Beautiful work but I wanted to cry when you wiped all them wood cut offs into the trash. :( Those could have been used in another project and I certainly would have. Thinking something wood and resin. - Heidi
I bought a homemade one of these at our church garage sale years ago. I think someone said it had been a boy scout project. I still enjoy watching it. I might have to get my hubby to make another one.
How fun !!! You brought back some very special memories for me - my Dad used to make these wind spinners all the time and I have missed them and him for a very long time. Thanks for the wonderful memories you have resurrected for me.
Hey Michael, that's good to hear! I've never had one of these before. Thought it was a cool project with a huge payoff when it starts spinning. What a wonderful memory!
Look like a good fan. I bought one for new new workshop I'm working on. And free shipping too. I think I'll make a spinner for my wife when I get up and running.
Hi Steve - Well, what a great video! We received a windspinner similar to yours as a gift and I wanted to see how far to turn each slat. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation - I bet you are fun to hang with! Did you know that you smile the whole time you're talking? It makes you come across and friendly and approachable. Thank you for the demo, and I can't wait to hang our windspinner outside!
What a great comment and Ellen, you hit the nail right on the head there with everything you said! Kudos!! 👍I’d buy the “already cut” version if Steve sold it!
I’m going to make my own here soon…great, clear instructions! I had gotten a rather large one like you made probably 20 yrs ago at a craft fair ($45 even then!) but it got damaged in a move😢. But I’m fairly certain the wood pieces looked GLUED! Would that work as well or do you think it might have just been a filler of some sort they used to seal between the pieces? Over the entire piece it had a type of high shiny varnish or polyurethane coating as well. I think for craft fair projects keeping it flexible so it can be flattened would be a good selling point for moving & storage purposes though. Might still have mine had I been able to do that!
Steve Carmichael same effect on your pull cord too, very cool. Hey man I’ve just got my first lathe and haven’t done anything since a mallet in high school 20+ years ago. I’m working on making some HDPE blanks, but what project would you recommend as a starter?
Really nice design and the color combination is off the wall! I love all your work Steve....i know I say that every time but your upbeat attitude and easy presentation is just contagious. You made me want to go make a wind spinner..... maybe tomorrow since is 12:30am!!! Tiles what am I doing awake!?!? Take care my friend!
Well, Starving Youngun, if that fan is going to keep you cool down THERE it better be able to drag up a glacier and grind it at the same time! I just got through fixing the fan in the greenhouse so these politickal wind gusts wouldn't blow it out in the floor anymore. Good timing but the old boxless fan is still wheezing along. NICE spinner, by the way! Keep cool, Bud! It was 80 here today and blowing snow night before last. Mercy!
Hey Lewie! Thanks! Good to hear snow is in the past for you, well for now. We also got new insulated garage doors, so with the new fan, I'm hoping to not look like an old sweaty man in my videos this Summer, just an old man. lol
The insulated doors were a GOOD move. They won't melt down quite as fast as non-insulated but you'll be fine. YOu can always go jump in the freezer for a few minutes and you're not old at all. Just 'drummed out' a little bit! C U, Pal!
Thanks! I took it down when we had our house painted and need to put it back up. We rarely got enough wind to spin it though. I think a lighter wood like cedar would help with the spinning.
These are the first ones I have ever made one 36 inch and one 24 inches cherry and the other light wood from old skids, my wife liked them a lot, they are nice to watch, thanks
Me at the beginning of the video: Woodworking videos sure are getting weird - this guy is making a wind spinner and installing a box fan in one video? Me at the end of the video: ......................... oh Brilliant :D
G’day Steve, this is a cooling sort of video mate & im glad you’ve recovered from drinking that epoxy 🤗🥃 otherwise you may of landed on hard times 👍🔨👍🔨
Nice project. I replicated it, for the most part. Only changes I made were: 1)using a cap nut at the top with a hole through it for the swivel, 2) 28 1/2" x 9 3/4" dimensions. Unfortunately mine will not spin at all. Is there something you can offer as possible cause and a remedy? Thanks.
Very nice spinner, it turned out great! When using the swivel, what do you hang it on then? A string or some twine? Or do you hang it on something more stable, like an eye hook screwed into a board? Thanks
I didn't really measure, just cut them by eye since I was going to trim it anyway. I would guess that I cut some of the 10" pieces into 3" and 7" pieces, and also two 5" pieces.
What size Barrel Swivel did you use...have a size 1 on mine and chain hanger but not spinning very well....going to go to twine later to see if that changes....just curious what size barrel swivel you are using
Hi Gary - I paused the video and it looks like the pkg says SZ 1 if that helps. I later put on a dog leash swivel that worked a little better. You can get those at a hardware store or just take one off a dog leash.
Nice one Steve looks great, and with all those cut offs you could have done a mini one ha ha ha. See you are getting our weather? and somehow i don't think that the discount would apply to me over here? prob cost more than the fan for delivery ha ha ha. Barry (ENG)
Very cool project Steve! I am curious as to what keeps all those individual pieces of wood from moving out of shape since you did not glue them? Anyway, great job.............. :)
Hey, yes it is! Good catch! I had to go back and watch that video to check. lol Love the drum beat and sound of the snare on that song. It's one of the best generic youtube background songs.
I've noticed the Sprayberry license plate. What part of Ga are you in? Love the project. I was looking for something to do with the little ones and this might be the one!
Beautiful work but I wanted to cry when you wiped all them wood cut offs into the trash. :( Those could have been used in another project and I certainly would have. Thinking something wood and resin. - Heidi
Thanks Heidi! I still have them, would you like me to ship them to you? I would like to see what you can do with them.
That is really tempting. How much would the shipping be?
How about free! email me at thecarmichaelworkshop@gmail.com and I'll send it tomorrow!
That's awesome! Will do. :D Thanks!
BlackCat2 I was thinking that too, lol. I immediately thought checker board or cutting board.
Nice build Steve! It’s mesmerizing to watch it spin.
Thank you Ben! Yeah, it looks really neat in the video for some reason, like the lines are messing with the camera or something.
I bought a homemade one of these at our church garage sale years ago. I think someone said it had been a boy scout project. I still enjoy watching it. I might have to get my hubby to make another one.
Cool! This would make a good scout project.
Oh, why don't you make one for him? :)
Prety nice spinner . I like the effect it has when it spins
Very Beautiful and Interesting! I could watch it spin for hours😎😎😎😎😎😎
It does look pretty cool. Not much wind around here lately though. I used the leaf blower on it yesterday. lol
But it's a good thing, it force you to get the leaf blower out and while tou're at it, why don't use it to blow leaves :))
Great build Steve! I built my wife one of these many years back. Now I’ve got a few new ideas. Thanks !
Thanks Donny!
What a wonderful memory!
for crying out loud...who are the 3 people that could give this man and this video a thumbs down? Great job Steve!
Thanks Mike! It's ok, RUclips analytics indicates an increase in dislikes with a green arrow instead of red, so they must consider it a a good thing.
We had one of these 20 years ago. My wife loved it. I may need to do this. Hmmm. Mother’s Day is coming up.
MANCRAFT IT! lol, you should make one or three.
Steve Carmichael based on the tongue drum build 3 might be a safe bet. 😁
Steve, thanks for making/showing how. My mother had one years ago. Nice reminder.
Oh that's neat. Glad to spark a good memory for you.
Nice spinner... and a great shop fan....
Allways a clean shop and dust free with that air flow 😀👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks! It works great. It's nice having a fan up high.
That’s really cool, very hypnotic watching it spin.
Thanks Richard!
Beautiful! I love the different colored woods you used. I could watch that spin all day.
Look like a good fan. I bought one for new new workshop I'm working on. And free shipping too. I think I'll make a spinner for my wife when I get up and running.
Cool! The fan is great, especially since it's off the floor. Maybe you could make one with your wife. :)

Another great video Steve. Kind of hypnotic to watch it spin.
Thanks Dale! Yeah, it makes this cool downward movement illusion that's really weird.
I have been looking for some small wood working projects to do
Looks like a fantastic project to make out of scrap wood! Nice work Steve!
I like this project. Might have to make one. 👍🏻
Do it man, it's a fun quick project. Wifey likes it too.
Ur freaking awesome Steve. Cool project, especially when its spinning.
Thanks! lol, it looks like it's moving downward as it spins...like an illusion or something. Didn't expect that.
That was fan tastic
Thanks!!!
The wind spinner looks awesome. Nice work, Steve.
Thanks! It's cool when it spins.
Outstanding
Nice wind spinner Steve. Thanks for sharing .
Super. Thank you.
Thanks! I still have this. I had to take it down when we got the house painted...need to put it back up.

Very cool Steve! I'm diggin' the knob for the pull chain!
Sweet badge replacement on your car there, Steve! Awesome project too, it looks so cool to watch!
Thanks! The close up was my wife's car, it's newer.
Steve Carmichael same effect on your pull cord too, very cool. Hey man I’ve just got my first lathe and haven’t done anything since a mallet in high school 20+ years ago. I’m working on making some HDPE blanks, but what project would you recommend as a starter?
Awesome project Steve, i think i will make a couple for my porch
I've got this one hanging on my porch. See it spinning out of the corner of my eye occasionally.
Very good 👍
I think I will make one of these for the garden :) Thank you Steve ॐ
Awesome! It's a half-day project at the most. Really easy.
Nice build Steve, you are always very entertaining
Thanks Bob!
Another Awesome Video Steve !
Thank you very much!
Take care my friend!
that came out really nice!!!!! I might need to make one this summer!
Thanks! Do it!
Looks awesome I think I may be gathering some scraps and giving it a go thanks
Cool, do it! It's fun.
Yet another brilliant build video. I enjoy your build videos, they are very inspring. Thanks
Great project, Steve!
Hey Sean! Thanks!
Loved this project, Steve, You always come up with some good ones.
Thanks for sharing!!!!
Thanks Felix!
I love it. I love your videos. Thanks for making them!
Thank you Mariano!

Love it that's pretty 😍
Nice job just stumbled on your website and few days ago

Awesome looking!
Great video, thank you for continuing to make videos! I'm always looking forward to the next one.
Thanks, I appreciate it! I'm a little slower at it these days but I have a long list of ideas to do. More coming soon!
Nice choice of materials and a great video, Steve!
Thanks!
fantastic work
Just what I was looking for, great video thankfully there was that fan to help in the end 😉
Thanks! I took it down when we had our house painted and need to put it back up. We rarely got enough wind to spin it though. I think a lighter wood like cedar would help with the spinning.
@@SteveCarmichael still wood look really good though
Very interesting design!
Thanks!
Awesome video Steve! Great job with the project and with the video!
Thanks Rusty!
That's pretty cool, Steve.. and I have a brand new porch deck that we have been working on to try one of these out on....
Nice!!
Love it Steve. Great project! In England that weather is BBQ time! lol
Thanks John! Anytime is BBQ time for me.

Thanks!
Great looking project
Thanks Al!
Nice little project, Steve!
Me: That's nice, Steve, how'd you do that?
Steve: The answer's blowin' in the wind.
:)
Very nice I am going to make one thank
Cool! Enjoy it Harvey. It's fun seeing it spin for the first time.
These are the first ones I have ever made one 36 inch and one 24 inches cherry and the other light wood from old skids, my wife liked them a lot, they are nice to watch, thanks
I love how you edit dude. Great project!!
Thank you Eloy! That means a lot coming from you man. I am trying to do something new every time.
Cool looks great. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Karen!
It is cool !
Thanks Jonh!
You should make a few Steve and open a shop in "The Windy City" I see a few $$$$ on the horizon lol
I might make some for my Etsy store. Maybe a smaller version that's easier to ship.
Cool project Steve! Thanks for sharing it with us.😎👍JP
Thank you!
You're very welcome Steve! 😎
Awesome project Steve!
Thanks Keith!
Me at the beginning of the video: Woodworking videos sure are getting weird - this guy is making a wind spinner and installing a box fan in one video?
Me at the end of the video: ......................... oh
Brilliant :D
Easy but cool! Anyone can make one.
Thanks! Yep, that's right!
I may just need to make one now!
Do it Jonathan! I keep looking out the window at it during the day hoping to catch it spinning.
👍👍👍👍very nicely done!!!!
G’day Steve, this is a cooling sort of video mate & im glad you’ve recovered from drinking that epoxy 🤗🥃 otherwise you may of landed on hard times 👍🔨👍🔨
Yep, all is well here. Just a little dizziness from watching this thing.
Fun easy project to use scraps on. Love this. Great job. Thumbs up and new sub. Great channel. Love the bluetooth speaker you made.
Great video! May have to do this one.
Thank you Missy!
Beautiful!
What are the best swivels to use , what size, I have problems with the ones I've tried. Thank you for a reply.
I love your videos, can you make another 10 easy projects video. And tell us where you got the templates. You're the best!
Thank you Dmitriy! Yes, I plan to do another one of those this year, probably around September. I design my own templates in Microsoft Visio.
Steve Carmichael oh nice! Can't wait!
So cool Steve, hee heeee!!! :D
Hi Cy! Thanks!
I prefer your sticker fan, ok it doesn't turn too much air but it's way cool....lol
Maybe I should get a faster motor for the sticker spinner. lol All the stickers would be a blur.
Thanks.
I've tried different swivels and ended up using a dog leash clasp that swivels with some grease.
Pretty cool
Thank you Samuel!
Very nice spinner, it turned out great!
When using the swivel, what do you hang it on then? A string or some twine? Or do you hang it on something more stable, like an eye hook screwed into a board?
Thanks
No glue after you moved the pieces into position? Did you respray it with finish when the pieces were in position?
I tightened the stack between the nylock nuts and the pieces won't budge. All surfaces were already sprayed so no need.
GREAT BUILD ....WHAT DIFFERENT LENGTHS DID U USE FOR THE SHORTER ONES?
I didn't really measure, just cut them by eye since I was going to trim it anyway. I would guess that I cut some of the 10" pieces into 3" and 7" pieces, and also two 5" pieces.
Very cool, Steve. A fairly easy and entertaining project. Even a numbskull like me could do this. Well done, sir!
Thanks Tim! LOL, it is a pretty easy project. Only takes a few hours. Drilling 70 centered holes was the only tedious part.
GreT job.

Barry (ENG)
Hi Barry! Thanks! It's sunny today. Not sure about the fan discount in other places, just try it to see.
i love ur videos bro♥️👏🏼
Thank you La King!
Well, that works great! I've never really inspected one of these before, are they typically made so you they can be laid out flat? 🤓👍
I think it's nice to be able to store it flat. The nuts on the ends tighten them down so they can't move.
Very cool project Steve! I am curious as to what keeps all those individual pieces of wood from moving out of shape since you did not glue them? Anyway, great job.............. :)
You just tighten the nuts on the ends and squeeze them together. They don't budge. This way you can always loosen them and store it flat.
Is that the same song you used for the Whack a Woodworker Whirligig video?
Hey, yes it is! Good catch! I had to go back and watch that video to check. lol Love the drum beat and sound of the snare on that song. It's one of the best generic youtube background songs.
20 lb bass on your last fishing trip?.....i think it was 22 lbs....lol....like your project, but all those cutoffs....have a great weekend Steve..
Honestly, I haven't been fishing in years. Need to go. I miss it.
A sphere graph art
I've noticed the Sprayberry license plate. What part of Ga are you in? Love the project. I was looking for something to do with the little ones and this might be the one!
Hey, i grew up in marietta, but now in lawrenceville.
Wath size is the hole? Please
Got a question for you, @Steve: Are you a Van Halen fan?? ;-)
