It’s a hidden gem, I was there Sunday. That area that you couldn’t go in was found in 2006 when the lawnmower guy saw a sinkhole open up. It was used as solitary confinement at one point. A narrow hall ran along side what looked like 1-2 cells. We turned the lights out and filmed.

I am an airline captain who has spent most of my career based in PHL. I got interested in fort mifflin in the mid 90’s after flying over it all of the time. Fort Mifflin along with the Pennsylvania state navy truly played a pivotal role in in allowing the continental army to retreat to there winter encampment at Valley Forge. The footnote to the story is that the army that retreated to Valley Forge was not the same army that came out after the winter. They spent the winter training, organizing and becoming a professional modern army. All of this was possible because of the defense of the Delaware by Fort Mifflin. Many interesting stories about the entire history of Fort Mifflin. Thanks for posting the video!

I grew up in Southwest Philly back in the 60s. Fort Mifflin was really dilapidated back then. My father and I use to shoot our BB and pellet guns there. I stumbled upon your RUclips channel a few weeks ago. My wife and I stayed at the Summit Hotel in Farmington, PA. We saw your videos and visited Jumanville Glen, Braddock's grave and Fort Necessity while there. I now live in Berks County and I am a math teacher. But I love historical events and visiting historical places. We actually lived on a farm in Mt. Aetna, off of route 501, for a couple of years near where you grew up. You do a great job with your videos. Keep up the great work!

Anyone who would like to see this from the air, get a window seat on the left side of the plane next time you fly into PHL. Unless they reverse approach direction due to winds you get a brief look right before wheels down.
Sparks shot tower is just up the road and is very cool history as well.

I flew my tiny Piper into that airport in 1993-what a trip! Beautiful flight path, as per my airline pilot passenger, who was able to “sightsee” for once!

TAPS was there, investigating alleged haunting, there is tunnel that was found no one knew about it, it was creepy down there. I live in Philly and never been there, I’ll need to go there in the fall when it’s cooler! Happy trails!!

A forgotten gem regrettably. The airport landing strip is literally on the other side of the Fort across the Hog Island Rd. Mifflin probably serves as a marker for the pilots coming in so they are sure of the altitude they need to be at on approach. Federal Land on the other side of the fenced path that is closed off. Thanks for showcasing this historic site that served so well in American History

Fort Mifflin! A super interesting and underrated place. Used to come explore here ever year with my family. Most Philadelphians don't even know of it's existence. You can feel those low flying planes right through your phone, lol. Lots of reported paranormal activity there as well. Glad you are giving the old fort some publicity they have historically suffered from lack of funding. Great video!

I was at Fort Mifflin that place is haunted! I kid you not I never felt such a strong presence of sprits In my life. Lots of death in one of those bunkers where lots of men died from cannon fire. I will never go their at night tours. That was a pretty bad war their. Scared the bejebus out of Me! 😱

I believe that you are correct that all the brick structures are post-Revolutionary War. Most look like the brick fortifications constructed before the War of 1812, then update sporadically until after the Civil War.

I’m a pilot and I always hung around there as a kid bc of the landing aircraft!!! Gotta go to Delaware-PeaPatch Island.
I saw All The forts in the Southern US-more trips, Cliff!!!!!! Southern forts with the walls and moats are more spectacular bc of size!!! You Have to see Fort Mott in Salem near the Delaware Memorial Bridge-(that is where Andrew Cunanan killed the caretaker, who was a civil war reenactor, who is now buried in the civil war cemetery). They have neat lighthouse like towers in that park! Beautiful park. They have big gun turrets on hills there, too. It’s on the river.

While in the area you might want to check out the national cemetery at Finn's Point, NJ. A mass grave for the 2200 Confederate prisoners who died while at Fort Delaware. Also, there about 9 graves off in one corner from WWll of German prisoners who died there.

Theyve had 2 fires. One in the 70s that destroyed the citadel/commandants house in the middle and then a second one recently like 10 years ago that damaged the officers quarters. Both happened during boy scout camping trips...shockingly

Did you see the article where a professor hiking in Nevada was missing for a fee days? He did stay near water and rationed a bar. Left his pack near trail so it could be seen. Wondering if he had a whistle. Do you carry a whistle? It can be blown every so often, thus allerting seekers. Should be worn around the neck to be ready at a moments notice.

Why would they build so close to an airport ? 😁

    • @housemousell
      @housemousell 2 года назад +2

Bc landing strips go with compass headings, prevailing winds determine what landing strips are used. They used all available marsh land build on bc larger aircraft need ILS RUNWAYS, needed for instrument flying. I remember when we could stand on the runways. They tampered with Marsh and swamp land, and, in return, financed the Tinicum Wildlife Reserve. They had to make the runways bigger bc planes got bigger. The bigger the plane, the bigger the engine, the more runway you need to get airborne. That area was nice before the airport took over the place! The poor people that live in the homes on the landing path! I understood the airport? Had to pay to soundproof the homes along the flight path as much as possible. Bet it doesn’t help at all with newest big one!!! Their flight path to Philadelphia Airport is a long one and busy one! I
live in Medford, NJ, and see all the aircraft circling in the sky when it’s busy, depending on the prevailing winds. These new monstrous aircraft are absolutely so loud, no matter their altitude! They look huge from the ground when they are at 2000-3000 ft!
The engines are enormous! I bet they will have to modify that airport again if planes keep getting bigger. I don’t know how their terminals accommodate the largest new aircraft! Blancolirio channel is a pilot of the new large aircraft, and, he has some pics of the inside of the huge planes and the engines, so you can see the size and length of those gas guzzlers! That is why they keep enlarging that airport. That land was all a tidal/flood plain at one time, and a creek.
