i’ve got a question, how does one polish a cylinder when restoring? i’ve restored quite a few but always been scared to polish the cylinder. advice would be helpful!
It depends upon the music box maker. Contemporary pieces have a lacquer finish on the brass cylinder which makes polishing the cylinder more difficult because the lacquer needs to be removed first. The other factor is that cylinder pins are held in place using a resin and harsh chemicals will loosen this resin making the cylinder pins fail. There is actually some tricks to it.
