My best friend got me two hermit crabs for my birthday, and I’ve never owned them. I’ve always had shrimps, fish and snails. I’m binge watching all your videos to make sure I get all the information I need so they can live for a long time.
My mom brought me a hermit crab home from myrtle beach as a gift, he was brought to me in a small critter keeper with no substrate, I know he's been through hell, I've been watching all your vids so I can hopefully give him the life he should have never been taken from, Thanks for doing these videos
@@CrabCentralStation maybe you can give me some advice or peace of mind, of course I rescued one to keep my myrtle beach one company and they were pretty happy together for about week, they were eating alot and soaking in their bowls, my new one went down been under 4 days now, I'm sure it's probably doing a molt, but my original I'm concerned, he hasn't ate in 3 days and just sits in his tree, I have a camera on the tank so I watch em all night off and on and he only changes position in the one spot, I'm so concerned and I just don't know what to do, They are currently in a 10 gallon but of course I got a huge 55 gallon I want to move them, but those plans are on hold with the one under, any advice??
@@CrabCentralStation Also one more quick question, is purified drinking water ok for the fresh water bowls? I use instant ocean half cup per gallon for brackish and I use dechlor for a gallon to clean shells or use to cook their food, should I also be using dechlor for their fresh water instead of the purified drinking water? Is dechlor as good as prime? I plan on getting prime when I get paid, again I am new to this but just want to provide the best for my crab babies, thank you
I never knew the tank could be too humid! In hindsight, my crabitats have been overly humid plenty of times. I just put my crab in a brand new set up (after binging some of your vids) and I will definitely prevent that from happening in the future!
I have been struggling to keep temp and humidity up. Especially in the winter time, my house is super drafty and temp became a huge problem, but I was able to stabilize temps using some insulation foam pads, and layers of bath towels I have been trying every trick possible to keep humidity in and in the level zone the Hermies need. The issue I had was there was too much humidity at first, then id open the lid just slightly to let it vent, but then the humidity would drop way down. I have been able to figure out proper humidity levels, but then there was the issue of fogging and drops of water falling in food dish and ruining their food. I bought the wrong type of tank that has a mesh lid that slides over the top instead of just lifting it off, so some of the ways to seal the lid would not work. I decided to try and shrink wrap the top of the lid, which has helped with about 90% of the fogging. I made a tiny slit on the top of the lid to allow some air flow. I haven't noticed any real drop in humidity, and hopefully this truck will work. What do you think?
I'm a longtime crab owner and somehow still learning! I've owned my hermits for six or so years and had no idea about some of these things! Wowzer! Your videos never cease to surprise and educate me soso much, thank you!
I'm currently having an issue after all these years with a few of my hermits, all my research led me to this video! Two of my small quarter/quarter sized hermies have been hanging around limp in the water dish lately, and I thought it was for the sake of getting ready to molt but I think the humidity is too high, or too low!
I love this! Thank you so much for joining us on your journey. It is so true, we area ALL learning all the time! These creatures have so much to teach us. We appreciate your support, thank you for watching!
I will have to keep this video in mind if I run into any problems! You are sooo knowledgeable and I love learning new things! Thank you for putting in the time, effort and knowledge in all these videos!!!
Good question! Hermit crabs have modified gills. They breathe the moisture (humidity) in the air, not the air itself. The oxygen exchange that takes place during feeding and water changes is enough air for them.
Hi chelsy! Welcome aboard! We do not have anything of the sort (but thanks for the idea!) we do have a website www.crabcentralstation.com where we post blogs, however!
My son dad bought him hermit crabs for his birthday my son is 3 and I’m binge watching all your videos because we’ve lost some hermit crabs 😩and I don’t want to lose anymore . I bought so much stuff today but I’m taking it back thanks to your other video and ordering off Amazon ... maybe you guys can make a video where you get shells too . I got a cage and the top has mesh
Hi! We do have a video on shells, but we purchase shells mainly from www.theshellstore.com for the mesh top you can cover it in press and seal or Saran Wrap or put glass on top.
I have been struggling with keeping both humidity and temp regulated. We’ve been trying way too many things. Even heating the room, wet washcloths, having to wet them twice a day! Moss, moving water against heat pads.. etc! We recently just moved them into a glass 10 gallon long. And I was hoping that would take care of the issues but it did not. SO my question is, can I use a thermostat INSTEAD of heat mats??!!!! That would be amazing to only have the thermostat and bubbler plugged in! Thanks! Also purchased a air pump to hopefully take care the humidity level! It’s just fluctuates so much!
its so weird to think about this, my aunt is a vet and her crab just passed after 10 years. he had a tank that was less than a 10 gallon, no pools, only was fed crab food powder and he was huge and she only bought shells for him 10 years ago and never after that. and I think it was a fish tank heater or something and not a heat pad... its so crazy
Thanks for joining us at Crab Central Station! A bacterial bloom happenes when substrate becomes too saturated and trapped. Bacteria grows in that type of environment.
Thank you for responding to other posts. How is your new baby crabs you adopted from Mary. Also is there other people on here doing the same thing. On youtube?
Our "Mary's babies" are doing GREAT! They are so super cute! There are some other folks with hermit crab care videos... but their care recommendations differ from ours in some ways.
I don't think you remember me but a few months ago i got two hermit crabs. This morning when I woke up one of my crabs switch shells. Starting off my tank humidity was 75/85 but now my humidity is 92. I think it's because of my bubbler. I don't have a regulator but I turned it off. I also airing out the tank. I need to get a glass lid. Just plastic wrap for now
I would look into getting a regulator, they are very inexpensive and easy to install. They are small nozzles that you add to the airline tubing that has a small knob on it so that you can control the amount of air being pumped in. I think I bought a pack of regulators for about 2 bucks at Walmart.
I got two hermit crabs from Myrtle Beach and as soon as i put it in the crabitat, one buried itself in the middle, its veen there for two days, im scared it has died but with 6 inches of substrate i dont want to disturb it, how long should i wait. Im correcting the humidity as its been at 87% but 75 degrees. Any pointers
You gotta leave him alone, he’s just molting. He wasn’t able to before since at beach stores they don’t have any substrate to bury themselves in. He’s fine!!
Foggers will definitely raise your humidity which may be why your crabbies are out and about when it is on. However, it can lead to other issues like mold, mildew, bacteria outbreaks, and over time floods. There are safer ways to get that ideal humidity maintained consistently without using a fogger.
Hi! Your videos are so helpful! I would love to know what supplies you used for your pool and what sphagnum moss you used! Also what sand do you mix in with eco earth?
Hi! We use 2.5 gallon water pools but you can use any container that will fit in your tank. We also use filters inside our pools but those are optional. For the sphagnum moss, I’m not sure what we used but any natural sphagnum moss that isn’t died or decorative is safe to use.
Hi again I don't want to bother u, but I'm having trouble with my humidity levels in my tank it's staying over the 90s the temperature is staying around 75. Their climbing net I bought is molded and the food keeps getting mold on it. Can u please help with this thanks
Hi Shirley, to help you I will need to ask several questions: is your substrate the 5:1 play sand to eco earth? Did you put it in your tank dry? Do you mist or use a fogger/humidifier? How big is your tank and how big are your pools?
Great video! I have found success with a humidifier, very easy to use :D Also, it's great for people coming in to take care of them when I'm not at home. Edit: It is from outside of the tank and leads the mist inwards, and because it has a dial I can adjust the amount that goes in. No problems with flooding or condensation so far :D
Where did you get the tank and lid? I’m getting hermit crabs soon and just watching your videos to see tips on them😁 also where do you get the shells and what do you use for their substrate/bedding?
I have the typical reptile screen lid. I need to cover to keep the humidity in. Should I use plexiglass? Should I cut a round hole for the UVB light to penetrate?
Yes! You can use plexiglass. However, you would need to find a way to attach the UVB light inside the tank. Cutting a hole will allow too much heat and humidity to escape the tank. You want a completely sealed tank.
Is it possible to put a small heating pad on the side, but below substrate level in order to help release some moisture from the substrate in the corner??
Hi! I wouldn’t recommend putting a heating pad below the substrate level. You actually need the moisture from the substrate to help keep molt caves secure while a crab is molting.
@@CrabCentralStation I had a bad humidity gauge, I’m now up in the high 90s for humidity 😬😬😬 I’m going to let my substrate dry out a bit and see what else can be done. All my crabs seem active and healthy for now so if I can get it down by the end of the week hopefully they will be fine.
Hello, great tips. I have a mesh lid but want to get a top with lighting. could you give me advice on what type of lid I need? I have to mist my tank to keep the humidity up
Hello, I just purchased a 20 gal. Reg. I don't mind buying it sep. Yet I want it to look nice due to it being in my living room. I dont like having to shine a flash light at night to see them so, I'm looking for the best lighting. I just covered my mesh with press n seal and placed the therm on a few sticks off the substrate. prior I would cover with towels and put the therm. On top of mesh under the towels. TIA
Hi Darcy! I think there might be a problem with that thermometer. I set it to 85° Fahrenheit like you said to do and it only went up to 80° and then it went back down to 77. Do you know why it's not going up to 85° like I programmed it for?
Could be.... 1. Your tank needs to be insulated 2. The room the tank is in is so much cooler than the tank that the heat mat can only warm the tank to 80°F (which is a good and safe temperature). 3. You may need more decor on the tank. The heatmat heats the air and items in the tank. The more items to warm... the more heat (wood decor is good for this) 4. You may need more substrate. Because you are warming the air... if you decrease the amount of space/air the heater has to heat... the warmer it will get. Try those things! I hope these ideas help 😁
Mold 😔😞😩🥺😣 what do I do about mold on my canopy that I have for him? Can I just boil it in vinegar or something ? Then let it dry ? And put it back after I clean and replace substrate? It’s like something for him to climb on it adds a second floor to his tank. Thank you .
Hello rickytocoolforu. The best thing we have found to help with this issue is: 1. clean the canopy well in water 2. soak it in a bowl of hermit crab salt water 3. let it completely dry 4. place it in the tank OFF the substrate and away from the pools. The extra moisture from the pools and substrate is what causes the mold to grow. Hope this helps!
Hermit crabs do like to dig and tunnel. If you have had your crabs for awhile and they are always staying buried, I would check the heat and humidity. Make sure you are using a digital Guage and ace it in the middle of your tank about 2-3 inches off the substrate. We turn a small container upside down and sit our Guage on top.
I’m having a hard time keeping my substrate nice and moist in this dry Ohio winter air. My humidity runs pretty much fine, but the sand is slowing drying out.
What do you suggest for crabs of diff species? I have a purple pincher and an Ecuadorian... I didn’t know it was a thing when the pet store sold them To me ... oops. Figured hermit crab was a hermit crab... silly me
We always recommend having at least one partner of the same species for your hermit crabs. If you’re able to, we highly recommend adopting one more of each of the species you have so they have a species partner and aren’t lonely 😊
Great to hear you have some friends for them! For heat and humidity for your tank you would want to keep it at 85% humidity and 85°F heat because that’s what the Ecuadorians need. The purple pinchers also can be with that heat and humidity
Hello it's getting cold where I live do you think you could do a video on heat? Because that is drastically changing off and on and we are afraid they might die? Also could you do signs of molting I think one of them is about too because they keep changing shells that are always too small, but he has already been down under before but kept coming up every other day or two. And if I don't have filtered water bowls how long do I need to change them
Yes! We agree, this is a great topic as we enter the winter months! Thanks 😊 Crabs change shells as they like, and some seem to like to change more often than others. Best thing we can do is to make sure we offer many choices in the correct size and then just let them be crabs doing crab stuff.
My hydrometer today is saying humity is at 100 and temp is only 75. It is stuck to the wall up top corner but it seem so off to me. No condensation on the walls or anything. I've been trying to warm the tank up waiting on bigger mat.
If you are using one of the analog guages that stick to the wall of the tank, they are notorious for being wrong. I would get a digital Guage and set it about 2-3 inches off the substrate in the middle if the tank. We just turn a small dish upside down and set the Guage on top of the dish.
Question! I had a humidifier and it wasn't getting the humidity high enough (too small for the tank size) so I got some bubblers with regulators and even having just one on directly below my vent and away from the heat mat with the regulators turned down it's constantly just too high and I don't have the resources to keep buying moss to change out 😩 any suggestions? I have 3 3 year olds so it's difficult to keep up with constantly and feel bad that I can't figure it out because I want to make sure they're happy and healthy. Also, I thought about reducing the size of the pools but my largest crab can barely submerge in the one I have now so I don't think that's a possibility. Any ideas 💡 are appreciated!
If your humidity is too high I would turn down the bubblers ( as splash-back can wet the substrate around the pools causing high humidity.) Additionally you can vent your tank with a slight crack to keep humidity down.
Do you have any videos on how to remove mold from the crabitat once it appears?. I never had issue with this until 1. I put live moss in the moss pits 2. I cleaned the tank and with vinegar water. The only places it’s appearing is on the wooden stairs to the moss pits and the huge seagrass hammoc above the 2 bubble pools. I’m at a loss here I have already removed this mold 3 days ago, and it’s coming back. Appreciate your help in advance
Hello Kkane. the seagrass hammocks are known for growing mold. They work best if you put them far away from the water pools and keep them off the substrate. The wooded ladders to the coco hides shouldn't mold much though. Are they made of pine? If so, pine is unsafe. If your substrate is all eco earth, if it is too moist, if you are misting, or using a humidifier - all of these things can cause mold to grow quickly. I hope this helps!
We live in the desert where there is very low humidity. We have moss, bubblers, and a fogger. Does the humidity need to be high in all areas or can there be lower sections like the warmer and cooler areas.
How big is your tank? It really depends on that. For example, a 100 gallon tank or bigger could have "zones" , but much smaller than that should probably be pretty consistent. Foggers have lead to many problems, keep a very close eye on that.
What kind of top does this terrarium have? My crabs are in a glass terrarium with a wire mesh top which I have been covering partly for humidity purposes.
Hi crab central station! I have a question. I’m setting up my crabitat and I found out that my thermometer/hydrometer has a magnet on the back of it what should I do about it?
Things to check when you notice mold: Is your substrate too wet? It should be bone dry. if you're sub is the 5:1 playsand to eco earth ratio, and its dry, be sure to clean your woods and food dishes!
Wait, since when are you NOT supposed to mist their enclosure daily? Because I don't see how a moss pit and/or bubblers (I have both btw) will raise the humidity to the 75-80 's...?
Hi Stella, you're right, this video isn't about how to create humidity in your crabitat. We have a different video dedicated to how to get the correct heat/humidity in the tank, check it out. This video is dedicated to quick tips/tricks to trouble shoot if someone is consistently struggling with too high or too low humidity.
With winter here; I am having a hard time with my tank not staying humid enough, I added two more bubblers and I still can’t get the humidity to stay high enough. A fogger is what I have been using for the past few weeks; I know it’s not good, but am not sure what else to do; even the top layer of the sand is drying out. Now I don’t fog daily; only maybe 1-2 times a week.
I have seen this used successfully in some set ups. The thing you want to look for is if the wire starts to rust. The salt water pool + high humidity can cause rust. If that happens, remove the wire cage.
hello!! my humidity gauge is broken and i’m getting a new one soon, but i am wondering does the condensation in the tank mean the humidity is too high?
also my crabs have not moved much since i got them around 2 days ago, could this be because they are stressed and still getting used to their new home?
Yes, condensation is a sign of too much humidity. You definitely want to wipe the glass off when you see condensation. Most likely, your crabs are super stressed and needing to rest and get healthy. Check out our video on PPS to help them acclimate slowly.
Hello. What about if I live in the Philippines? Do I also need a heat mat for them? They have optimal temperature but I don't know how to create humidity without the heat mat.
PS...I think I have a molter so, I have been misting the tank more because I haven't wanted to wet the substrate and stir. How long will he stay under?
I have a 20g long with a 20g tall topper. If I completely seal it my tank the humidity jumps to 90% 🥺 is this an issue? How can I bring it down? I keep them in my classroom & while I’m here I keep it slightly open since I can keep an eye on them but at night I have to cover it up.
It can be a problem long term with flooding, bacterial blooms, algae, and mold. What is the heat? How big are the pools? Do you have bubblers running in the pools? Did you set up the tank with wet or dry substrate? Do you mist the tank? Sorry for all the questions, this will help.me be able to best help you. Yay for classroom hermit crabs!!!
@@CrabCentralStation I had .5g pools but I took those out & put small plastic containers for left overs in instead. I started with dry sand & dry eco earth. I put in moss dry & some leaf litter. I also did have bubblers, I tried turning them down but they splashed a lot so I just took those out. The heat I’m also having a little trouble with (I’m not if I put the heat pad on right - I put the side with the copper lining facing the tank) it’s staying in the low 70s(73-75) humidity is up in the 80s- low 90s.
@@CrabCentralStation it’s really hot here so we turn on the AC at the school on all have the school at a very low cold 69/70°. I think it’s affecting the tank heat because when I had them at home going through PPS I didn’t have a heat pad on them cause it would stay at 80-83° all day. We don’t turn on the ac at home
I have a question! I have a 10 gallon crabitat with 6 inches of sand castle consistency substrate, and two small crabs. The humidity levels are steady 80, with a temperature of 80 degrees. However, I frequently get condensation on the tank side and front tank walls and it prevents me from seeing my crabbies :(( any tips for controlling condensation?
I know on your video you stated that foggers are bad for the tank. I’m not sure whether foggers and humidifiers are considered the same but if I have a humidity gauge attached to the humidifier would it be ok to use?
Great question! If your tank is set up properly, you shouldn't need to use either. A well sealed tank, the correct size heat mat, correct tyoe and amount of substrate, and water pools.... it should hold humidity without adding anything else. If you would like to DM us or email us, we can help you troubleshoot your humidity. We 💘 to help!
Just set up our crabatat like 5 days ago and I just got my gauge 2days ago and the humidity is staying around 92-95 I noticed the bagged play sand was pretty moist I’m guessing it’s the sand causing it have you had a problem like this before and will it eventually like dry up naturally?
It may dry up but that’s why we recommend to start our dry. The tank will hold moisture really well. You can crack the lid to vent the tank to release some of the humidity
@@CrabCentralStation Ohh I missed the start out dry part, but I just got home and i can’t believe it my gauge is saying 86-88, I just watched your awesome video when you talked about calibrating the humidity gauge with the cap of salt and I can’t begin to understand how that works lol but I am gonna do that to make sure it’s accurate.
Hi, living in Florida it’s hard to keep unwanted insect pests out of my hermit crabitat. Do you have any solutions that would be safe for the hermit crabs?
Oh man, I bet that gets frustrating. So I have a couple ideas... 1. Is your substrate 5:1 ratio of play sand to eco earth? If you have more eco earth or other amendments, that could be part of the problem. Eco earth, soil amendments attract bugs. 2. Is your tank completely sealed? No holes or openings? Hermit crabs need a high humidity to breathe, so a sealed tank is very helpful. 3. Try feeding only dried foods (dehydrated) when you have a spike in bugs. 4. If you have an infestation, you will need to do a complete tank redo. New substrate, bake all wood and coco hides, freeze all foraging items, boil shells, clean all decor. Bugs will lay eggs in all of that stuff. 5. If it's Nats. Spread some coconut oil on a paper plate and wave it around in the tank to catch flying Nats. I hope these ideas help? Please let me know if I can help in any way.
@@CrabCentralStation my humidity levels haven’t gotten much better, still at like 90% i am using a digital gage. I can’t tell if that truly is the right amount or if my gage is not acclimated correctly? I been cracking my cage when im home and letting it air out, but when i get home the levels spike! I live in the chicago area so I assume weather isn’t drastically affecting my cage or maybe it is?
We usually have a local glass maker cut lids for our tanks. If you look up a business that does "windows and doors" they might be able to help. Stands can be tricky. You want one that is meant for aquariums, because the weight of the sand in the tank is too much for some furniture.
I don't even have my crabs yet but I set up the tank and when I put the lid on its 99% and when I take the lid of its 60% (I don't even have water in there yet or the heat on)
Your job it’s so important! Thanks for sharing everything! I feel that I know what I am doing! Because they’re happy walking around and climbing, eating,😊🎉❤I am watching every single video,😅, Uuf ! So they can have a great tank and long lasting life! I am a teacher too!
Is Fluker's Live Hermit Crab Moss safe for hermit crabs? I don't trust a product just because it says it's for hermit crabs. But, it would be nice to have a few patches of live moss for my hermies. Do you have a favorite brand of sphagnum moss?
I just use sphagnum moss from my hardware store in the gardening section. For LIVE moss, we buy from "Because of Crabs" on Etsy. I would not use Fluker's moss.
I have high humidity, well that is what my analog reader says, but when I open my tank and stick in my hand it dose not feel like I have high humidity at all
Analog gauges aren’t really accurate! I recommend you get a digital one if you can. We currently use these gauges: AcuRite 00325 Indoor Thermometer & Hygrometer with Humidity Gauge, Black, 0.3 www.amazon.com/dp/B004K8RF10/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_WVS1Fb7EJCPKK
I have a 40 gallon tank .The heat mat I got us for a 30 to 40 gallon tank is that enough . It doesn't cover the entire back of my tank is that sufficient or do I need 2 of them?
Are you looking for a lid for your 20 gallon tank? The size will be different depending on if you have a 20 gallon long tank or a 20 gallon tall. Here is an option that would fit a 20 gallon tall. www.amazon.com/Aqueon-Aquarium-AAG29024-Versa-24-Inch/dp/B0002AS7ZS/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=20+gallon+aquarium+lid&qid=1606597601&sr=8-2
Do not mist the tank, that leads to mold/bacteria/and floods. If you have the tank set up properly (substrate type and depth, closed tank, water pools, heater) it should keep the sand just right.
If switching to smaller water pools helps increase humidity, does increasing pool size reduce humidity? Kinda of counter-intuitive because it would be more water, but also take longer for the water to heat up enough to evaporate?
So many things factor into finding the right balance. Size of tanks, size of pools, if you use bubblers, if you use filters, how well is the tank sealed, size of heatmat, amount of objects in the tank, depth of substrate.... ect. Our video on heat and humidity could be helpful.
@@CrabCentralStation yes, sorry for whining, but it is frustrating. But then the tanks went on sale & the heaters came back in stock & I now have happy, spoiled crabbies.
A year later…my crabs have been asking for help and I could see the humidity was a little on the high side (85%), so I was venting to no avail…the substrate is soaked! I removed the water tanks & wells filled up…so I am removing the saturated substrate and adding fresh. Maybe my bubblers were set too high and we finally reached a breaking point?
My humidity is very hard to keep up and I think because I don’t have a glass roof because the tank isn’t made for them, also my moss is just dead I soak them in freshwater but nothing
The proper tank and lid are crucial for survival. A plastic storage bin would work better than a metal cage until you can get the 20g from Petco that you want.
I have a question. It doesnt have to do with heat and humidity but how do crabs get dirt mites? Because i recently had them but then i had to get rid of all of my dirt and stuff that was inside of the tank which was alot, but i dont want to get them again so i need to know how i can prevent my crabs from getting them

So I have 3 saltwater baby hermit crabs but I looked at this dish that they are staying in and i thought i saw a parsite floating in the water. Have any idea if that was a parsite or not or whatever it was?
I do not know the heat or humidty. My moniters felll in the water, and are not working. I am buying a new one. Temprature is about 80 degrees ferinhight. My crab is a large. I got him on January 6, and he has not molted in the time I got him. Also, I offered him food last night, and he did not want to eat.

Personally I don't care for the look of it either. We choose to use glass lids for our tanks. They keep the heat and humidity the best and look nice too.
Didn't know this stuff in 1983 when I kept them. Would like to keep them again, but we'd be taking them out of nature, where they belong. I hate to admit it, but I think it's better for them if we leave them alone.

It's so great that you know your crabs well enough to be able to tell when something seems off with them! Clearly you love them!
I'm just getting started with my first crabitat and your channel has been such an incredible comfort and help! Thank you! :)
Awesome! Let us know if you have questions. We are happy to help.
I will have to keep this video in mind if I run into any problems! You are sooo knowledgeable and I love learning new things! Thank you for putting in the time, effort and knowledge in all these videos!!!
Thank YOU for supporting our videos! So glad these are helpful!
maybe a dumb question but if the lid is sealed wouldn't they run out of air eventually? how does that work?
Good question! Hermit crabs have modified gills. They breathe the moisture (humidity) in the air, not the air itself. The oxygen exchange that takes place during feeding and water changes is enough air for them.
@@CrabCentralStation what if the tank is sealed with bubblers going on? Is that affecting the air pressure?
New owner to 2 hermit crabs. Love your videos! Do you guys have a magazine out specifically for hermit crab care, facts, tips, etc?
Good for trying look on the crab street journal website
Yes, we see this too. I just rescued a crab living with no salt water, pellets, no heat, no extra shells, for 10 years!! So crazy to me!
Oh noooo what is a bacterial bloom? Thank you been binging on your channel for a month now love you all!!
Thanks for joining us at Crab Central Station! A bacterial bloom happenes when substrate becomes too saturated and trapped. Bacteria grows in that type of environment.
@@CrabCentralStation thank you!
Thank you
I got two hermit crabs from Myrtle Beach and as soon as i put it in the crabitat, one buried itself in the middle, its veen there for two days, im scared it has died but with 6 inches of substrate i dont want to disturb it, how long should i wait. Im correcting the humidity as its been at 87% but 75 degrees. Any pointers
You gotta leave him alone, he’s just molting. He wasn’t able to before since at beach stores they don’t have any substrate to bury themselves in. He’s fine!!
My crabs seem to love the diffuser! They are out and about when I have it on.
They use natural play sand

I can definitely see how adding a humidifier to the room could help. That is a safe way to use one! Thanks!
which humidifier do you use?
Where did you get the tank and lid? I’m getting hermit crabs soon and just watching your videos to see tips on them😁 also where do you get the shells and what do you use for their substrate/bedding?
You can get tank lids from petsmart, Petco, petworld, or you can get them custom cut at a glass shop.

Hi Darcy! I think there might be a problem with that thermometer. I set it to 85° Fahrenheit like you said to do and it only went up to 80° and then it went back down to 77. Do you know why it's not going up to 85° like I programmed it for?
Could be....
1. Your tank needs to be insulated
2. The room the tank is in is so much cooler than the tank that the heat mat can only warm the tank to 80°F (which is a good and safe temperature).
3. You may need more decor on the tank. The heatmat heats the air and items in the tank. The more items to warm... the more heat (wood decor is good for this)
4. You may need more substrate. Because you are warming the air... if you decrease the amount of space/air the heater has to heat... the warmer it will get.
Try those things! I hope these ideas help 😁
@@CrabCentralStation Thank you I'll try.😊🦋🌸
Mold 😔😞😩🥺😣 what do I do about mold on my canopy that I have for him? Can I just boil it in vinegar or something ? Then let it dry ? And put it back after I clean and replace substrate? It’s like something for him to climb on it adds a second floor to his tank. Thank you .
Hello rickytocoolforu. The best thing we have found to help with this issue is:
1. clean the canopy well in water
2. soak it in a bowl of hermit crab salt water
3. let it completely dry
4. place it in the tank OFF the substrate and away from the pools. The extra moisture from the pools and substrate is what causes the mold to grow.
Hope this helps!
My crabs always going digging to hidde never stay on top like that some times they do the worry’s me and my boyfriend at times.
Same, but I'm in Texas. She said not to mist the substrate but if I dont it dries out to where it won't hold form for my hermit on the top layer
Can you do a video on tank tops and stands? I cannot find a tank top or stand for my 55 gallon.
Thats a great idea!
What do you suggest for crabs of diff species? I have a purple pincher and an Ecuadorian... I didn’t know it was a thing when the pet store sold them
To me ... oops. Figured hermit crab was a hermit crab... silly me
We always recommend having at least one partner of the same species for your hermit crabs. If you’re able to, we highly recommend adopting one more of each of the species you have so they have a species partner and aren’t lonely 😊
But in regards to the humidity/heat ratio?
Their friends are in the car on the way home w me as we speak 😝
Thanks 😊
Crabs change shells as they like, and some seem to like to change more often than others. Best thing we can do is to make sure we offer many choices in the correct size and then just let them be crabs doing crab stuff.
@@CrabCentralStation Ok great thanks

Awesome! Thanks so much
My hydrometer today is saying humity is at 100 and temp is only 75.

Wow! Way to go! Have fun setting up their tank. Please reach out with any questions, we are here to help!
I am struggling with high humidity 99 in my 40 gallon tank and with two filtered Waters in 1 gallon pools one fresh one salt. It stays foggy
Hi crab central station! I have a question. I’m setting up my crabitat and I found out that my thermometer/hydrometer has a magnet on the back of it what should I do about it?
That shouldn't be a problem You can still have it in the tank. Is that what you were asking? forgive me if I misunderstood.
How do you prevent mold in a crabitat? My humidity stays around 75 but today I noticed mold in the tank.
Things to check when you notice mold:
Is your substrate too wet?
What kind of lid do you have? What size tank? What size heat mat? How much substrate? All of these things can make a difference in your humidity.
Using a small floor heater will help with humidity .
Great tips! Do you know if I can use a small wire bad cage in my tank as something for them to climb on? I know that some metals are toxic to them.
I have seen this used successfully in some set ups. The thing you want to look for is if the wire starts to rust. The salt water pool + high humidity can cause rust. If that happens, remove the wire cage.
Thanks!
I can’t find a sealed tank so :/
I was spraying it down daily so I’ll stop and wrap it in cyran wrap
You just need a glass lid for the size tank you have. Aqueon makes great glass lids.

hello!! my humidity gauge is broken and i’m getting a new one soon, but i am wondering does the condensation in the tank mean the humidity is too high?
also my crabs have not moved much since i got them around 2 days ago, could this be because they are stressed and still getting used to their new home?
Yes, condensation is a sign of too much humidity. You definitely want to wipe the glass off when you see condensation.
Most likely, your crabs are super stressed and needing to rest and get healthy. Check out our video on PPS to help them acclimate slowly.

PS...I think I have a molter so, I have been misting the tank more because I haven't wanted to wet the substrate and stir. How long will he stay under?
They can molt anywhere from 2 weeks to a year. Usually the smaller they are the less time it takes them to molt.

Just set up our crabatat like 5 days ago and I just got my gauge 2days ago and the humidity is staying around 92-95 I noticed the bagged play sand was pretty moist I’m guessing it’s the sand causing it have you had a problem like this before and will it eventually like dry up naturally?
It may dry up but that’s why we recommend to start our dry. The tank will hold moisture really well. You can crack the lid to vent the tank to release some of the humidity
@@CrabCentralStation Ohh I missed the start out dry part, but I just got home and i can’t believe it my gauge is saying 86-88, I just watched your awesome video when you talked about calibrating the humidity gauge with the cap of salt and I can’t begin to understand how that works lol but I am gonna do that to make sure it’s accurate.

what size heating mat should I buy for a ten gallon tank with regular fish tank lid?
On beanfarm.com there are tons of different mag options! I believe the size for a 10 gallon is the 20”x12” option!
I got way to high of humidity ill see if this helps!

Have any suggestions for 55 gallon tank stands and lids?
We usually have a local glass maker cut lids for our tanks. If you look up a business that does "windows and doors" they might be able to help. Stands can be tricky. You want one that is meant for aquariums, because the weight of the sand in the tank is too much for some furniture.

www.amazon.com/Aqueon-Aquarium-AAG29024-Versa-24-Inch/dp/B0002AS7ZS/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=20+gallon+aquarium+lid&qid=1606597601&sr=8-2
Do maintaining a humidity of 75 to 85% keeps your sand as 'sand castle consistency'? Or do I need to mist my tank at a regular basis?
@@CrabCentralStation lol bigger tank, bigger pools, and bigger heater finally worked!
Great! I'm so glad it's finally working for you! Happy crabs and happy mom!

Water will need to be changed everyb48 hours. Don't forget to prime every time you change the water.
@@CrabCentralStation ok
I have a question. It doesnt have to do with heat and humidity but how do crabs get dirt mites? Because i recently had them but then i had to get rid of all of my dirt and stuff that was inside of the tank which was alot, but i dont want to get them again so i need to know how i can prevent my crabs from getting them
Hi! Here are some articles that may be able to help you with mites. I’m not sure why they would get into the crabitat or how, but these may be able to help you learn more about them.

Whats going on with the babies crabs? I have 5 land hermits 5 years old. Im trying to rear ocean blue legged hermits, wondering how far you got.
Which ones? The ones we tried to raise from eggs or the captive bred ones we got at CrabCon from Mary Akers?
So I have 3 saltwater baby hermit crabs but I looked at this dish that they are staying in and i thought i saw a parsite floating in the water. Have any idea if that was a parsite or not or whatever it was?
I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with marine hermit crabs.
@@CrabCentralStation It is totally fine I just didn't know, I love your videos when is the next time you will post?

Where can I buy shells?
We love theshellshop.com
I do not know the heat or humidty. My moniters felll in the water, and are not working. I am buying a new one. Temprature is about 80 degrees ferinhight. My crab is a large. I got him on January 6, and he has not molted in the time I got him. Also, I offered him food last night, and he did not want to eat.
He could be getting ready to molt. But, if you are unsure of humidity, that could be the problem too.
@@CrabCentralStation I am unsure of the humidity. I put in more substrate, and more wet moss. He is movie a bit more. He went to his water dish. Thank You for your help. This channel is great in helping me take care of my crabs.
That's great news! Is your tank completely sealed? Is your lid a screen?
My crab is sluggest. I do not know why. Can you help me?
I can try. What is the heat? Humidity? When was the last time he molted?
I feel like the tinfoil or ceran rap on my lid would make it look ugly tho
Personally I don't care for the look of it either. We choose to use glass lids for our tanks. They keep the heat and humidity the best and look nice too.
@@CrabCentralStation ok thanks
What kind of moss to get
There’s a lot of moss you can buy! We like sphagnum moss and anything from BecauseofCrabs on Etsy!
What if you make 2 small tanks in your crabs. One salt one freshwater.
I was thinking about 10 gallons each. Would they our it and like the fish with them
We use 10 gallon pools currently and used to use 2.5 gallon aquariums for pools.
Cool
Second love your vids
The pet stores don’t know jack about what these guys need! 😢
Beautiful eyes
First comment ✌️
After adding my heat mat, my humidity dropped
I just added it yesterday
It may take a couple days to stabilize. If you can, place your pools near the heat mat, that will help. Is your tank completely sealed as well?
@@CrabCentralStation I need to get the silicon to make it completely sealed
Didn't know this stuff in 1983 when I kept them. Would like to keep them again, but we'd be taking them out of nature, where they belong. I hate to admit it, but I think it's better for them if we leave them alone.
u can order them of etsy from other ppl because they can’t go back into captivity
