Here are the issues I've had with my Super 11, Mill and V10P lathes. I had a switch go bad on the V10P which I fixed with my own parts and a capacitor for the V10P motor which is a standard electronic part. I blew a fiber gear about 40 years ago on the mill pushing through a copper plate for a special job. Never did it again, I learned my lesson!
The balance wheel on the motor of the Super11 came loose and I had to cut a new keyway in it and reattach it. If you turn your lathe on and it sounds louder going on and off then check the pulley. I had a cross slide nut go about 35 years ago but it never happened again. I had a wire connector to one of the capacitors beak down and not make a good connection. The motor wouldn't start without a push from me, check your cap connections if this happens. It was an easy fix, just a new connector.
I've done lots of work and commercial jobs with my machines, they all still run perfectly. The beds are perfect too. With all the work I did the lathes still hold high tolerances.
I did add a motor to the mill to lift and lower the head which saves me a lot of time especially on commercial jobs.
I use the V10P mostly as a milling machine with power cross and bed slides, most of lathe work is on the Super 11 and milling on the V10P where the FB2 mill is attached.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.
Oh I added a magnetic scale DRO to the mill, add one you'll love it! cost me ~$500 Ali.

Thanks for sharing your history - I feel the same, the machines are super compared to the weight. And I of courses added glass scales, can't live without em!

Bought a V10P in 1979 and a Super 11 in 1989, both new. Also have the six speed head. Both have been superb lathes. Last year I added a foot brake to the Super 11. I worked from pics in the parts manual. I have all the original advertising and original parts lists, if you need info.
Not sure if Emco is making small lathes anymore, I think they went to other machines.
I also have the Emco tool post grinder, vise, chucks, steady rest and a few other Emco items. A pleasure to use for many years, good luck with yours!

I just bought a steady rest for my Super 11. I got it from Emco Austria. They actually still sell a version of the Maximat Super 11. It’s called Emcomat 14 D. The steady rest fits exactly and looks like the one in my old catalog from the 70’ or 80’. So I imagine that the bed and the gears are the same. Only color and some sheet metal parts are different. En off cause some electric parts. Grizzly have a copy of the Super 11. But the steady rest was not available at the moment.

That's a real beauty. I bought one last year that is in very good condition, although not as totally mint as yours.
But, now I have a dilemma - I also have a superb condition Emco V10P Mentor, my previous love!
I can't really justify keeping the V10P, since I also have a well equipped Myford ML7 and a little prewar Zyto lathe.
It's a terrible predicament to be in!!
    Cheers Paul in NZ

I have both too, my V10P is where the FB2 mill is attached so it acts basically as a milling machine with cross and bed power. Find an FB2 if you haven sold the V10P yet.

I have a Super 11, bought it new in 1989. Stills runs great. I just added a brake. Emco used to have a brake option but for some reason I never picked it up back then. I went through the exploded view and figured out how to make all the parts, glad I did. I have the original base and splash pan too.
Looks like you have a very clean example there, good luck with it.

It's been working flawlessly, is the original pad available? I wouldn't mind having one.

@@jirvin4505 Jeff, I can't tell you how great the brake is, I use it literally every time I run the lathe. I don't have a video. I can take pics for you if you like and tell you how I did it. Also I have the lathe manual show the parts of the brake system which I used to construct mine. I don't know how Emco shut off the motor but I used an 80 amp solid state relay. If I can help you let me know, mine has been working for two or three years now so I guess I got it right!

Hey nice vid, your machine looks clean! I just got an old one I trained on 30 years ago as an apprentice. I was having trouble with the main rotary switch (red one) so pulled it apart and cleaned up all the contacts. Hoping that fixed the issue. However I might have mislabeled the wires when I pulled it apart so not getting operation.
Was wondering if yours was a 115V machine and if you'd be kind enough to take some close up pictures so I can figure it out. There is a small coil on the switch and I've been second guessing where they connect to.
    cheers

I remember back in 1975, seeing the Emco range ( from Unimat up to Maximat 11 with Milling Head, at an engineering store in Turin ( Italy).
The price of these Austrian made machines was beyond my Pocket at the Time.
Classed as a Laboratory/ Instrument capability lathe, used by Model makers and amateur Astronomers, it found acceptance world wide.
Too bad the company went under in the 2015- 2016?? period. Could not compete against Taiwanese Lathes.( price, not quality).

    Nice job
I have the same lathe and the FB2 mill.

    • @thinkclear5292

      Hello Paul,
I am not sure this is worth a video. But I can give you some hints. The scales I mounted are the standard ones from china.
The Z-axis on the lathe is mounted in front at my lathe because I have the mill attachment in the back. Without the mill attachment I would mount it at the back.
Always mount them with the lip / opening to the bottom because of dust/chips/etc.
Today I would buy smaller scales for the saddle and mount it on the opposite side of the spindle In Stefans channel you can see how he mounted his on the side of the spindle.

I have been looking at the same ones from China.
In the mean time i have made cardboard ones to see how they fit and clash. I actually like the idea of mounting the Z in front below the lead screw. Possibly cleaner there with a deflector and the pickup on the underside of the saddle
Last night i was looking at the saddle and i agree on mounting it on the tail stock side. One possible difficulty is the saddle lock will need modifications and the gib bolts.
I follow Stefan and he does some nice work. I added the tailstock wipes like him.
Im very keen to add the addition.
Thank you for the advice and keep up the good work
      Paul
