One of John Williams' greatest scores starts at 2:12. Utterly amazing. It peaks when R2 opens the door to save everybody and they get to the Falcon. It becomes truly beautiful after R2 sets up the smoke screen and comes popping out the other side. Just... wow.
Well the peak affects a certain % of privileged ppl susceptible to goose bumps. There was a science paper on it, regarding the above average intellect of those affected by such rushes aka tingling sensation caused by certain pieces of music.
The part that got to me in retrospect was Leia's look of such emotional sadness when Boba Fett's ship leaves and she knows Han is there and now might be lost forever. This crushed her and you can see the normally resolute princess is stunned for several moments.
Yeah, you're right, that's a great moment in the film. It really hits home that moment; the way Leia watches helplessly as Fett's ship roars away. The look of anguish on her face--married with the sound, action and music of the scene, lays into you an emotional wallop. It adds another weight on top of the stakes that were playing out. In 1980, you didn't know what the future held-- and as bleak as things looked, the whole Cloud City/act of the movie is done so beautifully, that it stirred eagerness, hope, and a strong connection to our heroes.
And afterwards, you can see how done with the empire she is, as she starts to relentlessly shoot every stormtrooper in their way to the point she wouldn't get onboard the Falcon just to get a few more of them out. Because they are the reason Han was taken from her. You can see how hard Lando pulls her out of danger in more than once, because he knows how important she is to Han, and he wouldn't forgive himself if something happened to her. So much emotion and acting in just a single scene. And John Williams describes her desperation throughout all of it with a masterfully crafted piece of music. How wonderful this film is, I can't begin to tell.
it was - I saw this as a double bill with Starwars on it's premiere - I had never seen anything like it at that time. Pure escapism but bleak at the same time.
@@bronson1392 I was there to see Star Wars in 1978 during its re-release. We missed it in 1977. Waiting for each sequel was a test in extreme patience.
This film was released in 1980. Star Wars: A New Hope was released in 1977. Return of the Jedi was released in 1983. Of all of them, The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite. It was a cliffhanger! I remember lines so long they wound around the outside of the theater. When the Millennium Falcon made the jump into hyperspace, the audience was screaming, whistling, cheering and applauding so loudly I'm amazed it didn't knock the roof off! Great memories! ❤❤❤❤
I just noticed that throughout the majority of this scene Lando doesn’t have a blaster, only Chewie and Leia do, but when they’re just about to escape onto the Falcon he suddenly has one and is firing back at the stormtroopers. Also, when the group is ambushed at the beginning and Lando’s people free Chewie and Leia the officer walking at the front is actually Jeremy Bulloch, the actor that plays Boba Fett
One of my favorite parts of the movie! C-3PO is so funny on Chewie's back! In my opinion, I'd say Empire is the funniest out of the three. SW has some really funny stuff, and so does Jedi(even though Jedi's humor is more on the silly side, there are a lot of things that get good laughs out of me) the interaction between characters and delivery of lines is so perfect in this film I find it the funniest.
@@thesmilingman7576 There's definitely a lot to love about the updated changes. Honestly, there wouldn't be too much of an uproar if the original was readily available.
The trumpet crescendo at 3:51 was the number one sound moment (as far as the score was concerned) for me in the whole movie when I was a boy. Something about it resembled the ultimate grandness of the unknowing nature of the future. As if it became the very soundtrack to my life; an opening of the door to the adventure that was yet to come. In a way, it made me feel that anything was possible. I was a terribly abused child. Mentally, physically. Sexually. Psychologically. It was hell. But, many years later, I became professional artist, much to my surprise. Are these things related? Who knows....and the great mystery goes on...
This is how I remember watching it in the cinema in the early 1980s. Although I saw it in May 1983, a good three years after it was released in north america and the west in may 1980, because the country I was living in at the time had a about a 2 and half year delay of any blockbusters released in the west. Due to the small number of English language cinemas. You had to wait some time before the turn of Empire Strikes Back was shown in the cinemas where I was residing at the time. Also it was 70mm not 16mm as shown here but other than that the picture quality is exactly like here. My 9 year old self had the best movie experience ever. Then saw it again in the cinema with the special edition in 1997 as a 23 year old this time in another country in the west so I saw the sp edition as it came out. However the the 1997 version was cleaned up and extra late 1990s computer effects cgi features added to cloud city. The only place to see star wars movies is in the cinema and nowhere else.
Yeah! It's all true my friend, my country is in Southeast Asia. SW come out at theatre in the US in 77 and we here watching it in 79 in our cinema ...ha..ha..ha..
Intense, basal, gripping elements of being human: * friendship (Lando listening to his conscience and converting, all going to retrieve Han, even the droids joy in reuniting); * loyalty (Chewie's outrage at his friend's betrayal, again all going to save their friend); * responsibility (in the heat of the battle Lando calls his people to flee); * love (all of the above, and Leia's look as Fett departs as well as needing to be told to leave - let go, momentarily at least); * courage (doing all of the above despite risk to life)
Wow! Very nice observations. Spot on! I love the whole Bespin/Cloud City sequence. It's where this movie turns to a masterpiece for me. You're wrapped up in the fantasy/fantastic of the film, but it's these humanistic qualities that you so astutely laid out about our heroes that make for a great emotional connection, and investment, to them and the events taking place. In 1980, you longed, worried, yet were reinforced through these qualities on display, ultimately hopeful and eager of what will happen next? ---even though the blow was dealt.
One of my favorite scene from ALL the Star Wars; the mise-en-scene, the editing and of course the music, all come together perfectly, and then Lucas went and mucked it all up with his special editions... this is gold!
I have watched this, not just this video, close to 50 x. the music build, the people reacting build, the Williams music build, the danger build. man! I get emotional still! holds up!
Me, too. I prefer the original to the dubbed in scenes I didn't see in the theater. Why does Hollywood always have to fix stuff that was never broken in the first place?
Wonderful! The cinematography looks so much darker on this original version and the spaces more claustrophobic- exactly the intent. Lucas corrupted the SE version it looks brighter with more open space exactly the opposite of what was happening in the story. Irvin Kershner and Peter Suschitzky knew what they were doing George Lucas did not!
Notice that Leia is shooting stormtroopers so ferociously that Lando has to remind her to keep going twice. I didn’t consider it before, but now I realize Leia is taking all her rage about Han out on those troopers.
The original is still so so much better. Why change something that is already great. This classic clip brings back beautiful memories of watching Star Wars as a child. I so miss those days.
Disney need to make 4k scans of these available on plus. Williams score is a masterpiece set to the original. The inserts of the remastered versions add nothing and throw off the score. I know the movie by heart and it drives me nuts every time I watch…
They accidentally put two right hands in the collection of Threepio parts. There is a second right hand tucked behind Threepio's shoulder when Lando frees them, but it's later replaced with the correct left hand by the time Artoo is successfully opening the door to the landing platform.
Chewie and Leia should realize that Lando isn't entirely to blame for what happened to Han. Han did bring this on himself. If he had paid off Jabba when he had the chance, this wouldn't have happened. Han may have been helping the rebellion against the empire but he knows that to Jabba, that's no excuse. The rebellion against the empire means nothing to guys like Jabba.
Although i've grown accustomed to the special editions, it's nice to see the original cut that I grew up with. Watching it now, it doesn't feel wrong that the special scenes are missing. Normally if I watch the special edition of any movie I would never be able to watch the original again. Not so with OG Star Wars.
Not to further dogpile on the special edition of this, but Leia's "trust you?!" to Lando is almost completely drowned out by Chewie's overmixed roar. Here, in the original, you can hear every word she's saying, like you're supposed to.
As C-3PO would say "WONDERFUL WONDERFUL" I enjoyed every minute of it. this video brought back memories of my favorite SW original trilogy episode so MAY THE 4the BE WITH guy. YOU. :))
C3PO and R2D2 have not been seen together since they were on Hoth and after that they’re not seen together again for most of the movie, but they’re finally reunited in this scene.
I love the subtlety of Artoo still smoking from the earlier access failure when he tries to open the second door. Disney Star Wars would either do it in a much more ham-fisted way in an attempt at cheap comedy, or wouldn't put in such a continuity detail.
It's literally footage from the same shot. If you skip from 2:41 to 3:09, they just cropped around R2 to replace the background. It likely wasn't intentional continuity as much as an editor saying "eh, good enough".
I didn't realize it at the time, but if the security code hadn't been changed, they probably would have left onLando's ship since there is only one door to the platform with the Millenium Falcon.
It always annoyed me that Leia and Chewie got so mad at Lando after he freed them. As he said, he really didn't have any choice. If he had defied Vader then the Empire would simply have blown Cloud City out of the sky in retaliation and murdered the several hundreds of innocent people there. Did the rebels believe they were more important than those people, the very people they're fighting to save from tyranny? As soon as he had an opening, Lando rescued them. He never wanted to betray them, he just had to weigh up the lives of two human, one Wookie and two droids against the lives of everyone else he was responsible for as Clod City's administrator and, imo, he made the only choice his conscience would let him. Five lives, two of them mechanical, against hundreds. What other choice could he have made?
Chewie (choking Lando): oh, no you don’t, Lando! (0:36) Lando: I had no choice! Chewie: (while 3PO speaks) oh, is that right? (0:39) Leia: oh, we understand, don’t we, Chewie? Chewie: yeah! (0:42) Leia: he had no choice! Chewie: (while Lando speaks) Why, Lando! (0:45) Leia: we don’t need any of your help! Chewie: yeah! (0:47) Lando: Han! Chewie: say what?! (0:49) (while Lando speaks) Why, Lando?! (0:51) Lando: there’s still a chance to save Han Chewie: Where?! (0:59) Lando: at the East… Chewie: go on! (1:01) Lando: …platform! Chewie: okay! (1:03) Leia: Chewie! Chewie: let’s move! (1:04)
I always loved that image of Chewbacca off to the side, blasting at Slave 1. It's secondary because you're looking at Leia. On a side note, I don't like what Lucasfilm does with Wookies since. Chewie should be the template of what a Wookie is. What they look like. Now, they have evolved to look like Harry from Harry and the Hendersons. Cone Heads. He is not a sasquatch, but what else could we expect when you have people who are completely clueless about Star Wars, making Star Wars. Even prequel Wookies were too thick imo
Unfortunately the original video was taken down again. On the bright side, I downloaded all three movie files back in December so it's not completely lost media.
The original untampered versions are WAY better. These first time reactors on RUclips to the original trilogy still have not truly seen Star Wars if they haven’t seen the theatrical originals. Speaking of which, I really hope that someday they will be released. Thank you so much for providing this.
"We're not interested in the hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon, it's fixed!" ("That's what I'm trying to tell you! According to THIS, it's NOT fixed!")
Looks light-years better than that rubbish 4k disc bluray com format disc. bring on the grain structure and grain dislikers Sod off go and play with rubbish 4k discs. Film is the original medium having done projection at UCI and Warner Bros in the late of the last century when real cinemas existed not these rubbish 4k 8k cinemas that are soulless.
You can't NOT enjoy "The Empire Strikes Back". The Star Wars movie 🎥 that got changed the least in Lucas' Special Edition and one of the three movies of the 20th century that can tell you what we were like best (other two are "The Wizard of Oz" and "Hook") in my humble opinion.
If only the prequels were like this. Every time I see this scene, it makes me wish that the Rebels had the Separatist droid army to fight the Imperial stormtroopers.
2:33 What is that arm Artoo tries to use on the power socket? If he mistook it for a computer terminal, why wasn't he trying to use the arm he normally uses for those? That always confused me about this scene
That shot of Boba Fett silhouetted against the sunset as Han is placed in the cargo hold is pure villainy in the best way. What a masterpiece.
Wait! Turn around u woolie hahaa

Those mate paintings look better than all the cgi added in 1997.
Hooray for Boba Fetts proper voice

On a side note, I don't like what Lucasfilm does with Wookies since. Chewie should be the template of what a Wookie is. What they look like.
Now, they have evolved to look like Harry from Harry and the Hendersons. Cone Heads. He is not a sasquatch, but what else could we expect when you have people who are completely clueless about Star Wars, making Star Wars. Even prequel Wookies were too thick imo
Joshua 1:9 along with John 3:16 are both my favourite verses in the Bible. Well done!!
Unfortunately the original video was taken down again. On the bright side, I downloaded all three movie files back in December so it's not completely lost media.
0:22 Billy beez saying you're not going to take me down like that
This has to be the only "Disney" film where someone gets choked on camera for 30 seconds straight. Lando's a trooper
The original untampered versions are WAY better.
These first time reactors on RUclips to the original trilogy still have not truly seen Star Wars if they haven’t seen the theatrical originals.
Speaking of which, I really hope that someday they will be released.
Thank you so much for providing this.
I wish Pryor and Nolte played Lando and Han.
the special editions changes for Empire are not terrible
"We're not interested in the hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon, it's fixed!"
("That's what I'm trying to tell you! According to THIS, it's NOT fixed!")
I saw that dude running by with an ice cream maker. 🍧🍦🍨😋👍
Although I love the way technology has evolved, I do still wish that movie theaters nowadays could use film prints.
Modern cinemas with 'digital' projectors simply don't have the contrast ratio of film - it looks dull and lifeless.
Perfection
You can't NOT enjoy "The Empire Strikes Back". The Star Wars movie 🎥 that got changed the least in Lucas' Special Edition and one of the three movies of the 20th century that can tell you what we were like best (other two are "The Wizard of Oz" and "Hook") in my humble opinion.
Thanks for that verse
If only the prequels were like this.
Every time I see this scene, it makes me wish that the Rebels had the Separatist droid army to fight the Imperial stormtroopers.
Put Captain solo in the cargo hold
ESCAPE TO FREEDOM FROM TYRANNY ! ...
1:12 nostalgic just nostalgic
Jeremy Bulloch is in the beginning of this scene
What happened to the original versions of these films?
*"RAAAAAAUGHHH!!"* ~ Chewie
2:33 What is that arm Artoo tries to use on the power socket? If he mistook it for a computer terminal, why wasn't he trying to use the arm he normally uses for those? That always confused me about this scene
Tears 2022
