    I think of all the commercial aircraft I have flown in, the CRJ-200 has the best sounds from an aviation enthusiast's perspective, be it the flaps or what you hear in the cabin from the engine thrust changes, or the gear extension. And of course, the nose-down approach never gets old. Great video of the inaugural!

    I just got over my anxiety as far as flying. But a small jet...for now, I will leave that to you professional flyers. Someone told me you feel the speed/turbulence more in these smaller jets.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  Месяц назад

      Yes, smaller planes have less wing area, and are generally more rigid anyway, so turbulence is generally more pronounced when on a smaller aircraft.

    Joplin regularly got CRJ-700s, ERJ-175, and used to get the ATR-72s from DFW thanks to the takeoff performance issues the smaller, slat-less aircraft have there. I think it was a poor decision to switch EAS carriers to SkyWest because they'll never get better service than they had with AA!
    I remember after the big tornado in 2012, AA sent a fully loaded plane up to Joplin full of relief supplies to help out!

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 года назад +3

      You say that…. And I was a fan of AA for sure. I loved the larger planes and the DFW connection, but think about it. At the end, AA had gone back to the ERJ-140 and were restricting the flights to like 40. When they flew the 145, they sometimes had to restrict it even farther to like 37-39. United/SkyWest on the other hand is giving the city three major hubs, three flights per day vs AA’s one…, and AA didn’t even have a flight 3 days a week at the end. And to my knowledge UA/SkyWest is running without restriction. I’ve been on seven UA/SkyWest flights out of JLN now since they started and they’ve all been 100% full. All 50 seats full. And that’s with JLN having their primary runway out for a complete rebuild. Both runways at JLN are the same length, but I know from when I used to work for Envoy at JLN (this was many years ago now), 13/31, which is the open runway, had worse performance because of the subdivisions on each side. So, you say that, but so far it would appear that SkyWest and United is flying without restrictions, and providing more service than American ever did.

    Great video! Recently, the airfare price went up 23.4%. What was your reaction to that news?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 года назад +1

      My reaction was.... It's finally happened. It's only logical. Basic supply and demand. With travel swigging back up, and the airlines still not quite back to pre-pandemic levels, there are more people wanting seats then are available. So, prices go up.

    An Envoy Air CRJ, huh? At ORD, looks like you bypassed a crowded line up on the starboard side. Does ORD have a dedicated UA Express commuter terminal?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 года назад +1

      SkyWest CRJ actually. Envoy Air is a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Airlines Corporation, so they only fly under the American Eagle brand. SkyWest is an independent regional carrier that flies for American, United, Delta, and even Alaska Airlines. The EAS contract for Joplin is actually through SkyWest Airlines now, and they've agreed to run the contract on behalf of United, using the United Express brand. And you could say United Express basically has it's own terminal at ORD. I've typically flown American into ORD, so I'm more familiar with their terminals, but there were basically only United Express flights flying out of this terminal. They're all connected though, so you can walk from one to the other.

      @@sla31 I noticed the CRJ reg as EV. So, is the plane on lease to SkyWest from AA? Or, is EV another carrier?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 года назад +1

      @@burrisdebenning6655 Ah, I see. Belvie it or not, EV is actually an old ExpressJet Airlines registration. ExpressJet was a casualty of the Covid pandemic and is now defunct. A lot of their aircraft were taken by SkyWest. Envoy's code is actually MQ, which is a hold over from a long time ago when Envoy Air was still American Eagle Airlines, formed by a bunch of smaller airlines including Metro Airlines and Simon Airlines. There's been so many merges and stuff that it's often hard to tell who owns a plane by the tail number.

    • @burrisdebenning6655
      @burrisdebenning6655 3 года назад +1

      @@sla31 Excellent, thank you for the historical context. ExpressJet used to fly out of my region, SBA, with a daily NS to San Diego. That folded along with Allegiant’s pursuit of SBA as a potential destination. They may reconsider and of course there’s always Avelo. WN recently began service there. I really like the Joplin scenery. My family is from further south in Stillwater, OK.

    • @sla31

      They're not the best. As you can see from the video, they are pretty low in the fuselage, and they're pretty far forward. But, they're not the worst I've ever seen. As for the jetways, both at ORD and JLN, they go all the way from the building to the plane. No going outside at either.

    I am honest. I don't really like small jets. I don't like them even more when the engines are not mounted on the wings.
    Joplin. Wasn't that the city that was strucked by a tornado cat 5 some years ago ? Oh my god. I will never ever forget the pictures here on TV. I thought this is the end of the world.......😢
    Beautiful approach with a nice vortex line.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 года назад +1

      Yes. May 22, 2011. It obliterated nearly 1/3 of the city, killed 161 people and injured more than 1,000, making it the deadliest single tornado on record in the U.S. since official records were begun in 1950. I was home that day too. Thankfully, I actually live just west of the actual Joplin city limits, so the tornado hadn't fully formed when it went over my house. I have lived in tornado alley my whole life, and I've never seen the sky so... for lack of a better word... angry... I've been through many storms, and even many tornado warnings, but it was different on that day. It developed out of nowhere, and formed so fast. Then it was rain wrapped, and you couldn't see it coming. The national weather service was only calling for potential severe thunderstorms that day, and really had nothing about tornadoes even listed, and when the super cell formed, it formed so fast that people had very little warning. It was a very bad day. Anyways, thanks for watching my friend. I appreciate it!

      @@sla31 Thanks for explaining all that. It's the first time in my life to hear something like this from an eye witness. I personally think after a tornado your life wont be the same again. You feel so small and powerless against the force of morher nature. For me the worst thing would be to know that something like this could happen again. Joplin Missouri. Jesus Christus.

    The fuel burn at ORD was insane! Starting and stopping on the tarmac plus taxi time and waiting on the runway for clearance--would need a full tank to accomodate the entire flight! That pushback of the CRJ concerned me,thought he would come close to a ground collision! The initial climb seemed achingly slow but thankfully,the pilot revved up the throttle a notch--thick cloud cover coming into JLN, what was that lake we flew over on final? Very odd taxi in to the terminal--I realize one runway is being repaved but would've been shorter had Ground Control ok'd a U-turn on the runway to avoid that long circuitous taxi that occurred--was this your a/c to IAH?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 года назад

      Chicago suffers from the same problem that other airports like Charlotte suffer from. An old hub and spoke terminal design, that leads to lots of ramp congestion. We actually pushed off the gate about 15 minutes late, simply because we were right at the base of the terminal, and the ramp kept getting congested with other flights coming in, or others pushing out. Seems to be luck of the draw on if you get a gate like this. That would be Oscie Ora Acres Lake. Which, honestly I had no idea was even there, and I had to look it up based on our approach to even be able to answer that. Off the top of my head, I'm honestly not sure if I'd ever been on the right side of the plane, landing on runway 13 at JLN before. If I had, it was likely at night. Typically 18/36 (the closed runway) is usually the preferred runway at JLN. As for the taxi in, I don't think a 180 back taxi is ever the preferred solution for ATC if other options are available. Obviously, you minimize the risk of runway incursions the less aircraft are on runways. This is one of the reasons why large airports like DFW and ATL are spending millions of dollars building taxiways that run around runways. It prevents aircraft from having to cross runways altogether. In DFW, you can literally land in Irving, Texas and then have to taxi through several other municipalities, just to get to the terminals. It takes longer, and burns more fuel, but it's statistically safer. And the FAA is all about safety. And yes, this was the same aircraft used for the flight to IAH, which you've already seen.
