    Friday and Saturdays were my favorite days in the week when I was a kid. No school, TGIF, and Cartoons.

    *sigh* I miss the Saturday morning preview specials just as much as the Saturday morning cartoons themselves. I loved getting to find out what sorts of new awesomeness I'd get to wake up for.

    I love when they're laying on the couch in opposite directions and then they get the idea to eat cereal like you would on a Saturday morning. :) Love it.

    During the final three years of NBC's orignal Saturday morning block, all of its programming outside of Saved by the Bell suffered constant Executive Meddling. First, NBC canceled The Smurfs, at one time considered NBC's staple animated program, and gave it the time travel treatment for a year while struggling to headline newer shows, like Captain N: The Game Master and the Animated Adaptation of The Karate Kid, the latter of which was promptly axed due to low ratings. Both shows had to rely on word-of-mouth as NBC chose to spend their resources headlining Saved by the Bell. Then, a year later, Kissyfur was axed and its time slot replaced by NBA Inside Stuff, a recap program of NBA basketball games. At the same time, NBC exhausted more advertising revenue toward Saved by the Bell, causing drastic budget cuts for cartoons airing on the block. Potential viewers would either move to other blocks, such as newcomer Fox Kids, or watch Nickelodeon instead. Then, in the block's final year, Captain N was shortened from an hour to a half-hour, and both Alvin and the Chipmunks and the obscure Gravedale High were canceled in favor of new shows like ProStars and Yo Yogi!, the latter of which was critically panned and proved to be the final straw. As a result of the persistent ratings failures and continued pressure within the children's television market, NBC ordered all Saturday morning programs canceled, save for only Saved by the Bell since it was the most successful show of the block. They continued airing reruns of the shows until August 1st, 1992, when a teen-oriented live-action block named TNBC and a Saturday morning edition of Today took its place. Saved by the Bell and NBA Inside Stuff were the only programs to survive the transition. NBC's decision to drop their Saturday Morning Cartoon block is widely viewed as the beginning of the end for the format.

    You're right. The mandate slowly took hold. You could tell with CBS's shows after 1997 that things were heading in a bad direction. Look at how mangled the WEIRD AL SHOW was when CBS hit them with tons upon of tons of *rules* that made absolutely no sense, especially given how much adult content Pee-Wee's Playhouse got away with a decade earlier.

    • @jnadle1
      @jnadle1 3 года назад +1

      They may have to drop the mandates if people flee broadcast networks on Saturday mornings. Besides, there's plenty of content through streaming.

    That was sort of out of character for Larry to back down and pout after balki slapped his wrist. Larry was usually retaliated whenever balki tried to stand up to him. But maybe this was done because it was a special for kids

    You know, I'm 37-years-old. I remember the days when Saturday morning cartoons still existed. Then the government had to come in and take those away because they wanted something, "educational," to air on Saturdays.
    I'm sorry. But it's a sad day when parents rely on TV shows to educate their children. Shouldn't *they* do that?

    @FutureNewsAnchor I don't think that went into effect immediately. Fox Kids still aired its weekday and saturday morning cartoons even though they were declining and ABC had One saturday morning which ran until the early '00s. I think NBC was effected and CBS was effected but it definitely wasn't until much later. Not saying you're wrong but I think it took time for all the networks to drop it at once. NOWadays it's like you said where it's all educational
