To Love was his favourite song as far as writing was concerned.
Thats my favorite song hehehe
Such a good one.
I also love Cool Cat and Action This Day, live version.
you have to do a reaction video from queen - Innuendo!!!!great song!!!
Excellent reaction. More.
This is my second Queen reactions you've done and noticed you start them with "okay let's do it" - - did you notice it's the same thing Freddie says when he starts the main song? I noticed the connection (you&him) during the 1st reaction I watched (YTMBA). 😊
Very good reaction, I have subscribed and will look forward to more!
AWESOME LIVE VERSION ❤
He wanted the live shows to be different than the albums, I think it’s really cool because he makes the concerts so unique but it wasn’t just him it was the whole band.
My favorite part is when Roger sings at the end and Freddie echoes. Just so cool.
React ro White Queen please and you take my breath away.
You will love them even more.
Freddie was phenomenal
I will do, Freddie was a master.
@@CalebColesMusic thank you very much. I love freddie so much many many years..keep up the good work
Great reaction 👍
Freddie once said they mix it up & play songs differently for killer shows.. He said if u want the exact same version stay home & listen to the records.
I remember being utterly mystified when a friend in college had gone to a concert the night before and reported that it was "Great! Sounded exactly like the album!"
Huh? If I wanted to hear a song performed exactly like the album......I'D PUT ON THE FREAKIN' ALBUM! lol
Yeah definitely!
The best two perfomances of this song are Sao Paulo 1981 and Hammersmith odeon 1979, can you please react to the Hammersmith odeon 1979 Somebody to love, you will be absolutely blown away, Freddie takes the song to a whole new level, It's even better than this version.
I'll have to check that out! That era of Freddie between 79 - 81 was incredible.
I like Somebody to Love from Milton Keynes the next year. Really different improv than here.
IMO, the best front man to ever live, & out of all the concerts I went to over the years, QUEEN by far, was the most entertaining, exciting, & satisfying for me!!! Sadly missed & gone way too soon :(.......
Ultimate Rock Band
Would love to see your reaction to Queen "Save Me" from the Montreal 1981 concert as well.
